Sikh refugee’s plea to Delhi government for free treatment to save his son

The Delhi High Court Friday issued notice to the central and Delhi governments and AIIMS on a plea filed by Afghan refugee parents of a four-year-old boy suffering from aplastic anaemia, a life-threatening disorder.

Justice Manmohan sought response from the governments and hospital July 24. The kid, Kulraj is in dire and immediate need of bone-marrow transplant to save his life, which would cost around Rs.10 lakh, as per the estimate given by AIIMS, advocate Ashok Agarwal appearing for the parents told the court. The plea said that as per the last examination, his platelets have come down to 2,000 and are dwindling, against a minimum normal of 150,000. 

Since the kid’s parents are not in a position to afford the cost of the treatment, AIIMS, the central and Delhi governments, jointly as well as severally, have a constitutional obligation under article 21 to bear the entire cost of the treatment of the patient in order to save his life, argued Agarwal.

The kid’s health has been deteriorating and the doctors have warned that he is not responding well to the current treatment. The boy has lesions appearing all over his body, particularly in the mouth and he has stopped eating for the last two days, the plea stated.

Kulraj’s father, Sujan Singh is a Sikh refugee from Afghanistan. His family had come to India in 1992 and settled here. He works as a salesman and earns around Rs.8,000 a month. Unable to afford the hefty cost of treatment of his son, he approached the court, submitted the plea.

Most of the Chinese ladies cried reading the Guru. After decades of communism and atheism the need to experience spirituality is so strong that emotions overflow.

Now, at Ajai Alai Center, we are doing prakash of the Guru every morning and sukhasan every evening.

Also, the prashad recipe is now part of the new born 3HO Chinese community.

Satmukh Singh, who started all this process in China six years ago must be honored for the mission.

Saibhang Kaur : “Reading the Guru was indescribable, and sometimes feeling taken over”

Ramdev Kaur : “It felt like a new beginning, an opening and I am honor to be here for the first of what may be many to come”.

Devinder Kaur : “A Divine and Miraculous experience. I feel really close to God.”

Ajeet Dev Kaur : “Moving. When you make some mistakes, you feel guilty but someone didn’t judge you and saw the good part of you and treated you gently, just like the Guru’s love.”

Sukh Meher Kaur : “Amazing experience. When I was reading the book, I entered a space where I was worry free, care free. I could leave everything behind. I felt protected. I got much deeper understanding about the Sikh religion. In that space, I feel very comfortable, I just wanted to stay by the Guru. Also, one time, reading the Guru, I was crying.”

How it was achieved :

Here in China we are having the Chinese Yoga Festival. The Yoga Festival was organized by Satmukh Singh, from France, in the Ajai Alai Yoga Center in Shenzhen and Satmukh Singh wanted to have an Akhandh Path.

So Karta Singh from France gave to the new Gurdwara a Guru in one volume (made by binding the 4 volume translation together.)

Atma Singh (myself) gave the Victory and Virtues (Sikh Dharma ceremonies) book. Sat Siri Singh, from London, was our Minister for the whole process.

We just finished the Akandh Path this morning at 4:30. 29 different people read it for 110.5 hours. We started on May 1st, at 14h.

The experience was very inspiring and also fun: at the beginning, all the Chinese, with great devotion, did multiple bows, like the Muslims are doing, in front of the pictures of the Gurus on the wall. We educated them to bow in front of the Guru Granth Sahib only.

SAD to discuss anti-Sikh riots issue with Union Home Ministry

"SAD will soon discuss the ongoing legal proceedings with the Union Home Minister to ensure proper investigations and early hearings of the cases to put the perpetrators of heinous crime (1984 anti-Sikh riots) behind bars," said Badal.

He asserted that the time has come to punish the architects of "Sikh genocide".

Accusing previous UPA led Centre of shielding "culprits" of anti-Sikh riots, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister said the new NDA led government at the Centre has build up the trust of Sikhs who have been fighting for the last 30 years to get justice.

Badal said SAD was confident that Centre led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi would deliver justice as early as possible by adopting every legal and administrative measure.

Answering a query regarding recently concluded Lok Sabha poll results, SAD President said they accept and respect the mandate of people in Punjab.

He said SAD-BJP will soon start introspection exercise to gauge the performance of government vis-à-vis parties.

He said the main focus of the ruling combine will would all round development of state and welfare of all sections of society.

Badal also reviewed Rs 78.08 crore Golden Temple Plaza project and issued directions to the authorities concerned to conclude the construction before given deadline.

US Sikhs Hire Hillary Strategist to Change Perception

WASHINGTON : American Sikhs have hired a political consultant, who served as a strategist for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, for the first-ever exploration of creating positive perception about Sikhs among Americans.

Geoffrey Garin, who also served as the pollster and strategic advisor to Priorities USA, the super PAC supporting President Barack Obama’s re-election in 2012, will take an in-depth survey of feelings and misperceptions towards Sikhs for the newly formed National Sikh Campaign (NSC).

This research will lay the foundation for the largest promotion of Sikhs in the western world coordinated by NSC with messaging that will deliver new information and visuals that can positively change attitudes toward Sikhs.

Gurwin Singh Ahuja, executive director of NSC who was part of Obama’s two election campaigns in Ohio, said, Sikhs have been part of American scene since they first immigrated to North America 100 years ago.

“There is no one better than Garin to properly conduct a study that can show how Sikhs can dispel the misperceptions about our community and portray us as part and parcel of American society,” he said.

New book explores Sikh weddings

If you visit a Sikh temple you may be lucky enough to attend a wedding while you’re there.

Families who host Sikh weddings must be ready to feed more people than they actually invite because Sikh temples are open to the public and it is not uncommon for strangers to join the celebration.  

This is just one of many customs that non-Sikhs may be unaware of.

Arvinder Grewal’s book, Weddings Around The World: Sikh Weddings, is a guidebook inspired by her own experiences with weddings growing up in Vancouver. She wrote the book for the Sikh-Canadian community when she realized that some customs were being lost.

“I intended it for the generation who have lost this information, who don’t have this information passed down to them,” said Grewal. But she added that the book is for anyone who is interested in Punjab culture or the Sikh religion. “I hope that it gives people an idea of the beauty of a Sikh wedding, the richness, the culture,” she said.  

She noted a distinction must be made between Sikhism and Punjab. Sikhism is a religion, whereas Punjab is a region in northern India that extends into eastern Pakistan.

According to a 2011 Statistics Canada report, 11 per cent of Vancouverites self-identify as South Asian, 10 per cent speak Punjabi at home and 6.5 per cent follow the Sikh religion.

Akali Dal to implement Nanavati report on 1984 riots: Harsimrat

New Delhi, May 27 (IANS) Punjab's ruling Shiromani Akali Dal will get the Nanavati Commission report on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots implemented to bring those behind the riots before law, newly appointed Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal said on Tuesday.

Harsimrat, who assumed charge as minister, said that justice has eluded victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots for the last nearly 30 years.

"The NDA government under prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had constituted Nanavati Commission to investigate the riots but unfortunately its report was not implemented by the Congress government. The Akali Dal would get this report implemented in letter and spirit to bring all those perpetrators of this heinous crime behind the bars," she told media persons after taking charge.

Hundreds of Sikhs were targeted and killed in Delhi and other places across India by mobs in the aftermath of the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh security guards in October 1984.

Pakistan Sikhs threaten protests against holy book desecration

A Sikh organisation in Pakistan has threatened to launch countrywide protests if those who allegedly desecrated the Sikh holy book are not arrested by Saturday.

Speaking at a press conference at Karachi Press Club yesterday, Pakistan Sikh Council (PSC) patron Ramesh Singh demanded that a judicial commission be constituted to investigate how and why such incidents had all of a sudden started happening across Sindh province, reported the Dawn.

He said that all the culprits should be arrested, tried and awarded stern punishment so that it could act as deterrence to others. He also demanded security for the religious places of minorities.

Recounting instances in which copies of the Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib were burnt, Singh alleged that various incidents had been reported from across the province including in Sukkur, Dadu and Shikarpur districts.

Earlier this month, similar incidents were reported in Karachi and Shikarpur.

New York: A Sikh temple in the US is facing local opposition

New York: A Sikh temple in the US is facing local opposition because of plans replace its existing prayer hall with a 12,000-sq-ft building with gold domes in a rural neighbouhood, media reported Monday.

The construction of a new building has been opposed by the people in Sacramento County in California. Gurdwara authorities are questioning the residents whether race has played a role in the opposition, since building a church does not face any such opposition, the Sacramento Bee reported.

The Community Planning Advisory Council is scheduled to hear the Sri Guru Ravidass Gurdwara’s proposal Wednesday.

County officials have denied claims of racism raised by any project opponents.

“When someone keeps complaining without reason, then you might guess that racism is the reason,” a county resident, Ramesh Banger, said.

Charlea Moore, a member of the Community Planning Advisory Council, said neighbours have legitimate concerns about the project, but she said she thinks they can be resolved.

Residents raised complaints about how the temple would use properties adjacent to the prayer hall and a few complained about the drainage in the property due to the constant floods in the area. They also asked how parking would be handled, Moore said.

The project’s supporters have addressed the concerns with plans for a detention pond and shuttle bus service when large events are scheduled.

American Sikh Congressional Caucus strengthened with two more co-chairs

Washington, May 23 (ANI): The bipartisan American Sikh Congressional Caucus has announced the appointment of Congressman John Garamendi and Patrick Meehan as additional co-chairs of the caucus.

They will serve as leaders of the caucus with the current co-chairs Congresswoman Judy Chu and Congressman David Valadao.

The selection of Garamendi and Meehan was made official through a letter to the House Committee on Administration.

Garamendi has worked with the California Sikh community for decades. His Congressional District is home to tens of thousands of Sikhs and many Sikh run farms.

"It is an honor to be selected as co-chair of the bipartisan American Sikh Caucus. I am proud to take this next step in my work with Sikh-Americans to defend civil rights, fight discrimination, and educate Members of Congress and the public about the community," said Garamendi.

Protesting Sikhs push into Pakistan parliament

ISLAMABAD — Dozens of baton-wielding Sikhs pushed past the front gate and entered the grounds of Pakistan's parliament Friday, protesting recent attacks on their houses of worship.

Sikhs staged a two-hour sit-in on parliament's lawns in Islamabad before dispersing after speaking with police officials and lawmakers from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N party, senior police officer Aftab Cheema said. They assured the Sikhs they'd receive full protection, Cheema said.

Cheema said investigators would look into how protesters made it past the gate.

Zafar Ali Shah, a lawmaker from the PML-N party of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, told reporters that the Sikh leaders protested against several attacks on their places of worship in southern Sindh province.

"We assured them that the government will provide them full protection, and they peacefully dispersed," he said.

Darshan Singh, a lawmaker from the minority Sikh community, said the protesters apologized over entering the parliament's grounds.

Sikhs are a tiny minority in predominantly Muslim Pakistan. Most of them live in Sindh province and they never held such a protest in the past.

Sikh-Americans raise $3,30,000 for needy students in Punjab

WASHINGTON: A US-based Sikh body has raised $3,30,000 to fund scholarships for bright but poor students to acquire higher education in Punjab. 

Sikh Human Development Foundation (SHDF) organized a fund raising programme which was attended by Sikh-Americans from across the US. The chief guest of the event, Surender Singh Kandhari, a Dubai-based business tycoon, announced a donation of $1,00,000. 

"Education is the most important treasure that any young man can possess and we are privileged to be in a position to help those in need in Punjab. It is our duty to do so. Good education helps in breaking the cycle of poverty. Giving is a virtue and it is a blessing that we are being asked to give," he said.

Two killed in police firing in Hyderabad

Two people were killed and nine injured Wednesday when police opened fire to disperse two clashing groups in Hyderabad, police said.

Curfew was imposed to bring the situation under control in Sikh Chowni in Kishan Bagh under the limits of Rajendernagar police station, a part of Cyberabad police commissionerate.

Trouble broke out after miscreants attacked houses and shops of a particular community following rumours that a religious flag was burnt.

Police opened fire to disperse the clashing groups killing two people and injuring nine, a police spokesman of Cyberabad told IANS.

Cyberabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand said the situation was brought under control. He appealed to people to maintain calm and cooperate with the police in restoring peace.

As tension spread to the adjoining areas of the old city of Hyderabad, police imposed prohibitory orders. Additional police and paramilitary forces were rushed to the troubled area.

Shopkeepers in the markets around the historic Charminar downed shutters while police stepped up patrolling.

Personnel of Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed in the communally sensitive old city. Several RAF vehicles were seen moving into the interior areas as a precautionary measure.

One person was killed and several were injured in the violence in the same area over a similar incident few years ago.

Anandpur Sahib torpidly sprawls in the foothills of the Shivalik range. The green of the indigenous kikar provides a painterly contrast to the white structures and the almost-always clear blue skies. In between this mosaic, the Sutlej River meanders through, en route her long journey to reunite with the great Indus.

It was here, over 300 years ago, when Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth guru of the Sikhs, founded the Khalsa brotherhood. Ever since, the town has been an important pilgrimage site for the community, with Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib-one of the five temporal seats of the Sikhs-and over 40 gurudwaras drawing the faithful. On festivals, especially Holla Mohalla (March) and Vaisakhi (April), when the turnout is colossal, its labyrinthine lanes become a riot of colour and exuberance fills the air. It's a quiet, bucolic town offering unchartered trails for hiking, over 150 bird calls to identify, a non-touristy farm life to experience, voluntary service at langar, indulgence in simple pleasures of picnicking by the crystal-clear waters of the canals.

Sikhs to begin goodwill walk from S'pore to Malacca on Saturday

KUALA LUMPUR: UNITED SIKHS MALAYSIA, a non-governmental organisation from the local Sikh community, plans to undertake a 300km goodwill walk from Singapore to Malacca beginning Saturday until May 24.

Rishi Singh Randhawa, a radio deejay better known as "The Flying Singh", will lead the walk starting at 5 am from the Silat Road Gudwara Sahib in Singapore. 

 

The goodwill walk also aims to raise awareness and funds for the Gurpuri Foundation. 

 

Gurpuri, which means "Place of the Guru", intends to build a Sikh temple, a school and a home for orphans, widows, single mothers, handicapped children and the elderly on a seven-hectare site in Bentong, Pahang. 

 

"We hope to raise a minimum of RM100 per km and we will walk for an estimated 10 hours a day for eight days," Rishi said. 

 

There will be stops along the way, including gurdwaras (Sikh temples) in Johor Baru, Batu Pahat and Muar.

Sikh stamp unveiled

Canada Post has unveiled a new stamp to mark 100 years since a ship full of mostly Sikh passengers was turned way from Canada and sent back to India, where they were jailed or killed.

The Komagata Maru arrived in Vancouver's Burrard Inlet on May 23, 1914, carrying 376 British subjects, primarily Sikhs from India's Punjab region, as well as a number of Hindus and Muslims.

The ship was denied permission to dock and only a handful of passengers were allowed to stay in Canada, with the rest remaining on the ship as it was escorted out of Canadian waters two months after its arrival.

When the ship arrived in India, 19 of the passengers were shot and the rest were imprisoned.

The international-rate stamp features an image of the Komagata Maru, with a group of men in Sikh turbans in the background.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper delivered an apology for the Komagata Maru incident in 2008, and the B.C. legislature passed a motion apologizing on behalf of the province the same year.

British girl gets jail for attacking elderly Sikh man

London, May 10 (IANS) The British teenaged girl who attacked an 80-year-old Sikh pensioner in a city centre in Britain's Coventry last year has been jailed for two years by the Warwick crown court.

Coral Millerchip, 20, attacked frail pensioner Joginder Singh at the city centre in August last year, an act which was captured on camera and caused an outrage among the Sikh community in the country, the Coventry Telegraph reported on Friday.

Millerchip punched Joginder Singh to the ground with his Sikh turban falling off in the brutal assault.

The judge Friday ruled that the girl had "humiliated" Singh and sentenced her to a two-year jail term and 20 more months for an unconnected burglary.

Singh suffered a scratched nose in the attack and was later discharged after being taken to the hospital.

A resident of Coventry in Britain's West Midlands, he was a dementia patient and died three months after the attack from an unrelated health complaint.

Millerchip pleaded guilty to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, the report said.

Describing it to be "a serious type of offence", the judge said: "This man was very vulnerable due to his age and due to a medical condition."

"He was an elderly gentleman - you could have just walked away from him. Instead of that you assaulted him and humiliated him," the judge said.

Turban tadka: Bollywood's top five on-screen 'Singhs'

New Delhi, May 4: Once again, Bollywood's 'Khiladi' actor Akshay Kumar is going in for a turbaned look in "Singh Is Bling". In recent years, 'Punjabization' has taken over Bollywood and it seems that playing a "Singh" has become trendy with quite a few actors donning the turban.

Here are the five top actors, who wore the turban with aplomb on big screen:

Akshay Kumar: He first played a Sikh in "Singh Is Kinng" (2008) and the audience loved his character so much so that the film turned into a blockbuster. It still rules the heart of the Singhs in the country. It even touched Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Coming out of parliament after winning a crucial trust vote in 2008, he flashed the V for victory sign and many a TV channel had "Singh is Kinng" playing in the background. The film was appreciated so much that the 46-year-old Akshay was nominated for the best actor award at the 3rd Asian Film Awards for his performance. He will now be seen playing a Sikh again in the film's second instalment, "Singh Is Bling", which is slated to release in July 2015.

Sunny Deol: In recent times, Sunny Deol is the one who has perhaps turned Sikh on the celluloid the maximum number of times - "Border" (1997) "Gadar: Ek Prem Katha" (2001), "The Legend of Bhagat Singh" (2002), "Jo Bole So Nihaal" (2005), and "Yamla Pagla Deewana" (2011). The 57-year-old was appreciated for his work in all of his endeavours.

Saif Ali Khan: Known for his metrosexual image, Tiger Pataudi's son Saif Ali Khan too wrapped the turban to essay Veer Singh in "Love Aaj Kal"(2009), directed by Imtiaz Ali. The 43-year-old, who played a double role in the romantic comedy, impressed girls across the country with his style statement in the film.

Ranbir Kapoor: Current heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor was seen with turban in "Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year" (2009). Rachel Saltz of New York Times called it "a smart, focussed Bollywood movie" and commended the 31-year-old for "turning in a skillfully understated performance".

Ajay Devgn: Ajay Devgan furnished an exquisite performance of his career as freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in "The Legend of Bhagat Singh". For the 2002 release, directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi, he received the National Film Award for best actor. Later, the 45-year-old did a humorous role in "Son of Sardaar" (2012) as Jaswinder Singh.
