Gurinder Singh Mann's Book :The British & The Sikhs – Discovery, Warfare & Friendship C1700-1900
Gurinder Singh Mann
Gurinder Singh Mann is a Punjabi historian and the author of multiple books on Sikh culture. Currently he has been working diligently on Sikh
Museum Initiative as its Director and researched on numerous Sikhs relics and artifacts
in UK.
Recently
Helion & Company have released Mann’s third book, The British and the Sikh Discovery, Warfare and
Friendship c1700-1900. Unlike other books on British & Sikhs which
either deal with the Sikhs participations in World Wars or Sikh contribution in
Indian freedom struggle against British, this book focuses on the period prior
to these developments. Both became regional powers in Indian sub-continent
after the collapse of the Mughal Empire and eventually clashed when the Sikhs
kingdom remained the only independent entity neighbouring to India held by
British East India Company.
The beauty of the book
is that it will appeal both a casual reader and serious student of history. The
chapters are well referenced but are not overly onerous in vocabulary and style
to discourage non-academic readers. The appendices on various treaties signed
and important letters during this period are a useful addition.
Book is highly recommended and is available in UK & rest of the Europe on Helicon Website.

A New Jersey Police Chief Stepped Down After He Was Accused of Calling a Sikh Attorney General 'that f---ing guy with the turban'
Mr. Gurbir Grewal :US's First Sikh State Attorney General
A New Jersey police chief has stepped down just days after being
accused of making racist and sexist statements against top prosecutors.
An audio recording emerged on July 4 that featured a man's voice
disparaging the state attorney general, Gurbir Grewal, and the former acting
Union County prosecutor, Grace Park.
The man could be heard saying Park was "pretty hot"
and "she got wide ones," and calling Grewal "that f---ing guy
with the turban — I wanna pull him like a top."

Nearly two-thirds (67%) of the total cases reported in the district during
the same period were that of community spread, wherein the patients had no
travel history or were those with untraceable sources of infection.
The Amritsar district witnessed an increase of 174% in community
transmission cases of Covid-19 in the last one month.
Also, nearly two-thirds
(67%) of the total cases reported in the district during the same period were
that of community spread, wherein the patients had no travel history or were
those with untraceable sources of infection.
One of the
worst-affected districts with the coronavirus in Punjab, Amritsar had reported
630 cases till June 15. But in the next 30 days (till July 15), the district
added 517 cases, taking the total tally to 1,147.
Of the 517 fresh cases in a month, 348 are of community
transmission while the remaining are their close contacts. The district also
reported 37 deaths due to Covid-19 during the same period.
After relaxations
in the nationwide lockdown were announced on May 19, it took 17 days (till June
5) for the district to record 100 cases of community transmission and another
10 days (till June 15) to reach 200-mark in the same category of infection.
Of the total 840
Covid-19 cases reported in Amritsar since May 19, as many as 548 (around 65%)
are of community spread, say health officials.
“These community
transmission patients were tested in flu corners after they showed symptoms of
the disease. Their source of infection could not be traced but the health
department and district administration are working hard to contain the further
spread of the infection. People are moving in the markets without taking
precautionary measures besides disobeying social-distancing norms,” said
Amritsar assistant civil surgeon Dr Amarjit Singh.
He added,
“We are testing over 800 people in the district daily. People are reluctant to
get themselves tested and they are still hiding their symptoms from the health
department.”
