SGPC Condemns Exclusion Of Punjabi Of Punjabi Language From The J&K Official Languages Bill

A day after a massive protest in Jammu & Kashmir by the local Sikhs there demanding Punjabi language to be included in the J&K Official Languages Bill, the SGPC too has come out in support of this demand.
A day after a massive protest in Jammu & Kashmir by the local Sikhs there demanding Punjabi language to be included in the J&K Official Languages Bill, the SGPC too has come out in support of this demand.

Taking strong notice of excluding the Punjabi language from the J&K Official Languages Bill, the apex Sikh body Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has appealed the Indian government to reconsider its move.

SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal has asked the Punjab based Indian parliamentarians to raise voice against this bill in the parliament and make efforts to get Punjabi language included in this bill. “Earlier, the Punjabi language was holding a suitable position in the J&K territory and it was recognized by the constitution of J&K,” he said.

Longowal has said that hundreds of thousands of J&K residents speak Punjabi language and neglecting it as an official language of J&K can’t be justified. “The Indian government has hurt sentiments of all the Punjabi speaking residents of J&K,” he added.

The J&K Sikhs are already being denied the minority status in J&K but now the Indian government has once again subjected them to an unjust move.

It is noteworthy here that the BJP led Indian government is restructuring the administrative setup of J&K after making it a Union Territory of India against the wish of the state’s natives.

On September 2, the Indian government approved a draft legislation to make Urdu, Kashmiri, Dogri, Hindi, and English official languages of J&K while ousting Punjabi. The Indian government is likely to present this bill in the Indian parliament during the monsoon session beginning on September 14.

The Gurudwara usually reopens in May every year but was delayed this year due to the ongoing pandemic.

It was finally decided on August 19 to open the portals on September 4 following a meeting between the office-bearers of Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara Management Trust and the officials of Chamoli district administration.

“This time, due to the pandemic, the number of pilgrims has been restricted to 200 each day. Accordingly, 150 pilgrims will be visiting on the first day,” he said, adding the majority of the pilgrims are from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra, with only four or five being from Uttarakhand.

"Not A Small Case":SC Refuses to Grant Bail to Sajjan Kumar, Jailed In 1984 Riots Case

1984 anti-Sikh riots case: SC refuses to grant bail to Sajjan Kumar

The Supreme Courthas refused to grant bail to former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, a convict in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

The apex court bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde, refused to grant bail to Sajjan Kumar. The top court said, his appeal against his conviction in the 1984 anti-Sikh riot matter, may be taken up for hearing after the Supreme Court starts its physical hearing.

While refusing to grant Sajjan Kumar's bail, the apex court noted that the medical report of the convict (Sajjan Kumar) stated that his hospitalisation is not needed at this present time, and thereby he should not remain in hospital.

Advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for Sajjan Kumar, had sought immediate interim bail claiming that Kumar is ill, adding that his health is not improving. Sajjan Kumar, 74, in his bail application had contended before the apex court that he has been in jail since December 2018 and had lost almost around 8-10 kilograms since then.

Kumar, who is the main accused in a case relating to the brutal killing of five members of a family in Raj Nagar in Delhi, during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, was found guilty, on December 17, 2018, by a Delhi court and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Golden Temple Hazuri Ragis Sore With Head Granthi

A Group of Hazuri Ragis (designated hymn singers) of the Golden Temple has appealed to the Akal Takht acting jathedar to protect their honour as they were being humiliated by the Darbar Sahib head granthi (Priest) while performing kirtan in the sanctum sanctorum.

                                       Onkar Singh :Hazuri Ragi

The president of Shiromani Ragi Sabha, Sri Darbar Sahib, Onkar Singh alleged that there have been several instances when head granthi Giani Jagtar Singh had humiliated them by stopping the recital of a particular shabad (hymn) and begin another one.

“It is against the prevalent tradition and maryada (Sikh code of religious conduct) of kirtan. And it has been happening during the live relay of kirtan on TV, which can be verified from the records,” he said.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Office also checks their beards and turban frequently, to ascertain maryada and ensure that the hair is not dyed or shorn, he said.

“It’s okay with us as we understand that, but in many cases, the beard and turban are checked inside the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple, which is wrong,” he said.

A source in the SGPC, however, said some ragis do not even remember the shabads and take help of mobile phones or written notes. “Some of them hide their mobile phones or notes under the table while performing kirtan in many Gurdwaras and have been caught,” he said.

                                    Giani Jagtar Singh

Ragis are often reprimanded while reciting kirtan and under tension, they further tend to forget the shabad, he added. Jagtar Singh’s assistant Mohinder Singh said, “Giani Jagtar Singh will not give any comment since the issue is of maryada of Darbar Sahib. Moreover, it is under the consideration of Sikh high priests.
