As India battles coronavirus just like the
rest of the world, the Turban For Masks campaign in Punjab has really taken
off. As many as 5,000 masks have been made from old turbans from Sikh families
and they are to be distributed among those who cannot afford masks.
This campaign by Sikhs is not restricted to just Punjab
though but is going on many parts of the country. While it originated in the
state, it is gaining national momentum.
In July's first week, the same campaign was started in Gurdwara Guru Ka Taal in Tajanagari, Agra. The numbers of Sikh families that have joined this campaign range in the hundreds and centers have also been set up to collect old turbans.

The
process is simple. Old
turbans are collected by Sikh families. They are then sanitised and converted
into masks. After it is made into a mask, it is sanitised once more and then
delivered to the not so fortunate who require a Mask .
The goal is to produce 1 million Masks. In the first phase the target is to get to 2.5
lakh masks. The campaign is expected to pick up in pace as the days progress.
