Amritsar: Sikh calendar released as Nanakshahi Samat 547

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has sounded the death knell for the Nanakshahi calendar finally by publishing a version that bears the stamp of the lunar-based traditional Bikrami calendar that Sikhs followed before 2003.
Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh on Saturday released this new calendar here as Nanakshahi Samat 547 (2015-16) at his office in the Golden Temple complex. It coincided with the first day of the first month of Chet of the Sikh new year.
Notwithstanding the similarity of the new calendar with the Bikrami datebook, the Jathedar took the courage to claim that "it is a Nanakshahi calendar in letter and spirit, and all Sikhs must celebrate or observe their historic and religious occasions for the current year in accordance with it". When media sought to know whether the calendar was Bikrami or Nanakshahi, he got agitated and replied: "How many times do have I to say that it is Nanakshahi, and only Nanakshahi."
However when reference was made to the similarity with the Bikrami calendar that is in circulation currently, the jathedar avoided giving a reply. He, however, denied that there he or the SGPC had made any attempt to bury the Nanakshahi calendar. "This calendar (the one released on Saturday) is only for Nanakshahi Samat 547. The calendar for the next year (from March 14, 2016) will be based on the report of the soon-to-be-formed committee to sort out the issue," he said, indicating that the committee will be asked to give its report by 2015-end.
Takht Keshgarh Sahib jathedar Giani Mal Singh; Takht Damdama Sahib acting jathedar Giani Gurmukh Singh; Harmandir Sahib priests Giani Raghbir Singh and Giani Gurminder Singh; SGPC officials Roop Singh, Manjit Singh, and Daljit Singh Bedi; and Golden Temple manager Partap Singh were present.
Hard to read
Printed in Gurmukhi, the calendar says "Nanakshahi Samat 547" right at the top. Even the date numerals are in Punjabi and Hindi, in scripts that only a few people in the modern age would be able to read. A vast majority of Sikhs would prefer consulting the common calendar.
Claiming that the SGPC and the jathedar had "killed" the Nanakshahi calendar, Dal Khalsa spokesman Kanwar Pal Singh said: "The community has been cheated. Nanakshahi calendar gave us an independent identity, which this calendar has buried secretly."
Date dispute
He also held the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leadership responsible, saying the proposed committee to resolve the issue was mere eyewash. "By the new calendar, there will be no Parkash Utsav (birth anniversary) of Guru Gobind Singh in 2015. The occasion is listed for Magh 3 (January 16, 2016). The martyrdom day of Guru Arjan Dev, which was in June one last year, will now be on May 22. The Parkash Utsav of Guru Ram Das, which was on October 9 last year, is on October 29 this year," he added.
The Parkash Utsav of Guru Granth Sahib, celebrated on September 1 since 2004 by the original Nanakshahi calendar, will now be celebrated on September 14. The martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur, which Nanakshahi calendar fixed on November 24, now will fall on December 16. The Gurta Gaddi Divas (coronation day) of Guru Granth Sahib has been changed from October 25 to November 13.
SAD (Delhi) president Paramjit Singh Sarna also accused the SGPC and the Akal Takht jathedar of "burying" the Nanakshahi calendar under pressures from Punjab's ruling family of the Badals.

5-year sentence for Sikh Temple assault

A man convicted of assault during a riot at the Sikh Temple in 2012 was sentenced Friday to five years in prison and ordered to pay $48,900 in restitution.
A Sutter County jury in November convicted Mangal Singh Sanghera of assault with a deadly weapon for stabbing Balbar Bains.
Most of the onlookers at the sentencing were supporters of Sanghera. Some of them wrote letters to Judge Brian Aronson, questioning the jury's decision. Every seat in Aronson's courtroom was filled.
Attorneys debated the seriousness of Bains' injuries and discussed the impact of Sanghera's prison sentence on his family. His wife does not work, drive or speak English.

Defense attorney Sara Rief said Sanghera exited the gurdwara to find a brawl. She said Bains' injury was a half-centimeter puncture wound, not a stab wound.

Power of being #together #lookup with optimism !

We were just going to the bed when I got the message that our uncle had met with an accident & he has been taken to a hospital in south Delhi. We immediately rushed to the hospital & found him in a bad position. He had multiple fractures in his bone & doctors had asked for immediate operation in the morning. They asked us to arrange few bottles of blood by morning and handed over a big list of required medicines. While discussing the issue with doctors, they informed us that steel rods are to be inserted in place of multiple fracture.

My uncle felt very depressed when he came to know about the insertion of steel rods. He even started crying, not due to the pain, but due to the fact that if steel rods will be inserted, he won’t be able to walk freely in future. He toldme to do something but I could not understand that what to do or whom to talk at that late hours.

I have a big group of friends & I immediately placed the message on whatsapp. In minutes I got several messages from my friends that they are reaching there for donation of blood.

I got a call from one of my very close friend, a doctor himself. He told me to bring the X ray & other reports to him immediately. I took the reports & rushed towards my doctor friend. I discussed with him about my uncle that he was very depressed on finding the insertion of steel rods. My Doctor friend checked everything & suggested that we can move even without the operaton.

He suggested that if your uncle can take rest of two to three months, without any movement, with heavy weights on his legs, he can be perfectly ok even without the operation. I immediately discussed it with our other family members present in the hospital & we stopped the operation.

My uncle was very happy when he heard that he will be perfectly ok even without the insertion of steel rods. He got a great level of strength & was highly motivated & he started looking upwards with absolute optimism.

The next morning, he was shifted to our home. My friendly doctor visited us & performed the necessary actions on my uncle. It took him almost three months & he was OK. Doctors did certain physiotherapy techniques on him & soon he started walking on his own.

In the summer holidays we decided to go to Hemkund sahib where one has to walk 21 Kms one way i.e. 42 Kms both ways. My uncle came with us to the trip. That was the most memorable moment for all of us as he was walking freely on the hills with great strength & optimism. It was a moment of joy for all of us as our efforts were successful and our dearest uncle was absolutely on his own & he was walking even without any stick. All this could happen as all of us were #together & with positive #lookup in our mind.

Therefore, we must be optimistic even in the most grave situations as the light of optimism can brighten our future at any minute. Even you must log on to the website https://housing.com/ as it is a most optimistic website that can offer you a wide variety of property at various locations in India. You can also promote it by tagging @housing or +Housing-com with the hashtag #together and #lookup.

Sikh student gets compensation in NZ racial harassment case

Melbourne: A Sikh student has been awarded 45,000 dollars in damages by a rights tribunal in New Zealand for racial harassment and humiliation he suffered at the hands of his Indian-origin employers.

Satnam Singh told the Human Rights Tribunal he suffered racial abuse, culminating in a physical assault, while employed for two months at Scorpion Liquor in Mount Roskill, a suburban area in the city of Auckland, The New Zealand Herald reported.
Singh was also paid less than minimum wage, earning between 6 to 7 dollars an hour. Store manager Shane Singh and his mother Raj Devi, who owns the business, did not respond to the claim and took no part in proceedings.
The decision of the tribunal said Singh took the part-time job in January 2012 after coming to New Zealand on a student visa.
During his two months at Scorpion Liquor, Shane Singh frequently made racial remarks. He also made comments about Singh's long hair, a requirement for his Sikh religion.

Britain’s Sikh community tightens grip, asks candidates to adhere to the manifesto

LONDON: Britain's Sikh community are tightening their grip over the outcome of the upcoming general election with the Sikh Federation writing to the main candidates in over 100 constituencies urging them to adhere to their recently released election manifesto demanding allocation of a site in central London for a permanent monument to Sikhs who lost their lives in the World War 1.

The politically active Sikh community have also called for a statutory code of practice on items of the Sikh faith in order to prevent discrimination in the workplace and public spaces besides an independent inquiry into the actions of the British government in relation to the Amritsar and Delhi massacres of 1984.

Bhai Amrik Singh, the chair of the Sikh Federation said each candidate in the 100 constituencies are being asked to provide a general endorsement of the Sikh manifesto and indicate those items they are prepared to specifically commit to and work on if elected.

Singh said "So far the Labour leadership continue to take the Sikh vote for granted. We will publish a summary of the responses from candidates in the 100 constituencies one month before the general election on May 7. We are also planning meetings with the leadership of the main parties to get their commitment to specific issues that will be shared widely with the 700,000 strong Sikh community. Sikh voters will then look at both the support of the party as well as the individual candidates before casting their vote".

Bold decision for growth & success !

It’s always expected that if you want to make a change, you must be bold enough, strongest as well with positive attitude. It’s the positivity of thoughts that can generate fruits even in a desert. Just think of Gujrat. It has no water or can say it has very little water, still it is the major producer of Electricity in India. What they did, they took the positive attitude & decided to use the sun light for making electricity. The result is that today they don’t have any kind of scarcity of power and it has resulted into the mega development of the state. Therefore, we must always be capable to take strong decisions for favourable responses.

One of my friend did his PHD from one of the Indian university but the placement was not that exciting. He got much lesser than what he expected. He had big plans to buy a new home, a car and all that but with that small salary he knew he can’t meet his goals.

Therefore, he took a bold decision to Start a new life. He resigned from the Job. He had done his PHD in the Power sector. He immediately applied for a loan from the bank. On viewing his qualification, bankers immediately sanctioned the loan. With that amount, he purchased a running unit related to his field and started manufacturing Solar panels.

He knew that power is a major source for the development of our country. So he decided to produce solar panels for his personal growth as well for the growth of the country. Soon he became the major producer of Solar panels in the country. He even started exporting to various countries.

He was on the path of Glory & success just because he took a bold & right decision at the right minute. Instead of doing a small job, today he has given a job to over a hundred persons in his factory.

That’s what we call the success story of a person that wanted to make a change. A person who wanted to change the trends of job seekers into job creators. He changed his thoughts & today he is a successful businessman.

Very recently, he was awarded the TOP EXPORTERS award by a top most institution of the country for his growth, development as well exports. This kind of persons who are bold enough to take strongest decisions often make the history.

Therefore, we must always look upwards if we want to achieve success in our life. There is a website named  https://housing.com/. This website offers a housing property as well all kind of new projects for the successful entrepreneurs. You too can log into this website and can also promote it by tagging @housing or +Housing-com with the hashtag #StartANewLife. A video of the concerned website, showing how to look upwards is also being produced below. You must look into it to promote yourself.

He has indeed changed his destiny. He has also given a new way of life to his employees. He is a source of encouragement & achievement for his entire staff. They all feel pround on working under his guidance. And this is just because, he was bold enough to resign from his job & take a right step. We feel proud of him.

Hola Mohalla: Punjab's rich and colourful tradition

A day assigned for mock battles for his troops by the 10th guru of Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh, has come to be the symbol of Punjab's own rich religious and cultural tradition. The festival of 'Hola Mohalla', as it is known, takes place this weekend in this Sikh religious town.
Hola Mohalla, celebrated a day after Holi, the Hindu festival of colours, has carved out its own unique place in Punjab's and Sikh religion's calendar. The festival made its beginning around 1701 as Guru Gobind Singh wanted his troops to have mock battles to keep them battle ready.
Tens of thousands of Nihang Sikhs assemble in this town, home to Takht Keshgarh Sahib, the second holiest of Sikh shrines (after Harmandar Sahib or Golden Temple in Amritsar), every year to be part of the festival.
The shrine is famous as it was here that Guru Gobind Singh founded the 'Khalsa Panth', the modern day Sikh religion, in April 1699.
During the festivities, various sects (deras) of Nihangs go in a procession from the main gurdwara and pass through the holy town.
The procession then culminates at a stadium where the Nihang Sikhs perform 'Gatka', a traditional form of martial art in which age-old weapons and equipment are used to showcase mock battles.
"It is an amazing sight to see the Gatka performance. The festivity around the procession and the colourful atmosphere make it a great spectacle to watch," travel writer and author Puneetinder Kaur Sidhu told IANS.

Optimism with positive behaviour is the crux of life !

Optimism is must if you wish to achieve something in your life. If you want to look upwards, you have to shed all of the negative thoughts.  Just a few months ago I read about Mr. Kailash  Satyarthi, who started his activities as a social activist on the ‘Bachpan Bachao Platform’. His activities reached to such a scale that he was selected for the Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2014. He never started with a thought that he had to get the Nobel. He just started his journey with a positive mind, with optimism, with a will to do something for the downtrodden and the outcome was the Nobel Peace Prize. We feel proud that we belong to a country where we have persons of that calibre.

Now i will tell you about a person who is just a Tea seller. No I am not talking about our Prime Minister. This person is a Tea seller at the ITO in Delhi. His name is Laxman Rao. I just got a call from CNN IBN channel to come for a discussion on the Delhi elections on ‘Chay Pe Charcha’. The official cab took me to the spot & I saw a person making Tea on the footpath. We were told to sit on the nearby stones. He offered us a cup of tea & soon the discussion started.

It was my very first meeting with him and I got a strange feeling on finding that he too was a speaker in the discussion. He spoke so well that I was surprised on his vast knowledge on various issues. He was a very active participant in the discussion. Soon the show was over & I started to leave. But just than I saw a  big lot of books lying nearby. Out of curiosity, I went there to see what kind of books these were & to my surprise, all of these books were written by that Tea seller Mr Laxman Rao - Author.

Soon he became very friendly & explained about himself. He said that after writing his very first book he went to various publishers but none of them agreed to print it. But he continued his efforts & when he found none to publish his book, he himself published it at his own cost. One after another he wrote dozens of books & all of them were published by himself.

His books are so famous that these are regularly sold at various Book fairs. He was awarded by the President Smt Pratibha Patil. He is a Blogger too. I know we all have thousands of friends on Facebook but have you ever sought friendship with a CHAY WALA AUTHOR. Just try it & you will find a great personality in him as he is also very active on Facebook. Just search Laxman Rao on your FB page & you will find him.

Even though he is an ordinary Tea vendor but his will to look upwards, his optimistic behaviour, his positive vibrations have made him a great author. Have a cup of tea with him if you want to see a real hero of life. Please log on to the website https://housing.com/lookup if you too really want to look upwards in your life. Pic has been taken with thanks from the weblink https://housing.com/lookup. Plz shed all of your negative thoughts and start looking upwards. Laxman Rao is a great example for all of us.

DSGMC President condemns racial abuse of Sikh boy in Georgia,USA

The president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Manjit Singh GK has condemned the incident of racial abuse of a Sikh boy in Georgia recently of which the video recording has gone viral over the social networking sites. The Sikh boy identified as Harsukh Singh was called terrorist by a group of school students.

“The aghast incident and such incidents happening the past, has been a cause of pain for the Sikh diaspora living in India and the outside world and my appeal to everyone is not to hurl such expletives on the Sikhs. Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee contributes towards Campaign for Sikh Identity in USA

Manjit Singh G K, DSGMC President with Dr. Rajwant Singh, Chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education and Senior Advisor to the Washington based National Sikh Campaign

Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee President Manjit Singh GK announced a contribution of $10,000 towards an awareness campaign to educate Americans about Sikhism and Sikh Identity.

Manjit Singh GK, President  & Manjinder Singh Sirsa, General  Secy. of DSGMC, appeared with Dr. Rajwant Singh, Chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education and Senior Advisor to the Washington based National Sikh Campaign, in New Delhi in a press meet and endorsed an American Sikh plan to reach out to millions of fellow Americans. This awareness initiative is being spearheaded by newly formed National Sikh Campaign (NSC) based in Washington. NSC has engaged AKPD, a high profile media consultancy founded by President Obama’s top political strategists David Axelrod and David Plouffe, which has managed Obama’s senate election and two presidential campaigns. APKD has submitted a plan to launch a presidential style nationwide media campaign on Sikhs.
Sikhs in the United States have faced numerous incidents of violence, discrimination and prejudice since 9/11 due to ignorance about Sikhism. A country- wide survey and polling was conducted by Hart Research Associates headed by Geoffrey Garrin, Hillary Clinton’s former top political strategist. The purpose of this most comprehensive study about Sikhs in America was to identify the problem of ignorance and confusion about Sikh identity and suggest remedies for them. The findings of this national research was released last month which concluded that 60% of Americans knew nothing about Sikhs and only 3% of them have interacted with Sikhs. Over 48% identified them as either Arabs or Muslims. 54% of the Americans were neutral towards Sikhs and 16% were cool. However, upon learning about the Sikhs, Americans warmed up to them across demographics. AKPD will prepare ads based on these findings and these ads will be vetted by experts before national media campaign is launched.
Manjit Singh GK said, “We feel that DSGMC has the moral responsibility to support such innovative strategies to fight ignorance and prejudice against Sikhs and to educate all non-Sikhs about Sikh religion and its traditions. We are satisfied with this approach and this will help in changing the perception of the Sikhs in USA.  We stand behind any plan to make our community strong in America.”
Dr. Rajwant Singh, Chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education and Senior Advisor to the National Sikh Campaign, said, “We are grateful to DSGMC for this kind gesture and it sends a strong message to the entire American Sikh community that Sikhs in India care for them. This is the most significant step taken by the Sikh community in the United States and this kind of high level media campaign is critical for our community’s standing. There is no substitute for media strategy and it is imperative that all Sikhs join in this effort. We appeal to all Sikhs to contribute generously to make sure our coming generations do not face the negative environment.”
Gurwin Singh Ahuja, Co-Founder of NSC, said, “DSGMC’s support is big boost to this effort and we are highly encouraged by this contribution. We are confident that this campaign will produce the desired results for the community.”
