Hissaa Kaur : Amritsar Girl Bags Free Trip To National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
16-year-old Amritsar Girl Hissaa Kaur, a class 10th student of DAV Public School received a rare opportunity to visit NASA after she topped the International Space Olympiad (ISO) 2020. She scored 78.75 marks in International Space Olympiad (ISO) in the preliminary, intermediate and final test collectively.
What is surprising is the fact that not only is she the first student from India to secure this position in the senior category, but also the one to achieve it with her own hard work, without any coaching.
It was a ‘dream comes true’ for her when she got the official confirmation. She wants to be an astrophysicist. She competed with students from Singapore and Switzerland, besides different parts of India, and bagged the first place.
“I got myself registered in September 2019, but due to Covid-19 restrictions, the first-round examination was pushed to January, followed by the second phase being conducted in June and the final in August. I am eagerly waiting for the situation to get favourable so that I could visit my dream destination, the NASA centre,” said Hissaa.
Hissaa Kaur credited
her father Savrajinder Pal Singh, an engineer with the MC, Amritsar, and her
mother Kamalpreet Kaur, an English teacher in a government school, for her
success.
“Having an
engineering background, my father taught me the nuances of science and my
mother made sure that I get the best of knowledge in astronomy,” she added.

Joe Biden Campaign Launches ‘Sikh Americans for Biden’, Want Sikhs in US to Feel Safe
The Biden campaign has launched an initiative to reach out to the Sikh community in the US and vowed to address the unique challenges, including xenophobia, being faced by the minority religious group in the country. It has plans for protecting Sikh-American youths in schools.
Sikh-Americans experience bullying at rates twice the national average and have reported a spike in these encounters since 2017, the campaign said in a press release on Sunday.
Kiran Kaur Gill, a prominent civil rights activist and member of the Sikh American National Leadership Council siad with Biden as the US president, Sikh-Americans can feel safer in schools and on the streets.
The Biden
campaign has said that if voted to power, the Biden administration would
allocate additional federal funding for anti-bullying initiatives.
Valarie Kaur
According to
civil rights activist Valarie Kaur, "This election is unlike any other.
Everything our Sikh ancestors fought for a world of dignity, equality, and
justice is at stake."
"A Biden
presidency would give us a chance to save our democracy, heal the earth, and
begin to birth a world where we are no stranger'. That's why I am proud to join
Sikhs for Biden and do everything in power to get out the vote. Our lives
depend on it," she said in a statement issued by the South Asians for
Biden on Sunday.
Japjee Singh, an
anti-bullying advocate, detailed the horrific bullying that took place at his
high school in Georgia. In 2013, when he was 17-year-old, Singh was repeatedly
targeted with verbal and physical harassment because of his Sikh faith. He was
called a "terrorist" and fellow students used to target him for
wearing turban. Singh's bullying case led to the first US Department of Justice
school bullying settlement on behalf of a Sikh student.
"A lot of
the systems in place prevent victims of bullying from being heard and
validated. Often these victims are perceived as the aggressors; they are not.
Biden is committed to change these systems, so we can provide survivors of
bullying with the support that they need," Singh said.

Kalbir Bains : “Not Our Daughter - True Story of a Daughter-in-Law”
As a volunteer for The Sharan Project Kalbir Bains educates the younger generation on honour-based abuse and encourages them not to suffer in silence. She is also changing public policy by educating CPS, police force, and health workers. Her work is chipping away at the cycles of abuse."
Beautifully illustrated by Jag Lall from an old photo of her parents' wedding in the '70s, Kalbir Bains used this as the main image for her book "NOT my daughter! The true story of a daughter-in-law".
If you are the parent of a daughter, or a daughter yourself, you’re not going to be able to put down this book.
Not only has she overcome her own struggles with domestic violence and become an advocate for others, but she has also overcome her struggles with dyslexia to write this book.
“I was born and bred in Birmingham, UK. Over the years, I have learned to express my thoughts through writing, poetry, art, and design. Writing was one of the biggest challenges I have ever taken on board as I am dyslexic. At the age of 22, I had a reading span of a 7-year-old. I decided enough was enough and I wanted to prove to myself that I could write a book even though people around me kept telling me I couldn’t achieve this.” https://www.facebook.com/sikhnet
