Khalid Saleem, a carpenter who survives on daily wages, was surprised to see a young Sikh man standing at the main gate of his house in the Mohallah Jogan Shah neighbourhood in Peshawar.
After sharing pleasantries, Khalid learned that the man had come to provide food since Khalid had lost his income because of the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent lockdown, which kept him from working.
"I can never forget this generous and timely support by the minority community and am very thankful to my Sikh brothers for this act of kindness," he said.
Interfaith Harmony :

"We have provided all kinds of help to those affected by the coronavirus and supplied food at [residents'] doorsteps," said Jatindar Singh, a Sikh resident of Peshawar and chairman of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) chapter of the National Council of Peace and Harmony.
"The Sikh community has worked in collaboration with a number of charity organisations and donated financial assistance to help and support our countrymen who are facing problems due to restrictions on commercial activities from the coronavirus outbreak," Singh said.
Apart from providing relief, the Sikh community has participated in campaigns to raise awareness among the general public on safety measures against the coronavirus, he added.
"The Sikh community and representatives of other minority groups including Christian and Hindus have taken part in campaigns launched to help and raise awareness... during the pandemic," said Ubaid Ullah, president of the Pak-Youth Parliament.
Pakistanis appreciate the goodwill gestures by the minority community, he added.
"In Nankana Sahib, a district in Punjab Province ... named after the first guru of Sikhs, Sikh community members distributed food and sanitiser," said Surjeet Singh Kanwal, general secretary of the Pakistan Sikh Council.
The Sikh community has installed a walk-through sanitiser gate on the main road in the district, through which thousands of pedestrians and even motorcyclists pass daily.

Guru Nanak was the founder of a major world faith, not an ethnic group:Sikhs drop legal threat against Scottish government after promise of ethnicity tick-box on census

Sikhs in Scotland have dropped a planned legal case against the Scottish government after being assured they will be recognised as a distinct ethnic group.

The Sikh Federation had threatened legal action unless ministers included a separate Sikh box in the ethnicity section of the next census, despite the fact Sikhism is a religion.
The Sikh Federation had an “excellent” meeting with Fiona Hyslop

But community leaders have since solved the issue after a meeting with Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop and equalities minister Christina McKelvie.
Dabinderjit Singh, who represented the Sikh Federation, said: “We had an excellent meeting with Fiona Hyslop and Christina McKelvie who both showed a real passion and leadership to address inequalities and racism faced by the Sikh community in Scotland. In the last six months Scottish ministers have shown a clear desire to properly recognise the Sikh community in the census.

“We now have an agreement to work together and build a road map for public bodies in Scotland to get them to collect ethnicity as well as religious data on Sikhs to help with decision making. The positive and constructive approach taken by Scottish ministers listening and working with the Sikh community means we have no need to pursue a legal route in Scotland.”
Gurpreet Singh Johalof the Scottish Gurdwara Council, added: “We are delighted to be working with the Scottish government and appreciate the leadership ministers are showing to make the lives of Scottish people better. The ministers appreciate having good quality data will make a real difference to the Sikh community in Scotland.”

“For a start we’d like to educate them on Sikh teachings.
“First lesson – Guru Nanak was the founder of a major world faith, not an ethnic group.”

CORONAVIRUS: No Gatherings Over 30 at Weddings; Mandatory Mask Requirement To Be Imposed in Punjab

To stop the growing cases of COVID-19 in Punjab, the State Government today issued a new directive. As per a statement issued by the Punjab Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, new rules have been implemented by the Punjab Government to curb the spread of coronavirus in the state.
Stepping up its fight against coronavirus, the government of Punjab published its revised guidelines, completely banning public meetings and limiting social gatherings to five attendees and weddings and other functions to 30, which was earlier 50. The government has also urged the police to register FIR against those who violate the curbing of public meetings.
The revised guidelines derived the day after Chief Minister of Punjab Captain Amarinder Singh declared the imposition of more stringent curbs in the wake of the increasing coronavirus cases in the state.
“To prevent this epidemic from spreading further, we must become responsible citizens and follow all the instructions and rules,” Captain Amarinder Singh.
Punjab government issued a comprehensive notification that states that joint police force and civil administration teams should strictly enforce restrictions on social gatherings according to section 144 which has been imposed in all districts of Punjab, as well as marriages and social functions.

US-Based Dasvandh Network has Partnered with a Number of Sikh Organizations Across The Country to Raise funds For and Support the #BlackLivesMatter Movement.

In a press note, the Dasvandh Network announced that it is launching a new initiative to support the Black Lives Matter movement by raising funds for the Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective (BEAM) collective.
Dasvandh Network started that amidst a global pandemic and its resulting economic fallout, the murders of George Floyd and Breona Taylor resulted in country-wide protests and much-needed conversations about racism and long-term systemic change.

George Floyd was killed in May 2020 and since then, the country has seen a growing number of protests by the Black Lives Movement supporters. The Dasvandh Network press release states that the Sikhs have an inspiring history of standing up for and in solidarity with those who have faced injustices.

It is imperative that we, as Sikh Americans, continue to support the call for human and civil rights both universally and domestically.

The initiative by Sikh organizations will aim to raise $25,000 for BEAM. Sikh24 calls upon its readers to donate via the Dasvandh Network initiative and help the long-term healing of the Black Community. Donations can be made online at www.dvnetwork.org/BEAM
