Sikhs bless golden dome for new temple

The Sikh community in Newcastle has been celebrating the latest stage in the construction of a new Temple. The symbolic golden dome, known as a Gumut, was lifted into place on top of the new building, in Newcastle's west end. The new temple replaces the current building, which the community has occupied since the early 1970s. It will be the first purpose-built Sikh place of worship in the North East. The community hopes it will give them a visible presence in the city. The building is expected to be ready to use by February 2013, with an official opening ceremony planned for April.

GHPS, Hargobind enclave on a mission to study Environment

"Our fast paced life styles and match box houses are distancing the children from the beauties of nature – both flora and fauna. Moreover, if our children donot realize the reason for and requirement of preserving the eco system nothing planned at higher levels will ever be effective. With a view to bridge this gap, a visit to the Asola Wildlife Sanctuary was organized for the students", said School Principal Mrs. Jasmeet Kaur

"We at Guru Harkrishan Public School, Hargobind Enclave believe that education should not be restricted to the covers of a book or confined to the four walls of a class room. A child learns more through first hand information", said Sd Balbir Singh School Chairman.

Guides and Teachers gave the children first hand exposure to the whys and wherefores of the need to preserve the eco – system. The photographs in themselves speak volumes and nothing more needs to be said...  In keeping with this concept, the school organized a ‘Study of Historical Monuments Tour’ for the students. A visit to Lodhi Garden was a part of this exercise. "The response of the children during and after the exercise was an eye opener for the teachers," Said Ms Parminder Kaur.

Suspicious man seen at Sikh temple at OAK CREEK

OAK CREEK, Wis. (AP) — A police report says Oak Creek officers detained a man at the Sikh temple where six people were killed in August and found he had ammunition and notebook references to a mass shooting.

Sikh members summoned police last Sunday when the man visited the temple with a backpack. The man told officers he wanted to pray with the Sikhs and was writing a book.

Officers searched the man’s backpack and found duct tape, zip ties, crime scene tape and a notebook with references to the mass shooting in Aurora, Colo. The police report says several boxes of ammunition and an empty gun case were found in his car.

Temple spokesman Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (http://tinyurl.com/b3jhpdl ) police said the man also had $4,000 in cash from the sale of two guns. The man was questioned but not arrested.

Go Green Campaign by GHPS, Hargobind enclave

Guru Harkrishan Public School, Hargobind Enclave, New Delhi, launched the Go Green Campaign in the school. The campaign was given a kick start not with the traditional tree plantation drive but a Nature study exercise, wherein, the students were told about various plants. The aim was to make the students aware of what can be planted, where and how.

The next step was to tell them how to create greenery with plants. A begining was made with a hope that they will carry the message home & in their respective localities. School Principal Mrs. Jasmeet kaur informed that this will be a regular feature in the school so that students could learn about the social responsibilities also.
