District judge to hear '84 anti-Sikh riots case against Sajjan

A district judge today allowed a plea of a sessions judge to transfer a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case allegedly involving senior Congress leader Sajjan Kumar.

District Judge Bimla Makin decided to hear the matter herself on June 2 after receiving a request along with details related to specific reasons from Additional Sessions Judge V K Goyal in a sealed envelop.

The court passed the order to transfer the case after being satisfied with the reasons given by ASJ Goyal.

It directed the envelop containing the reasons to be sealed again saying the document shall not be opened again except by the order of the High Court.

Additional Sessions Judge V K Goyal was to pronounce the order on an application of the prosecution seeking direction with regard to a chargesheet prepared by police against Kumar but never submitted before a judicial officer.

On May 24, the judge, who was to deliver the order on whether directions could be issued to the police to file the chargesheet before a competent court, decided to send the file to the district judge for transferring it to another court.

"Due to some personal reasons, I do not want to try and adjudicate this matter. Let the file be placed before learned District Judge VIII with a request to transfer the same to some other court of competent jurisdiction," ASJ Goyal had said.

But the District Judge had on May 24 asked ASJ Goyal to spell out the reasons for expressing his inability to adjudicate the case and forward his reply in a sealed cover on May 31.

Delhi gets its latest architectural marvel

Delhi will soon have a new tourist spot, just in time for the Commonwealth Games.

Guru Tegh Bahadur Memorial, an architectural marvel that promises to give an insight into the life and teachings of the Ninth Guru of Sikhs, is ready and likely to be inaugurated soon.

Constructed along National Highway 1 (GT Karnal Road) near Singh Border by Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC), the memorial would be known for his architecture, design and world-class illumination.

“It has a unique concept. The central pylon represents Guru Tegh Bahadur while the three semi-arches represent his three disciples. Ten monoliths around it represents ten Sikh Gurus and disseminate their teachings,” chief engineer Jose Kurian said.

Indian visa uproar prompts Canada to launch immigration-policy review

The Harper government vowed to review its immigration rules after Canadian visa officers in India touched off a furor by barring dozens of people on the grounds that their service in army, police and intelligence units made them complicit in human-rights violations.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney issued an apology on Friday, saying Canadian immigration officials should never have cast aspersions on India’s institutions. The incidents, he said, showed visa officers have too much latitude.

For a deeply embarrassed Harper government, the pledge and apology were an effort to repair relations with a country it has been assiduously courting: India’s booming economy makes it a major target for attempts to build trade ties to the East.

And at home, the visa flap won’t help Conservative efforts to woo a diaspora of more than one million Indo-Canadians; some were offended by the insult, others by the apology.

Canada and India now chalk up the incidents to overworked immigration officers in the New Delhi embassy, where about half of the 360 staff members work on immigration matters. Canada and India, Mr. Kenney said in a statement, work closely together on security.

“The Government of Canada therefore deeply regrets the recent incident in which letters drafted by public service officials during routine visa refusals to Indian nationals cast false aspersions on the legitimacy of work carried out by Indian defence and security institutions, which operate under the framework of democratic processes and the rule of law,” he said.

The apology didn’t end there: It came with a pledge that Canada will review its policy on declaring foreigners inadmissible. The incident, he added, “has demonstrated that the deliberately broad legislation may create instances when the net is cast too widely by officials, creating irritants with our trusted and valued international allies.”

'SGPC polls not possible during this year'

IANS

The elections to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the mini-parliament of Sikh religion, are not possible this year or even by early 2011, an official Friday said.

Chief Commissioner of Gurdwara elections, Justice (retd.) H.S.Brar said that final preparation and publication of electoral rolls will be completed by November this year and after that, it would take a few more months for the actual elections.

'We are starting the registration of voters June 1 and it would continue till July 15. After this, there are many things like preparation of rolls, filing of claims and objections, disposal of objections, and after covering all these stages, the final publication of electoral rolls will be on Nov 9 this year,' he told reporters here.

'After Nov 9, it would normally take two to three months for the actual conduct of SGPC elections. Moreover, it all depends on the discretion of central government and they have to decide the final date of election. There is always a possibility that we might have to wait for a longer period for elections,' Justice Brar added.

The SGPC, headquartered at the holiest Sikh shrine Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, manages all the big gurdwaras and has an annual budget of Rs.4.5 billion. It is dominated by Punjab's ruling Akali Dal, which has accused the central government of delaying the elections.

Charges framed against Sajjan Kumar

A Delhi court on Friday framed murder charges against senior Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

The Kadkaddooma court framed charges against Sajjan Kumar and five others for allegedly killing five people in Delhi Cantonment during the riots that followed the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.

Earlier, the Delhi High Court Tuesday reserved its order on Congress leader Sajjan Kumar's petition contesting the framing of charges against him in the killing of five people in the city during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a chargesheet against Sajjan Kumar and others in two cases for allegedly instigating mobs during the riots, in which more than 3,000 Sikhs were estimated to have been killed across Delhi.

They risk their lives for just Rs 200

Banur, Punjab: For just Rs 200 as risk allowance per month, the zookeepers at Mahendra Choudhary Zoological Park, famous as Chattbir zoo, have been risking their lives everyday while feeding animals and cleaning their cages. “Handling wild animals is not an easy job. While minor injuries are part of the day, many of us have even suffered major accidents as well”, said a zookeeper.

There are around 150 zookeepers assigned with tasks of looking after animals or birds on regular basis in different shifts.

The Government gives these keepers Rs 200 per month as risk allowance, which does not even cover medical expenses of minor injuries.

Besides physical danger, employees also suffer from different infections that the wild animals pass on to them. Incidences of germ infestation and bacterial infections are common amongst zookeepers.

Sharing their experiences, zookeepers said one of them lost three front teeth when an elephant swayed his tail too swiftly and hit the zookeeper’s teeth. In yet another incidence, a zookeeper lost his life while cleaning the tiger’s enclosure.

“Handling a pregnant animal or that which has laid eggs is very difficult. It is necessary that these animals’ enclosures be cleaned daily. Presently, crocodile is busy hatching her eggs and does not budge to allow us to clean her enclosure. Such irritated animals tend to attack and inflict injuries,” added another zookeeper.

Field Director, Tushar Kanti Bahera said medical reimbursement was also been given to the injured zookeepers but it depended upon the nature of injuries inflicted.

There are carnivorous animals in the zoo, including 11 tigers, 9 leopards, herbivorous animals like niel gai, sambhar and hundreds of birds and other wild animals.

“Our basic salary starts from Rs 5,200 and with stipends it reaches up to Rs 10,000 a month” said the zookeepers.

Zoo officials said though keepers are perfect in their work but at times they fail to judge mood of animal and receive injuries.

The Central Zoo Authority, Government of India, has been conducting trainings for keepers. However, there is always a risk of life while working with these animals.

Three of the zookeepers were sent for animal-handling training in Lucknow last year and four others would undergo training to handle poisonous snakes this year.

Judge rules Sikhs must understand charges made against them

A Sharjah court in the United Arab Emirates has adjourned the trial for seventeen men from the Sikh community who have been sentenced to death, as the appeal to save their lives commenced today. On the 16th June another hearing will be made; Judge Yunis Al-Reda will now hear the appeal once all court proceedings and reports of the case against the accused have been formally translated into Punjabi.

In police custody, the men have been subjected to torture methods and other human rights violations. According to the LFHRI (Lawyers for Human Rights International) ‘The Sikh religion has been mocked and slandered. The lawyers who spoke to the tortured men heard how the officials in Sharjah jail made the prisoners stamp on religious bracelets and necklaces until they broke into pieces, then torment the men about ‘what their God is doing for them.’

The Indian embassy has assured that they will supply a translation of the documents within a week. Up until now, none of the young boys held in custody have been given information about the case against them in the language they understand. The Emirati lawyer who originally represented the seventeen, did not mention to the court anything about the torture they boys were subjected to. In the original court case where the death penalty was given to all men, the trial proceedings were translated from Arabic into Hindi, which the men did not understand.

Sikhs around the world have been pushing for a fair trial, to implement basic human rights. Over 10,000 Sikhs gathered opposite Downing Street on the 16th May to support these Sikhs and to urge the British Government to ensure that these boys have a fair trial, and all evidence against the accused is made available.

The young men aged between 21 and 25 are migrant workers from India. They moved to Dubai in search of work to send money back to their loved ones in Punjab. Dubai, a luxury paradise has been built by the hands of men such as these. The families of the seventeen men contest their innocence and have appealed to the Indian Government to step in and repatriate the men back to India.

Judge Yunis Al-Reda has ruled the appeal proceedings in Court will continue on the 16th June, once the seventeen young men have been given access to hear the evidence and understand the case against them in a language they understand, Punjabi. This gives the Sikh community and human rights activists time to put pressure on the judicial, to ensure these young boys are freed and sent back to their loving families in India.

Amnesty International says UAE abused Indian prisoners

Rights group Amnesty International has condemned authorities in the United Arab Emirates over the alleged torture and forced confession of 17 Indians.

They were sentenced to death last month for killing a Pakistani man.

Amnesty says the men were taken to the scene of the killing in the emirate of Sharjah and forced to re-enact it.

It says they were made to beat a police officer posing as the dead man a month after their arrest - an act filmed and presented as genuine evidence.

There has so far been no comment so far on the allegations from the UAE authorities.

'Faked video'

Citing evidence produced by Indian rights group Lawyers For Human Rights International (LFHRI), Amnesty said that the 17 men were beaten with clubs, given electric shocks, deprived of sleep and forced to stand on one leg for prolonged periods.

"This is a mockery of justice. These 17 men have been tortured, forced to confess and sentenced to death based on a faked video," Amnesty's deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa, Hassiba Hadj Sharaoui said.

"Amnesty International is calling on the UAE authorities to investigate the allegations of torture and abuse and to ensure the 17 men receive a fair trial on appeal," the group said in a statement.

Kaal - A short story

A man dies and goes to heaven....he says to Lord Almighty.....you never gave any notice that i was going to die so i didnt prepare or pray .

God said so I did....first I weakened your eyesight...you got specks...now operation to get your eyesight corrected.

Then I made your hair go white to remind you...you dyed your hair.

Then I made your legs shaky....you ate multivitamins.

Then I made your teeth fall...you got a denture made forgetting that all these were reminders...

The man was speechless.

A true Sikh who helped everyone, says neighbour

The bodies of H.S. Ahluwalia, co-pilot of the Air India flight which crashed in Mangalore, and crew member Tejal Anil Kamulkar were flown in here on Sunday.

Tearful scenes were witnessed as the bodies, covered with wreaths, were transferred from an aircraft to ambulances. Distraught relatives gathered at the airport consoled one another.

“May his soul rest in peace. He was a true Sikh who helped and served everyone,” Inder Singh Kohli, a neighbour of the Ahluwalias, told journalists.

Ahluwalia's body was taken to a neighbourhood gurdwara for prayers, and then cremated at 9 p.m. He is survived by his mother, two brothers and a sister.

Tejal's body was taken to her house at Dombivili in Thane. Words failed Anil Kamulkar, who received the remains of his daughter. “I don't feel like saying anything. She was very nice. It's all in God's hands. She always wanted to be an air hostess and I made her one. I will always remember everything [about her],” said Mr. Kamulkar, who came to the airport along with his son.

Tejal, 25, joined Air India Charters Limited as airline attendant on training on July 7, 2009. After training, she was “engaged” with the airline “on a fixed-term contract for five years from January 22, 2010 and on the date of her death [May 22], completed exactly four months of service.”

The airline was not certain when the body of another crew member from Mumbai, Sujata Siddharth Survase, would arrive here.

Sikh TV will be the second Sikh channel to be available on the digital platform after Sikh Channel, which has been broadcasting on Sikh issues.

It is not known if Sikh TV has any connection with Sikh Channel' However, sources have indicated that the channel will have some involvement from former workers of the existing Sikh Channel.

Sikh TV will be based in west midlands with a base also opening in Southall. The channel is going to launch an official registered charity. Sikh TV wants to steer away from pledging for donations from viewers-a tactic used by the current Sikh Channel, which keeps the service afloat. Sikh Channel has regularly requested for viewers to set-up direct debits to keep the channel running as it been found the sustainability difficult due to high operational costs.

Judge recuses himself in case of missing Sajjan chargesheet

NEW DELHI: The fate of the missing chargesheet filed in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case and which had named former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar as an accused remains undecided. The sessions court judge who was to deliver the order on whether direction could be issued to the police to file the chargesheet before a competent court recused himself on Friday from hearing the case citing "personal reasons".

Additional sessions Judge V K Goyal was to pronounce the order on an application by the prosecution seeking direction on a chargesheet prepared by police against Sajjan Kumar but never submitted before a judicial officer.

The judge, however, decided to send the file to the district judge for transferring to another court. "Due to certain personal reasons I do not want to adjudicate on this matter. Let the file be placed before learned district judge VIII with a request to transfer the same to some other court of competent jurisdiction," ASJ Goyal said, directing the parties concerned to appear before the district judge on May 24.

3 accused in anti-Sikh riots case acquitted

The Delhi High Court on Friday acquitted three accused in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case at Shastri Nagar in North Delhi, saying there were discrepancies galore in the evidence of prosecution witnesses.

The riots broke out in the wake of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

A Division Bench of Justices A.K. Sikri and Justice Ajit Bharihoke acquitted Bhagat Singh, Mangal Sain and Brij Mohan Verma on their separate appeals against their conviction by the lower court.

The Sarai Rohilla police had lodged a case against the accused on a direction by a committee after consideration of the affidavits filed by the riot victims.

The police had booked them under Sections 395 (dacoity) 435 (mischief by fire or explosive) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

Sikh history book back to haunt SGPC

SAD (Delhi) demands action against panel that cleared the book

A controversial history book, Sikh Itihaas (Hindi edition), published by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) a few years ago is back to haunt the religious body. A delegation of Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) today met Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, seeking a ban on the book and action against the authors and SGPC functionaries responsible for printing and distributing it. The book allegedly uses inappropriate adjectives for various Sikh gurus.

The delegation led by SAD (Delhi)’s Punjab head Jaswinder Singh Baliawal and its youth wing Chief Gurmit Singh submitted a memorandum to the jathedar. “We had taken up the matter earlier as well, and the printing of the book had been stopped. But there is still no action against the panel that cleared the derogatory and blasphemous remarks,” said Baliawal.

SGPC chief’s appeal to Sikhs on census

Anandpur Sahib, Punjab: SGPC president said today that all Sikhs should mention themselves as just Sikhs in the ongoing census.

SGPC appealed that no Sikh should mention his or her sub-caste in the census. It is an appeal to all Sikhs to mention their mother tongue as Punjabi. The census will then shed light on the exact details of numbers of Sikhs in the country.

Condemning the suspension of the Anandpur Sahib – Amritsar rail project, he said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should intervene into the issue. “Being a Sikh, the PM should take up the matter on priority basis. After all, it’s the issue of connectivity between two Takhts,” the SGPC chief added.

Commenting on the allegations of the saffronisation of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur’s tercentenary celebrations, he said the event was meant at bringing people of all walks of life together.

Canadian Sikh shot dead in home

Vancouver, May 18 – A Sikh youth has been shot dead in the driveway of his posh home in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey.

Chhminder Singh Gill, 32, who was killed Sunday, may have been targeted for his possible criminal links, local media said, though police have not said anything about it yet.

A police spokesman said they are investigating his business links.

‘We still have a lot of work ahead of us to figure out who he is linked to and what he is up to. But definitely he was the intended target of this from what we have learned so far,’ he told the local media.

Keertan Darbar pics at Krishna nagar, Delhi

Shabad Chowki Jatha of Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Krishna nagar organised a Keertan Darbar, on the occassion of Tri Centenary celebrations of the victory of Sirhind by Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. He was the Sikh general who established the First sikh state in India by avenging the martyrdom of two sons of Guru Gobind Singh ji.

His baby son was placed on his lap. His son's heart was ripped out. While his heart was still beating in his enemies hand it was forced into his mouth. Banda Singh was tortured, killed and then his head was placed on a spear and paraded around for all Sikhs to witness! Today, Banda Singh Bahadur is celebrated as a great warrior and the first Sikh ruler who established the first Sikh state.

UK hails its blue-eyed Sikh soldier

They number just 80 in the 150,000-strong British Army, but Sikh soldiers have become the toast of the fighting force.

Private Ranvir Singh, a reservist with 151 London Transport Regiment, is now the UK government’s ambassador tasked with building bridges with that country’s formidable Sikh population.

He is credited with dispelling rumours about bullying, harassment and racism in the British army and also encouraging young people to enlist.

Singh has been visiting Gurdwaras across England to reach out to the Sikh community and share his experiences in the Army.

The British army website quotes Singh’s Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Adrain Lee as saying, "The work Private Singh has done on behalf of the British Army has been exemplary. At a time when conflicts occur as much over ideals as over territory, ensuring good communication across community groups is critical."

The British army admits that his efforts have been instrumental in improving its relationship with the Gurdwaras and engaging effectively with Sikhs. The Army Community Liaisons Office for London says, "They (Sikhs) now see a face they recognise and that builds up a trust with the Sikh community and the army."

Three memorials for Punjab martyrs: CM

Fatehgarh sahib The Punjab government has decided to set up three memorials for its martyrs. While one such memorial would come up in Chhappar Chiri in memory of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, two others would come up at Sangrur and Gurdaspur, in the memory of thousands of people who lost their lives in the mass killings.

This was announced by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, while paying tributes to Baba Banda Singh Bahadur on the tercentenary celebrations of the Sirhind Fateh Diwas, on Friday. The celebrations were held on the culmination of the Fateh Diwas march, from Nanded in Maharashtra to Fatehgarh Sahib, covering 2,500 kms in about a month and a half.

Badal said the memorial at Chhappar Chiri would be set up in 20 acres and would have a museum, a fateh minar and a light and sound show to highlight the bravery of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur. Besides, it will also have statues of Banda Singh Bahadur and his generals Fateh Singh and Baaz Singh.

The other two memorials, Badal said, would come up at Kup Rohira near Malerkotla in Sangrur and near Kahnuwan in Gurdaspur district, where thousands of Sikhs sacrificed their lives fighting the Mughals. He said these memorials would go a long way to perpetuate the memory of these great historic events which are an integral part of our rich legacy.

Addressing the gathering, Badal dared the Congress party to shun its nefarious designs to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere in the state. He criticised the Congress for with working through its agents to create communal tension in the state as it had no political agenda of its own.

The chief minister said Punjab had a history of sacrifices and urged the people of the state to draw inspiration from the supreme sacrifices of the martyrs from the state. He also called for ending the menace of drug addiction as the great Sikh general had played a vanguard role in the eradication of intoxicants and abolition of zamindari system during his regime.

Coin released to mark Fateh Diwas tercentenary

The Shatabdi Purab Committee of Mohali on Friday released a commemorative replica of the coin released by Sikh warrior Baba Banda Singh Bahadur in 1710 in the name of the first Sikh master, Guru Nanak Dev.

Releasing the coin during celebrations of the tercentenary of Sirhind Fateh Diwas, committee convener Hardeep Singh, who is a member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), said the coin does not bear the name or stamp of any organisation and has the same language (Farsi/Persian) as used by Banda Bahadur in 1710 on both sides of the coin.

Singh said the residents of Mohali and its vicinity who desire to have the coin, will be sent the coin free of cost at their doorsteps. The first coin was presented to a local resident.

Mandira's tattoo leaves Akal Takht fuming

AMRITSAR: Model-turned-actress and TV anchor Mandira Bedi has once again earned the ire of the Sikh community for sporting an Ek Onkar (God is one) tattoo on her nape, with community leaders threatening to drag her to court for hurting religious sentiments if she did not have the tattoo removed immediately.

On Wednesday, Mandira Bedi, who attended a dealers meet of Jaypee Cement at Zirakpur on the outskirts of Chandigarh along with Sachin Tendulkar, flaunted the tattoo with the symbol in Gurmukhi on her bare nape, leading to protests.

This was the second time she is facing the wrath of the Sikhs, after she was warned by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) in 2007 for walking the ramp with the same tattoo on.

Bedi said on Wednesday that she respected the religious sentiments of the Sikhs and that she had planned to undergo a plastic surgery to have it removed but could not find time.

Now, Gadkari angers Sikhs

FATEHGARH SAHIB: BJP chief Nitin Gadkari's troubles aren't over yet. After having rubbed Lalu Prasad and Mulayam Singh Yadav the wrong way, Gadkari and his colleagues on Friday repeatedly referred to the Sikh general, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, as 'Banda Veer Bairagi.' The reference is something the Sikh community considers as a "deep seated conspiracy of RSS and BJP to discredit the Khalsa 'swaroop'.

The BJP leaders, including Balbir Punj and Punjab cabinet minister Manoranjan Kalia addressed a gathering during the tercentenary celebrations of the Sirhind Fateh Diwas at Fatehgarh Sahib, about 50 km from Chandigarh.

The celebrated Sikh general and his men had defeated the province of Sirhind, in May 1710 in what is considered as a major blow to the Mughals and then went on to establish the first, though short-lived, Khalsa Raj in the area.

Interestingly, just before the BJP chief spoke, Akal Takht Jathedar, Giani Gurbachan Singh, had warned the community against "distortions in the history" showing Banda Singh Bahadur in bad light and present him in the 'bairagi (ascetic) 'swaroop' instead of the Amritdhari Sikh that he had become.

Baba Banda Singh Bahadur memorial in a year: CM

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal announced on Thursday that the state government would dedicate a world-class heritage memorial to commemorate the victory of Sikh warrior Baba Banda Singh Bahadur and his soldiers over the Mughals in Chhapar Chiri village near Mohali, within a year.

Addressing a religious congregation on the eve of the tercentenary celebrations of Baba Banda Bahadur’s Sirhind Fateh Diwas in Chappar Chiri, Badal said the design of the project had already been selected by the panel of top architects of the country, which has now been referred to the high-powered committee, comprising eminent Sikh intellectuals and academicians, for its final approval.

He disclosed that the state government had already given in-principle approval to give 20 acres at a cost of Rs 20 crore for construction of the heritage memorial, which would house Minar-e-Fateh, a museum, an open air auditorium for light and sound shows to depict the life and philosophy of Sikh warriors.

For Tagore, Banda was a hero, 'lion in shackles'

CHANDIGARH: The Sikh community may have taken years to offer its collective homage to the ascetic-turned-warrior, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, but his universal appeal was recognized by poets and intellectuals even before India became independent. Banda was immortalized in literature by one of the greatest poets of the times, Rabindranath Tagore.

It was in 1899 that the Nobel Laureate – whose 150th birth anniversary was celebrated on May 9, ahead of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur's tercentenary of Sirhind Fateh on May 14 —wrote his famous poem 'Bandi Bir' (Captive Hero) based on the Sikh warrior and his brave Sikh fighters who took on the tyrannical Mughal army despite being outnumbered and ill-equipped in terms of weapons. He sang paens to the great warrior, using terms like "singher moto shrinkhalgato" (lion in shackles) to describe his arrest by the Mughals.

The poem, which is part of the academic syllabus in every English and vernacular medium school of West Bengal, is also one of those powerful creations of Tagore which mothers love to teach their children, in every Bengali household. It was also universally recognised as a source of inspiration to several other Bengali writers as well as the militant youths of those times who were fighting for India's Independence.

"This poem can be found in the book of poems by Tagore – 'Katha-O-Kahini' and is an extremely popular, inspirational poem," says Rajat Kanta Ray, vice-chancellor of the Visva Bharati University. Katha-O-Kahini is a collection of Tagore's poems where the poet featured great inspirational figures, not just from Sikh community but also Rajput and Maratha war heroes, who set high standards of bravery and valour.

Sikh Fateh March enters Punjab

Badal, Deputy CM greet the march at Shambhu; celebrations at Chappar Chiri tomorrow

The Sikh Fateh March from Nanded to Sirhind, to commemorate the tercentenary of Sirhind Fateh Diwas, entered Punjab to a rousing welcome from the crowds on Wednesday. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, besides a number of religious leaders, were present to receive the march at Shambhu, on Punjab’s border with Haryana.

The Fateh March, which started last month from Nanded in Maharashtra, has till now travelled 2,500 kilometres, covering various states.

The march will culminate at Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib on Thursday. The state government is celebrating the tercentenary of Sirhind Fateh Diwas in a big way at Chappar Chiri in Fatehgarh Sahib on May 14.

The day is celebrated to mark the victory of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur in ousting the Mughals from Sirhind. Banda Bahadur, a trusted lieutenant of Guru Gobind Singh, had started his mission from Nanded to conquer Sirhind, in order to avenge the martyrdom of two Sahibzadas.

Sikh Marriage Act ready for Cabinet nod

If the assurances given by Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily to a delegation of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee on Wednesday are any indication, the draft of the Sikh Marriage Act is ready for ratification by the Union Cabinet. After clearance by the Cabinet, it will be introduced in Parliament at its next session.

Once passed, the Sikh Marriage Act will meet a long-standing demand of the community that has been fighting for an amendment to the Anand Marriage Act passed by the British in 1909. Under the Act, there will be a special provision for the registration of marriages performed under Sikh religious rights. Interestingly, Pakistan had taken the lead over India by adopting the amended Anand Marriage Act a couple of years ago.

Only yesterday, the Union Law Minister had given indications for amending the Special Marriage Act and not the Hindu Marriage Act. Incidentally, marriages performed under Sikh religious rights are registered either under the Hindu Marriage Act or the Special Marriage Act. Now when the Special Marriage Act is being amended, provision for the registration of marriages performed according to the Anand Marriage Act of 1909 will also be incorporated.

Moily briefed the DSGMC delegation on the proposal. The delegation comprised Paramjit Singh Sarna, his brother Harvinder Singh Sarna besides Bhajan Singh Walia, Kartar Singh Kochhar, Gurmeet Singh Shunty and Rajinder Singh Chadha.

It discussed the statutory recognition to be given to the Sikh way of marriage known as Anand Karaj. The Minister said the Ministry of Law had cleared this long-pending demand and recommended it to the cabinet for enactment. This recognises the Sikh way of life by statutory enactment. Moily referred to his talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and pertinent reference was made to Sonia Gandhi wherein she had taken note of genuine Sikh demands and decided in principle for the passing of the Sikh Marriage Act.

Sikhs set to reclaim lost heritage

LOHGARH: Sadhaura, Kapal Mochan, Bilaspur.... the names jump out of the pages of Sikh history books as the road from Naraiangarh in Haryana turns towards Yamunanagar, just short of the Kala Amb barrier in Himachal Pradesh. On the main road, though, there are not many who know the way to Lohgarh — the first capital of Khalsa Raj, which was established by brave Sikh General Baba Banda Singh Bahadur.

The first helpful hint comes from a traffic cop, who points in the direction of the approaching Fateh Diwas march, from where a small group led by SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar would head for the still-elusive place. It is for the first time in independent India that the representative body is finally set to accord the regard and respect that the place deserves in Sikh history.

Lohgarh has till now remained an obscure place about which few local Sikhs are aware of even though it was the first capital of the community's rule. It's a difficult drive through narrow, hilly tracks, a river bed, and several dried, semi-dried nullahs which takes one to the place chosen by the SGPC to install the 'nishan sahib' (the Khalsa flag) at the site where a gurdwara would be constructed. It will also recreate the Lohgarh fort here as a befitting memorial to the Khalsa fauj and its leader, who defeated the nawab of Sirhind to avenge the killing of the two younger sons of the 10th Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh.

Fire destroys Sikh Temple in central Reno

All that remains of the Sikh Temple at Locust and Second streets are a brick wall, charred wood and pieces of glass, after being gutted Monday night by what officials said was a suspicious fire.

The one-story concrete, flat-roof built in 1996 at the southwest corner of the intersection was engulfed in flames when Reno firefighters arrived about 11:30 p.m., Battalion Chief Dana Tucker said.

Firefighters knocked down the fire quickly, but steam flowed from the building for nearly an hour. Nearby homes were evacuated.

“It is a suspicious fire,” Tucker said, adding police said several burglaries had been reported in the neighborhood at the same time.

Inspectors are considering “all possibilities” said Operations Chief Joe DuRousseau.

Firefighters “did a good job,” said Balwinder Singh, a member of the temple who said the building was unoccupied after the priest left about 9 p.m.

“I don’t know yet about what we will do,” Singh said. “It’s just too… very emotional… all of our holy books, our whole library, that is all burned… that was everything to us.”

He said the members are banding together through the difficult time.

“We can be sad together, because what can we do about that? It’s very painful,” he said.

Josh Vestal, south of the temple, said his home was broken into Monday night about the same time as the fire.

Burglars broke a door window and stole his telephone, some DVDs his electric guitar and bass and also broke open his freezer with a pick ax, he said. Vestal said he was not at home until about 12:30 a.m.

“It was still smoking and flaming, but nothing like these images I have seen on the news (from the height of the blaze),” he said.

“I was worried that someone might have been inside (the temple),” he said.

Live discussion on banned book triggers fresh controversy

Live discussion of the banned book Sikh Itihaas from gurdwaras in Delhi has added ammo to the ongoing controversy between president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee Paramjit Singh Sarna and president of Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, Amritsar Avtar Singh Makkar.

Makkar said legal action will be taken against those who still possess the book. “The book has been banned and if anyone has any copy, they can give it back to us,” he said.

The book was published in 1999 by the Dharam Parchar Committee of the SGPC, Amritsar, during the tricentenary of the Khalsa Panth. It carried some distorted facts of the Sikh history following which the book was banned three years ago.

Two days ago, Jaswinder Singh Baliawal, Punjab president of SAD (Delhi), in an open letter to SGPC president Makkar raised some vital questions. Showing the letter to The Indian Express, Baliawal said, “Crores were spent on publishing this book, which had misleading facts. Instead of taking action against the culprits, a statement was issued saying the book has been banned and there should be no discussion on it; and if anyone indulges in discussion, legal action will be taken against the person. But what action has been taken against the secretary of Dharam Parchar Committee for publishing the book? By banning the book, will the issue be resolved? Was any Sikh scholar taken into confidence before publishing the book? And more importantly, who is the writer?”

Banda's march got first Khalsa Raj

CHANDIGARH: Exactly 300 years ago, Chhapar Chiri, a small village near here, was witness to a historic battle which laid the foundation of first Khalsa Raj, founded by the great Sikh warrior — Baba Banda Bahadur.

As festivities for the tricentenary of the victory of Sirhind, fought at Chhapar Chiri, reach a crescendo on Tuesday, a massive march of Sikhs led by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which started from Nanded in Maharashtra last month, would reach Lohgarh, the capital of first Khalsa Raj, now located in Himachal Pradesh. It is here that the SGPC is planning a major revival exercise for paying homage to the warrior who avenged the killings of two children of the 10th Sikh master, Guru Gobind Singh, by defeating the formidable army of the Governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan. The ruler had ordered that the Guru's children be bricked alive for not renouncing their faith.

The march assumes significance since it is probably the first time that the Sikhs are attempting, in an organised manner, to give due recognition to places associated with the life and times of ascetic-turned- warrior, who was handpicked by the Guru to lead the Sikhs. These include a gurdwara and a polytechnic college at his birthplace in Rajouri near Jammu, a memorial at Chhapar Chiri, Baba Banda Bahadur museum at Fatehgarh Sahib (named so to mark the 'fateh' (victory) of Sirhind) gurdwara and a fort at Lohgarh near Nahan, where the warrior set up the Khalsa Raj capital and ruled from an area called Mehlanwali.

Sikh bodies divided over Fateh Diwas celebrations

Amritsar Divisions within the Sikh community have once again come to the fore, as they are all set to celebrate the tercentenary commemorating Baba Banda Singh Bahadur’s Sirhind-Fateh Diwas at Sirhind from May 12-14.

The state government and Badal-controlled Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee are flexing muscles to make the event “historic”, while various Sikh bodies, including the Sarna group and Opposition Congress, have vowed to stay away from the celebrations.

The anti-Badal Akali factions and Congress have termed the celebrations mere gimmicks to gain political mileage. The SGPC, however, is of the view that all Sikhs should participate in the function that marks 300 years of Sikh warriors defeating the then Mughal rulers of Sirhind state, following the demise of Guru Gobind Singh in Maharashtra in 1707.

Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee Chief Paramjit Singh Sarna and his brother Harvinder Singh Sarna have already courted controversies for not taking part in the Fateh March that passed through Delhi last week on its way to Punjab from Maharshtra. Sikhs in large number had gathered all through its routes through Madhya Pradesh, UP, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab, while Sarna had termed the march a total failure.

Though nearly all Sikhs revere Banda Bahadur, who established Sikh Raj and took revenge for the killings of Guru Gobind Singh and his family members, including his two young sons, political overtones to the celebrations are playing a spoilsport. Anti-Badal Sikh bodies feel Badal should have taken all into confidence before arranging the event. A mega function is on the anvil, where senior NDA leaders, including BJP top brass such as L K Advani and Nitin Gadkari, are expected to arrive along with chief ministers of various states.

Exhibition of Sikh artefacts, relics of the Gurus, Sikh congregations, religious prayers, mega martial art exhibition and seminars on Sikh history and culture will mark the occasion. “This is an opportunity for Sikhs to remember those great heroes who fought with valour to protect the religion with an unconquerable spirit,” said SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar.

Though Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was first reported to be willing to take part in the celebrations, security concerns and his other engagements forced him to postpone the visit. “We cannot force anyone to join us. The Congress is staying away and so are the Sarna brothers, but we are not bothered. It is a religious programme and they should take part in it. But Sarna is an agent of the Congress, so he will do what his political bosses direct him to do,” says Makkar.

He also said elephants, horses and great display of Sikh martial art Gatka will welcome the Fateh March arriving at Sirhind on May 12. “A national seminar on the life and philosophy of the great warrior, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, are already over,” he said, adding the SGPC will issue commemorative gold and silver coins to mark the occasion and a series of light and sound programmes will also be organised at various district headquarters to apprise people about the sacrifice of Baba to establish Sikh Raj.

Apart from this, a religious procession from Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir, the birth place of Baba Bahadur, and village Gurdas Nangal in Gurdaspur, from where Baba was arrested, will reach at Sirhind. Dal Khalsa, a radical Sikh body, today said they will take out a Khalsa Raj Parade from Chaparchiri to Sirhind on May 12.

In a statement, party spokesperson Kanwarpal Singh said the march will start from Chaparchiri, the place where Baba defeated and killed the Governor of Sirhind. “The march will conclude at Sirhind, where Baba unfurled the Saffron Nishan Sahib and established the first rule of Sikhs,” he said.
