Sikh Mission Haryana Will Conduct Beautiful Dastar Competition at District Level

Dubai Gurudwara to host daily iftaar for Muslims during Ramadan - Connected To India

Surender Singh Kandhari  known for is for being one of the founders of Guru Nanak Darbar, the UAE's only Gurdwara.

The need of the hour is to promote tolerance at all levels. Long-time Dubai resident Surender Singh Kandhari believes this so strongly that he has dedicated his second book, Lighthouse of Tolerance - set to launch on September 23 - entirely to the subject.

The Indian expat has been at the forefront of promoting interfaith harmony over the years, making news (and warming hearts) especially during Ramadan, when free iftars are hosted by Gurdwara - and Muslims and non-Muslims are welcomed alike to share a meal. He has also represented the UAE as a delegate at various global summits to promote tolerance and peace.

He notes that the principles of Sikhism - that "we are all equal and should respect all religions" - is the bedrock for his stance on interfaith harmony. "People use money and politics to create divides and this is harmful to peaceful coexistence," states Surender Singh

"In the UAE, they respect the otherness of others, irrespective of religion, caste and creed," he observes. And that is what he explores in his new book. The self-published 272-pager will be the expat's second authored work after his autobiography, which was published in 2018.

A better understanding of what it means to peacefully coexist is what Surender Singh  is hoping people will eventually take away from his book.

Interview with Surender Singh Kandhari - Chairman of Al Dobowi Group - YouTube

"Peace can only be achieved when one puts one's mind to it," he asserts. "There is a saying in our scripture Sri Guru Granth Sahib : 'Mann Jeete Jag Jeete'. It means if you can control your mind, you can control the world. I believe if there is peace in the house, there can be peace in the world."

"StopIgnoringSikhs":California Sikh Sangat Begins A Campaign For Inclusion in School Curriculum

Sikh Coalition and Jakara Movement poster for campaign #StopIgnoringSikhs.

The Sikh Coalition and the Jakara Movement launched Sept.1, 2020, a campaign to demand California state educational authorities to include the Sikh community in their Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum conversation.

Titled StopIgnoringSikhs, the campaign claims the most recent draft of the Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum has no meaningful or positive inclusion of the Sikh community with stories about Sikhs.

The campaign began with written petitions from 52 gurdwaras and more than 1,200 signatories. The Sikh Coalition, in a press release, claims the state educational officials public gathering August 13, did not give all 25 California Sikhs a chance to present their testimony on this.

“The most recent draft of the Model Curriculum has stripped out or diluted specific mentions of many different underrepresented communities, including Sikhs; this will, in turn, force individual teachers to pick and choose which groups they teach about in their classrooms, and make it extremely unlikely that any teacher will include a lesson plan about Sikhs. This is unacceptable,” Sikh Coalition Education Director Pritpal Kaur is quoted saying in a press release.

Jakara Movement Executive Director Naindeep Singh said, “Despite us providing detailed examples, recommendations, and extensive community outreach, the Model Curriculum renders hardly a mention of the Sikhs, who have continually shaped California’s history for over 125 years.”

There are believed to be between 500,000 and 700,000 Sikhs in the United States, roughly half of them in the Central Valley of California.

The StopIgnoringSikhs campaign plans to begin an email and phone call campaign directed at the California Department of Education and Instructional Quality Commission during the public comment period.

MHA Nod For FCRA Licence to Golden Temple For 5 years

The Union government has granted a Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) licence to Sri Harmandir Sahib at Amritsar in Punjab for five years.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) granted the licence after the Golden Temple management applied for FCRA registration on May 27, 2020.

At the Golden Temple, the management aims to run a free community kitchen, give financial assistance to the poor and needy, including children. So far, the management under the aegis of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has been able to fulfill these objectives through domestic donations. Now, it will also be able to receive foreign contributions to meet expenses on these noble endeavors.

The Golden Temple is not only one of the main religious places of the Sikhs, but also a symbol of human brotherhood and equality. Everyone, irrespective of caste, creed, or race can seek spiritual solace and religious fulfillment without any hindrance at the holy place.

New Learning Centre At Sikh Gurdwara in Wolverhampton Approved

Plans to build a Sikh learning centre to teach young congregation members of a Wolverhampton temple have been given the go-ahead.

Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Wednesfield has been granted permission to convert disused adjacent offices on Albert Squire Road into the facility.

The two-storey learning centre will feature eight classrooms, a kitchen, toilets, storage facilities, a service room as well as 12 dedicated parking spaces.

There will also be space for a retail shop as well as a two bedroom flat, which the temple says would suit a small family

As well as holding Punjabi classes and teaching about Sikh heritage, the temple committee said it would also use the space for meetings.

The offices were previously a family advice centre and were owned by the City of Wolverhampton Council, before being taken over by the temple, which says the development will benefit young people.

"The aim of the project is to teach the youth Punjabi classes/culture and make them aware of Sikhism to its roots. This will help the youth to integrate with others and learn the social skills."

City of Wolverhampton Council planning officer Colin Noakes said: "The proposed use will bring this vacant building back into and acceptable use.

"The proposal will allow the adjacent temple to provide enhanced facilities for its users."
