In a press conference organised here, general secretary of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and minister of state in Punjab, Sh. Manjinder Singh Sirsa informed the media personnel that he has got issued a legal notice through his advocate Sh. S.S. Ahluwalia to the Sh. Rohit Dhawan, director of an upcoming movie namely 'Dishoom' as well as to its heroine Ms. Jacqueline Fernandez; for initiating criminal legal proceedings against both the accused. Issuing a copy of the notice to the media, Mr. Sirsa claimed that in the movie, Ms. Jacqueline Fernandez has been shown dancing to tunes of a particular song, with a Kirpaan tied to a belt and dangling between her legs. He said that Kirpaan is one of the essential Kakaar born by a practising Sikh (only Amritdhari Sikh can wear Kirpaan). The song in question has intentionally insulted the sacredness and respect of Kirpaan and the movie's director as well as heroine both are responsible.
Sh. Sirsa said that the sacredness and respect of Kirpan has been admitted and appreciated not only by various high courts and supreme court of India but also courts worldwide. The constitution of India also confers the right to bear Kirpan by persons professing Sikh faith, which itself reflects the importance and sacredness of Kirpaan in Sikhism. Therefore, the film director or cast must not be allowed to disrespect this religious symbol of the Sikh community in the guise of right to freedom of expression, which cannot be exercised while hurting the religious sentiments of people.
Sh. Sirsa informed that the controversial song, which has been uploaded on youtube.com, has already started hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikh community as he is already receiving numerous complaints in this matter from various Sikh bodies. Through the legal notice, Mr. Manjinder Singh Sirsa asked director Rohit Dhawan to immediately remove all the trailers/videos of the aforesaid song uploaded at youtube.com or other websites; either delete the song from the movie or re-shoot its video without the Kirpan worn by the actress and to make public apology along with Ms. Jacqueline Fernandez to the Sikh community for the deliberate insult done to a respectable Sikh religious symbol. He warned that if the these remedial steps are not taken, DSGMC would initiate criminal proceedings against the accused persons u/s 295A & 120B for hurting the religious sentiments of the Sikh community and will also file a petition in the court for banning the release of the movie.
