Kalbir Bains : “Not Our Daughter - True Story of a Daughter-in-Law”

                                            Kalbir Bains
"NOT our daughter! The true story of a daughter-in-law" is a book by Kalbir Bains; it’s also been turned into a short film. Through telling her story Kalbir gives others the courage to break through a veil of shame, thus dis-empowering abusers.

"With tremendous courage, Kalbir Bains breaks through taboos. She has transcended from victim to advocate for those suffering from domestic abuse, including honour-based violence, girl abortion, and dowry abuse.

As a volunteer for The Sharan Project Kalbir Bains educates the younger generation on honour-based abuse and encourages them not to suffer in silence. She is also changing public policy by educating CPS, police force, and health workers. Her work is chipping away at the cycles of abuse."

Beautifully illustrated by Jag Lall from an old photo of her parents' wedding in the '70s, Kalbir Bains used this as the main image for her book "NOT my daughter! The true story of a daughter-in-law".

If you are the parent of a daughter, or a daughter yourself,  you’re not going to be able to put down this book.

Not only has she overcome her own struggles with domestic violence and become an advocate for others, but she has also overcome her struggles with dyslexia to write this book.

“I was born and bred in Birmingham, UK. Over the years, I have learned to express my thoughts through writing, poetry, art, and design. Writing was one of the biggest challenges I have ever taken on board as I am dyslexic. At the age of 22, I had a reading span of a 7-year-old. I decided enough was enough and I wanted to prove to myself that I could write a book even though people around me kept telling me I couldn’t achieve this.”
