The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) is actively taking up the problems faced by the Sikhs in wearing turban in the foreign countries with the foreign ministry of Government of India.
DSGMC General Secretary who also has been a former MLA ,Manjinder Singh Sirsa today had written letters to the External Affairs Minister of Government of India Sushma Swaraj and Ambassador of India in USA - Richard Verma.
Sirsa told that the removal of turban in name of security check of Indo-Canadian Sikh Jasjeet Singh on American airport was unfortunate. He also said that on 9 February 2016 Mexican Airlines Company telling Actor Waris Ahluwalia to remove turban is also unfortunate.In letter to Swaraj - Sirsa said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been meeting Sikh Diaspora during his foreign visits but it was not helping solve the issues of Sikhs. He asked Government of India to make sincere efforts to resolve these issues.
He also told Sushma Swaraj that Sikhs are progressive community and have become successful in foreign countries with their hard work and it was matter of honour for India Prime Minister had given assurances to Sikhs - still it was not showing up in actions. Sirsa suggested Foreign Minister to take steps to solve the issues of Sikhs specially residing in America, France and other Foreign countries. He dared that any Sikh told to remove turban in the name of security check is not acceptable to Sikhs.
In letter to Richard Verma Sirsa in detail wrote that Sikhs have made tremendous contributions worldwide, he gave instance of Sikhs contribution in World War 1 and 2 and even now they are contributing in a big for safety and security in foreign nations. He reminded the promise made by American President Barack Obama in 2010 to Sikhs for bringing a law for stopping removal of turban of Sikhs at time of security check by bringing amendment in internal security. He appealed to the security agencies not to look at turban with suspicion but as a symbol of religious faith.
