Resolution in Congress Seeks to Resettle Afghan Hindus, Sikhs in USA

WASHINGTON: Describing Sikhs and Hindus in Afghanistan as “endangered minorities”, a resolution introduced in US Congress has sought to resettle these persecuted religious communities from the war-torn country to America.

Introduced in the House of Representatives last week by Congresswoman Jackie Speier and co-sponsored by seven others, the resolution supports refugee protection for Sikhs and Hindus in Afghanistan, noting the “systematic religious persecution, discrimination and existential danger” faced by the members of these communities.

“Sikhs and Hindus are indigenous but endangered minorities in Afghanistan, numbering approximately 700 out of a community that recently included over 8,000 members,” the resolution stated.

It supports resettling Sikhs and Hindus from Afghanistan in US under the US Refugee Admissions Programme pursuant to the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Noting that Islamic militants attacked a Gurdwara in Kabul on March 25, killing 25 worshipers, the resolution said terrorists made further attempts on the lives of the survivors before and after the funeral for the victims. “These acts follow a greater pattern of targeted violence against Sikhs, Hindus, and other minorities in Afghanistan in recent years,” it said.

Anti-Sikh Riots Case: Court Directs Delhi Police To Continue Providing Security To Witness Abhishek Verma

A court directed Delhi Police on Tuesday to continue providing security for a month to controversial arms dealer Abhishek Verma, a witness in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case against former Congress leader Jagdish Tytler.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Harjyot Singh Bhalla directed the DCP (South) Delhi Police to reassess the threat perception to Abhishek Verma as well as senior advocate H S Phoolka, who is representing the complainant in the case ;keeping in view the orders passed by the high court and the trial court.

                     Senior Advocate H S Phoolka

The CMM directed that the court's earlier order, in which it was recorded that the judge had received a letter containing threats to Verma and Phoolka, be sent to DCP. The CMM noted that the Delhi High Court had also sent the copy of the letter to letter to the police commissioner earlier and had asked to look into it and enhance the security granted to Verma.

The court also said that Abhishek Verma may approach the high court in the matter. In his application, Verma told the court that the security cover provided to him has suddenly been withdrawn by Delhi Police without any prior notice or intimation and also without re-evaluating the threat perception to him and his family members.

The conduct of the CBI and the police has left Verma and his family members totally exposed and vulnerable and at the mercy of the anti-social elements, who are looking for an opportunity to eliminate the applicant and his family members, the applicant said

It said that Verma is constantly receiving death threats vide calls and e-mails to pressurise him not to depose against Tytler before the court and subsequently not to proceed with Polygraph Test as directed by the court.

It further claimed that several witnesses in the case are already tampered with and many others have not been forthcoming to depose against influential persons.

Team of “Sikh Aware” Resolves The Issue of Amritdhari Sikh Not Being Allowed To wear Kirpan At Work In New Zealand

                               Amandeep Singh:Amritdhari Sikh

AUCKLAND, NZ—Amandeep Singh, an Amritdhari Sikh is working as truck driver since Oct 2019 in Auckland, New Zealand. Due to a complaint by fellow employees, he was requested to provide a letter from the NZ Police stating that the Kirpan is legal at workplaces in New Zealand on 4th June 2020.

Amandeep Singh approached the police directly and through local Gurdwara committees. However, despite repeated follow-up, the police have not responded with the letter required.

On 27th July, the employer issued a second follow up letter requesting the written confirmation from the police. Despite repeated follow-up, no response was received. On Monday, 10th August, the employer informed Amandeep Singh that he cannot come to the workplace wearing a Kirpan till he gets the letter from the NZ Police.

Amandeep contacted Sikh Aware to help him out with the issue. Amandeep Singh had a firm resolve that he will not go to work without wearing a Kirpan and preferred to stay at home.

The news of this incident spread far and wide and even the President of SGPC (The presiding body of the Sikh Gurdwaras in Punjab) Gobind Singh Longowal took notice and asked that the Indian Government raise this issue with the New Zealand Government. He also asked the Sikh Institutions of New Zealand to try and resolve this issue at the earliest.

Harpreet Singh Co-Founder of "Sikh Aware"

The team at Sikh Aware contacted the employer directly and also through the trade union and informed the employer that it is in potential breach of the Employment Relations Act and Human Rights Act and asked the employer to seek legal advice

On providing the relevant information regarding the potential breaches of the law, the employer agreed to allow Amandeep Singh back to the workplace while wearing the Kirpan. The employer also agreed to pay Amandeep Singh for the 4 days he was not allowed to come to work.

To resolve this entire issue, Sikh Aware also requested the assistance of Labour Party candidate Baljit Kaur who also engaged with the police and the local MP of Amandeep Singh’s electorate Louisa Wall who promptly replied and promised to assist and speak to the employer even on the weekend.  Baljit Kaur also spoke to the police who said that they are working on the letter and shall provide that soon.
