COVID-19 Masks Are Being Made From Old Turbans To Distribute To The Needy:Gaining National Momentum

As India battles coronavirus just like the rest of the world, the Turban For Masks campaign in Punjab has really taken off. As many as 5,000 masks have been made from old turbans from Sikh families and they are to be distributed among those who cannot afford masks.

This campaign by Sikhs is not restricted to just Punjab though but is going on many parts of the country. While it originated in the state, it is gaining national momentum.

In July's first week, the same campaign was started in Gurdwara Guru Ka Taal in Tajanagari, Agra. The numbers of Sikh families that have joined this campaign range in the hundreds and centers have also been set up to collect old turbans.

The process is simple. Old turbans are collected by Sikh families. They are then sanitised and converted into masks. After it is made into a mask, it is sanitised once more and then delivered to the not so fortunate who require a Mask .

The goal is to produce 1 million Masks. In the first phase the target is to get to 2.5 lakh masks. The campaign is expected to pick up in pace as the days progress.

Jallianwala Bagh’s Narrow Lane Gets New Sculptures

The narrow lane, the first stop for tourists visiting the historic Jallianwala Bagh memorial in Amritsar, has got a facelift. On April 13, 1919, this lane made the only entry and exit point to the Bagh.

Now, new sculptures of martyrs have come up on both high walls of the narrow lane. These sculptures represent ordinary Punjabis from different walks of life in the year 1919. They are sculptures of men, women, children — young and old — walking into the Bagh to never return.

“These sculptures will make visitors realise the people that walked into the Bagh on the day of Baisakhi in 1919. Earlier people walked this narrow lane without knowing its history. Now they will walk with history,” said Rajya Sabha member and the Trustee of Jallianwala Bagh Trust, Shwait Malik.
The lane has also got new floor and it has been partially covered from above to avoid the birds sitting on these sculptures.
