Joe Biden Campaign Launches ‘Sikh Americans for Biden’, Want Sikhs in US to Feel Safe

The Biden campaign has launched an initiative to reach out to the Sikh community in the US and vowed to address the unique challenges, including xenophobia, being faced by the minority religious group in the country. It has plans for protecting Sikh-American youths in schools.

Sikh-Americans experience bullying at rates twice the national average and have reported a spike in these encounters since 2017, the campaign said in a press release on Sunday.

Kiran Kaur Gill, a prominent civil rights activist and member of the Sikh American National Leadership Council   siad with Biden as the US president, Sikh-Americans can feel safer in schools and on the streets.

The Biden campaign has said that if voted to power, the Biden administration would allocate additional federal funding for anti-bullying initiatives.

                                             Valarie Kaur

According to civil rights activist Valarie Kaur, "This election is unlike any other. Everything our Sikh ancestors fought for a world of dignity, equality, and justice is at stake."

"A Biden presidency would give us a chance to save our democracy, heal the earth, and begin to birth a world where we are no stranger'. That's why I am proud to join Sikhs for Biden and do everything in power to get out the vote. Our lives depend on it," she said in a statement issued by the South Asians for Biden on Sunday.

Japjee Singh, an anti-bullying advocate, detailed the horrific bullying that took place at his high school in Georgia. In 2013, when he was 17-year-old, Singh was repeatedly targeted with verbal and physical harassment because of his Sikh faith. He was called a "terrorist" and fellow students used to target him for wearing turban. Singh's bullying case led to the first US Department of Justice school bullying settlement on behalf of a Sikh student.

"A lot of the systems in place prevent victims of bullying from being heard and validated. Often these victims are perceived as the aggressors; they are not. Biden is committed to change these systems, so we can provide survivors of bullying with the support that they need," Singh said.

Kalbir Bains : “Not Our Daughter - True Story of a Daughter-in-Law”

                                            Kalbir Bains
"NOT our daughter! The true story of a daughter-in-law" is a book by Kalbir Bains; it’s also been turned into a short film. Through telling her story Kalbir gives others the courage to break through a veil of shame, thus dis-empowering abusers.

"With tremendous courage, Kalbir Bains breaks through taboos. She has transcended from victim to advocate for those suffering from domestic abuse, including honour-based violence, girl abortion, and dowry abuse.

As a volunteer for The Sharan Project Kalbir Bains educates the younger generation on honour-based abuse and encourages them not to suffer in silence. She is also changing public policy by educating CPS, police force, and health workers. Her work is chipping away at the cycles of abuse."

Beautifully illustrated by Jag Lall from an old photo of her parents' wedding in the '70s, Kalbir Bains used this as the main image for her book "NOT my daughter! The true story of a daughter-in-law".

If you are the parent of a daughter, or a daughter yourself,  you’re not going to be able to put down this book.

Not only has she overcome her own struggles with domestic violence and become an advocate for others, but she has also overcome her struggles with dyslexia to write this book.

“I was born and bred in Birmingham, UK. Over the years, I have learned to express my thoughts through writing, poetry, art, and design. Writing was one of the biggest challenges I have ever taken on board as I am dyslexic. At the age of 22, I had a reading span of a 7-year-old. I decided enough was enough and I wanted to prove to myself that I could write a book even though people around me kept telling me I couldn’t achieve this.”

BMC To Start Demolitions At Punjabi Colony colony at Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar

Crumbling Structure  at Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar

As the civic body gets ready to raze dilapidated buildings, residents plead for state intervention to help redevelop the area.

Residence of Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar

Punjabi colony at Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar (GTB), which is more than 70 years old and has been home to Sikh and Punjabi refugees who came from Pakistan shortly after Independence, might be on its last legs. Post the Govandi building collapse incident, the BMC has started rigorous action to vacate all dilapidated buildings in the city. The plan for demolition is ongoing and execution will start in October. But, residents are pleading for government intervention, as they haven't found any solution for the redevelopment or alternate accommodation.

All the 25 buildings of Punjabi Colony are in a dilapidated condition and the BMC had started sending evacuation notices to these buildings almost two decades ago in 1999.

But after all these years of court cases, agitation and redevelopment process, the BMC has started disconnecting water and electricity. It has already cut connections of 14 buildings. "We plan to cut the connection of all the remaining buildings over the next week, as they are dilapidated, and we cannot take any risk. The demolition process of buildings will start in October," said Gajanan Bellale, assistant commissioner of F North ward consisting Wadala and Sion.

While the residents also do not feel safe staying in these buildings, and many of them have already shifted, the main issue of redevelopment and alternate accommodation remains unresolved.

Sudeep Singh's Article :
