I Accuse.....

I Accuse: The Anti-Sikh Violence Of 1984 By Jarnail Singh, Penguin/Viking 165 pages Rs 350

Sikh diaspora seeks explanation for injustice to victims of 1984 carnage

Sarabjit Pandher
CHANDIGARH, November 21, 2009

On the eve of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s arrival in the U.S., different advocacy, human rights groups, networks and Sikh organisations, have put up a coordinated campaign across North America and Europe to expose the denial of justice to the thousands of victims of the November 1984 anti-Sikh carnage.

According to a release on Saturday, these groups have appealed to President Barack Obama, members of the U.S. Congress, human rights organisations, the media and the people of the U.S., to ask Dr. Singh to explain the events of November 1984 and their aftermath.

They demanded that Dr. Singh should tell the world community how continuous mistreatment, abuse and killings of Sikhs, Dalits and other religious minorities, did not establish an ongoing pattern of targeting minorities in a “supposedly democratic India.” They asked the international community to negate India’s claim of respect for human rights, justice for all, and democracy.

One such campaign is spearheaded by a New York-based attorney, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who is the legal adviser to Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), a U.S.-based human advocacy, which in collaboration with the All-India Sikh Students Federation and its president Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad, want to disseminate true and correct information, statistics, figures and data regarding the “Genocide of Sikhs in November 1984.”

‘Indicted shielded’

In the appeal to President Obama, the SFJ emphasised that the aftermath was worse than the riots themselves as successive Indian governments not only failed to prosecute the guilty, but continued to shield those leaders indicted by inquiry commissions. Most of them were given seats in parliament and positions in the Union Cabinet.

One Shoe Isn’t Quite Enough

The missile he threw at the home minister made a statement; now Jarnail Singh pens a searing book.
Jaya Jaitly

The vicious pre-planned slaughter of the Sikh people in 1984 following Indira Gandhi’s assassination did not just leave every Sikh traumatised. It also deeply affected their psyche, their faith in their neighbours, in the system, in the state, in the very idea of justice itself.

For many of us non-Sikhs, it was a defining moment in our lives. On October 31 that year, I saw Sikhs being beaten on Lodi Road; the police told us to move on and not bother about it since we were not Sikhs. We saw trucks loaded with white-capped men shouting khoon ka badla khoon se lenge. We saved two Sikhs from being thrown over the Safdarjang flyover, hiding them in our car and ensuring they reached home safely. We kept their two-wheeler for over three months till they had the courage to come back for it. On the afternoon of November 1, we found slashed, shattered, blood-covered Sikh families in Trilokpuri.

When we went to the Lt Governor to ask for relief, he told us colour TVs would be provided to see Mrs Gandhi’s funeral.

With a team of university students, I ran a relief camp at Farash Bazaar Police Station for three months, fighting for their rehabilitation. When we went to the Lt Governor on Nov 2 to ask for relief, he told us that colour TVs would be provided in the camps to watch Mrs Gandhi’s funeral. Three days later when all the killing had stopped, I was stopped by armymen with guns. “Where were you three days ago?” I shouted. That was when I discovered the bylanes of Trilokpuri, Nand Nagri and Kalyanpuri colonies. The capital was strewn with molten flesh, burning tyres, tresses of hair. The devastation was worse than any wrought by a natural calamity. It was certainly the day that I, a mother of two children and an IAS officer’s wife, finally grew up. Reading Jarnail Singh’s I Accuse brought the old anger and agony back.

Jarnail’s book is excellent material for a study of the nature of festering injustice. Khushwant Singh’s Foreword speaks of the perpetrators and that “they still need to be brought to justice”. Jarnail gives various examples of how “everything was done to prevent justice from taking its course”. Those who were only children then must know that Sikh homes and establishments were targeted with voters’ lists distributed to organised mobs. Survivors repeatedly mentioned kerosene, iron rods, burning tyres and some inflammable white powder as common methods of killing.

Policemen who prevented killings were summarily transferred; those who allowed and encouraged it or disarmed Sikhs who defended themselves were later promoted. No action was taken against the 145 police personnel mentioned in various reports. The first fir was filed in 1994, 10 years later. Many local perpetrators became councillors, mlas, and even cabinet ministers in Rajiv Gandhi’s time. No statements were taken, chargesheets were deliberately faulty and bail was given to murderers based on cyclo-styled application forms by lawyers close to Congress leaders. Old men defending women and children were killed; some surviving youth became drug addicts. One of the many mass murderers was given life imprisonment. The CBI at one point claimed it had no time to investigate, but had the time to give a clean chit to another perpetrator after polls had been announced. This made home minister P. Chidambaram announce that he was “happy”, provoking Jarnail to throw a shoe at him at a press conference.

Jarnail poignantly describes Delhi neighbourhoods that were innocent and fearless till that fateful day. His disabled older brother was roughed up by the mob and went into shock. “He had always been treated with consideration. That day he learned the only thing that mattered was that he was a Sikh,” Jarnail writes.

Can the Sikhs put the events of 1984 behind them and move on, as the prime minister recently advised them to do? Jarnail writes: “If people have lost their lives in a storm, it is a different matter; but how can a massacre be forgotten? Especially when there’s been no justice?”

Last month, central ministries placed ads in newspapers costing crores for Indira Gandhi’s death anniversary, lauding her many great qualities. It would not have cost anything more to add a few lines paying homage to the Sikhs who were killed in the violence that followed. Clearly, a shoe isn’t enough to remind the cynical and insensitive Congress party of the elusive word ‘justice’.

Model code of conduct should be imposed on SGPC: Mann

Jalandhar, Nov 21 (PTI) Model code of conduct should be imposed on Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) as its term has already expired, a prominent Sikh leader demanded today.

"SGPC is largely known as mini parliament of Sikhs and as the term of its elected representatives has already expired, the present committee has no right to take any policy decision," President of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) Simaranjit Singh Maan told reporters here.

He said the Sikh Gurudwara Judicial Commission (SGJC) should immediately impose model poll code of conduct on the Committee.

"We want that SGJC should conduct free and fair election, which is its constitutional responsibility and impose the mandatory code of conduct", he added.

Blueprint for peace corridor between India and Pakistan

By Ravinder Singh Robin

Amritsar, Nov 20 - ANI: Under the aegis of the Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy (IMTD), the US based NGO is preparing a blueprint for the peace corridor between India and Pakistan in order to support the safe and easy passage of pilgrims to Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib.

Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib is situated in Pakistans Narowal District, where Guru Nanak spent more than 18 years of his life. Sikh pilgrims have been demanding a safe passage to the Gurdwara KartarpurSahib from Dera Baba Nanak for years. The Gurdwara is about four km from the Indian side where corridor is to be constructed.

The NGO has currently enrolled engineers, architects and businessmen from India, Pakistan and the United States for this purpose.

The IMTD is a non-profit organization founded in 1992 by Ambassador John W. McDonald and Dr. Louise Diamond to promote a systems-based approach to peace building.

The IMTD believes that involving professionals would be practical steps in the construction of the corridor that would be a major step in the on going Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) between India and Pakistan.

Surinder Singh, an engineer from USA, who visited the Indian side of Dera Baba Nanak on Friday along with Anudeep Singh and his wife Surjit Kaur informed ANI that with the help of other professional members of the committee they would prepare a master plan of thecorridor.

He said that he has already visited Pakistani side and examined the viability of the proposed construction of the corridor.

It is pertinent to mention that more than 40 acres of land had already been purchased near the Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib with the help of foreign-based Sikhs, prominent contributors being the American Gurdwara Prabhandhak Committee, J. B. Singh of USA and Ranjit Singh of Switzerland.

Singh said that the idea is to promote a religious corridor linking the Sikh holy sites across the Indo-Pak border, and added that this peace corridor would help bridge the gulf between the peoples of India and Pakistan

Optimist Anudeep Singh, another member of the committee, said that construction of the Kartarpur Corridor is a task that is of utmost importance to the Sikh community and the dream of millions of people will turn into reality soon.

He said that to fulfil this dream the onus lies on leadership on India and Pakistan who should come together for this issue.

The Sikh diaspora has initiated efforts on various levels to include the Gurdwara Kartarpur corridor in bilateral talks between India and Pakistan.

Anudeep Singh told ANI that a number of representatives have already met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh in this regards and PM assured to take steps in this regards.

Last year, then External Affaira Minister Pranab Mukherjee visited the site to assess the feasibility of reopening the corridor to facilitate easy movement of pilgrims.

In order to assist in the smooth transitioning of the project, the IMTD has formed a committee consisting of five members from India, six from the USA and five from Pakistan.

From India Dr. Jairoop Singh, Vice Chancellor, Anudeep Singh, a businessman, B.S. Goraya a social activist, Kuldeep Singh Wadala an activist for Kartarpur Langah committee.

Renowned Pakistani architect and former Chairman of the Institute of Architects in Pakistan, Syed Azmat Ali Zaidi, will be the project director who will be responsible for implementing the feasibility study from Pakistani side.

Other members are engineer Surinder Singh, Gurcharan Singh of the World Bank, Amar Singh Malhi, board member of the Guru Nanak Foundation of America, and Avtar Singh Pannu, President of the NGO, Sikhs for Justice are among the members of the committee. - ANI

Sikh Gurdwara judicial panel slaps contempt notice on SGPC

November 19th, 2009 A Kaur

Amritsar, Punjab: In what has come has come as a blow to the SGPC management, the Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission (SGJC) has slapped a contempt notice on SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar and secretary Dalmegh Singh for allegedly violating the commission directions in respect of commissioning of a private firm for the audit of the SGPC.

The full bench of the commission has fixed December 1 as the next date of hearing in the case. The SGJC has issued the directions on a petition filed by Baldev Singh Sarsa, a leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani) who had sought the revocation of a contract between the SGPC and a Chandigarh-based chartered accountants’ firm, Ms S.S. Kohli and Associates. The SGJC had directed the SGPC authorities on October 20 not to hire the firm at exorbitant monthly charges of Rs 3.5 lakh. Sarsa had pleaded that the contract had violated the norms and SGPC chief Avtar Singh had allegedly indulged in favouritism and nepotism.

The three-member commission bench, headed by Manmohan Singh Brar and comprising Amrik Singh Randhawa and Ajwant Singh Mann, today observed that in spite of the restrictions, the SGPC advertised in the papers to hire a firm and it was nothing but a violation of the directions, sources said.

The SGPC, it is learnt, had passed a resolution in the executive in January giving the contract to the firm and the same was challenged by Sarsa through a petition filed with the commission. The SGPC had publicised the application for tenders on November 11. “This is a clear-cut violation of the commission’s orders,”alleged Sarsa.

Prime Minister wraps up Indian visit with chaotic tour of Golden Temple

AMRITSAR, India — Prime Minister Stephen Harper wrapped up a three-day tour of India on Wednesday with a chaotic tour of the Sikh Golden Temple in Amritsar.

The prime minister's visit to the crowded, sprawling temple attracted dozens of Indian cameramen and photographers, who turned the tight perimeter around Harper into an angry roiling mosh pit. It was a far different scene earlier in the day in New Delhi when Harper toured the world's largest Hindu temple, strolling through magnificent empty boulevards.

The last Canadian prime minister to visit the Golden Temple - site of a violent clash in 1984 that ultimately led to the bombing of an Air India flight out of Vancouver a year later - was Liberal Jean Chretien in 2003.

A total of 329 people died when the jumbo jet went down in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ireland.

Harper arrives back in Canada on Thursday morning.

Trimming problem in Sikh community

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

I'm Dr. Harleen Kaur, based in New Delhi, India. I am a homoeopathic doctor by profession and a proud Amritdhari Sikh by obsession. I wish to see the Sikhs holding fast to the teachings of our Gurus in today's challenging times, so that we can prove that 'Khalsa kade dolda nahi'.

The problem of trimming (both in girls and boys) is a trouble eating us up for last so many years. It is prudent to nip this serious problem sooner than later, as it is totally against Gurmat and one who indulges in trimming is disobeying the very primary rule of being a Sikh, that of 'not tampering with your body, in any which way'. The same even applies to the girls who wax/thread/shave/pluck their body hair.

With ardas for a high-spirited Qaum,

Dr. Harleen Kaur

Prof. Darshan Singh Ragi

Sat Sri Akal,

We are expecting this CD by 25th of November & if we really get it, we will put it on public screening.

Prof. Darshan Singh Ragi : summoned to Akal Takht Sahib

Controversial Sikh preacher Darshan singh is summoned to Akal Takht Sahib

Amritsar, Punjab: Taking serious note of Prof Darshan Singh concocting a story linking Guru Gobind Singh with a prostitute while doing keertan at gurdwara in New York (USA), Akal Takhat Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh summoned Ragi Darshan to Akal Takhat on December 5th, 2009. They decided to summon him after a meeting of Five Singh Sahibans on Nov 17, 2009. Jathedar said that this is a serious issue. Documents regarding this have been obtained from USA.

Prof. Darshan Singh’s narration of a concocted story linking Guru Gobind Singh with a prostitute while doing keertan in American Gurdwara is being condemned here and abroad. Gurmat Sidhant Parcharak, Sant Samaj has already appealed to the Akal Takhat Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh to summon Darshan Singh to Akal Takhat. Darshan Singh claims that this story is in Dasam Granth.

Dr. Jodh Singh, who has translated Dasam Granth in English and Hindi, was contacted for clarification. He says that there is no mention of Guru Gobind Singh Ji in this particular story. He further said that this is just a story and not history. It is wrong to consider a story to be history and then attach it with Guru Sahib. He explained that the Dasam Granth has many stories and every story is not a true tale.
Sikh Historian Dr. Jasbir Singh Sabar says that this incident finds no mention in proven Sikh sources. He said that Bhai Sahib Sirdar Kapoor Singh had mentioned “Kissa Anoop Kaur” in detail in his book “Sachi Sakhi”. He said that Guru Gobind Singh was called by once by a prostitute to her house and she served him well. When Guru Sahib asked her for a blessing, she desired that she should have a son like Guru Sahib. Guru Sahib addressed her and said, “Mother, consider me as your son.” Sabar said that Guru Sahib never went anywhere alone. There were always five Singhs with him. He said that Darshan Singh was misleading the Sikhs.

Famous academic Dr Balwant Singh Dhillon said that this incident is listed in the tales. But the subject incident is not linked to Guru and neither is he mentioned anywhere. He also said that Prof Darshan Singh was misleading Sikhs. He said that Prof has earlier tried to mislead Sikhs on the Nitnem banis also.

Prof. Darshan Singh Ragi - Sikh clergy to listen to CD today - Nov. 16

Controversial Discourse : Sikh clergy to listen to CD today
Varinder Singh : Tribune News Service : Amritsar, November 16

Five Sikh high priests, led by Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, will listen to a CD containing the alleged blasphemous remarks uttered by the former Akal Takht Jathedar, Prof Darshan Singh, during one of his recent discourses in New York, at a meeting at Akal Takht tomorrow.

The CD was given to the Akal Takht Jathedar by “sangats” of New York in support of their complaints against Darshan Singh during the former’s visit there.
Sources said after listening to the CD, the Sikh high priests would decide whether to summon Darshan Singh at Akal Takht to clarify his position or not.
Damdami Taksal has also lodged a complaint with the high priests against Darshan Singh.

“We will decide upon any action after listening to the recording of a programme of Darshan Singh at our meeting tomorrow. We have received a number of complaints in this regard from New York and other places,” said Giani Gurbachan Singh.
However, Darshan Singh said he was ready to appear before Akal Takht whenever asked to do so and “not before any person in particular”.

“It seems that some sort of action is being contemplated against me under pressure from certain quarters. I am ready to present myself before Akal Takht. I will invite the entire panth to come there and answer all questions asked to me in their presence,” said Darshan Singh.

Sikh Youth Slate wins in Surrey, Canada

Gurdwara Guru Nanak Sikh Temple to go traditional

SURREY: The determined struggle of the youth to restore the tradition of Gurdwara Sahibs to their pristine glory and ensure that Gurdwaras accomplish the purpose for which they are built, in a remarkable show, the Sikh Youth Slate comprising eighteen dedicated, selfless and committed individuals won the Gurdwara elections early today with a decisive margin of 13,400-7,200.

Their mission is clear and focused, “We are a group of progressive-minded Sikhs, consisting of men and women, students, businessmen, entrepreneurs and professionals from fields such as law, finance and software development. We genuinely desire to work towards the betterment of the community, and share a common focus and direction, centered on unity: We are all Sikhs!”

Not to be outdone with rhetoric and whimper, they seem to have done not only their homework well from the electoral point of view but also emphasized the inclusive character of Sikhism. “It is time to stand shoulder-to-shoulder as Sikhs – whether we are amritdhari or non-amritdhari, whether we are kesdhari, or sehajdhari, whether we have been walking the Sikh path for decades or we are just taking our first baby steps” said their campaign.

And for the cynics, who may still be imputing motives to the youth, the Sikh Youth Slate had this to say, “We are prepared and dedicated to create a progressive gurdwara environment, inclusive to all Sikhs. We consider ourselves to be sevadars tasked with the responsibility of changing the gurdwara from being a place of divisive politics, to being a positive place for congregation, open to everyone!

Not stopping at the Sikhs, they have also clarified that they would be working for humanity at large and ensure that the Gurdwara becomes the fulcrum of community outreach services encompassing all Canadians and those in and around Surrey in particular.

With veteran Sikh-baiter Balwant Singh Gill and company accepting defeat, the stage is set for a new president in Bikramjit Singh Sandhar in early January next year. He was at his humblest best when he truly said, “This service is done by the grace of God, for the well-being of humanity. Thank you to all those who supported this campaign, and all those who volunteered countless hours to make this change happen. Now, the real work begins.”

White House and Sikh Community Celebrate the Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, Founder of the Sikh Faith

Washington, DC, USA: The White House and the Sikh community celebrated the 540th Gurpurab (birth anniversary) of Guru Nanak Sahib Ji by holding a celestial musical performance yesterday. The White House Office of Public Engagement organized the event which was attended by Sikh organizations and leaders of the Sikh community from around the country. In her speech, Director of Office of Public Engagement, Christina M. Tchen congratulated the Sikh community on the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, and thanked both UNITED SIKHS and SCORE for their assistance in organizing the event. Following performances by religious musicians from Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, also known as Harmandir Sahib or the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India, and Sikh Dharma International, various Sikh leaders spoke about Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, and also about the issues of the Sikh community in America.

Harpreet Singh, Legal Director, UNITED SIKHS spoke at the event, stating, “The Sikh community remembers that Guru Nanak Sahib Ji's teachings emphasized speaking forcefully against social evils and injustices. It is pertinent that Sikhs follow Guru Sahib's teaching and speak out against civil, human and religious rights violations of Sikhs and others. Sikh Americans must be pro-active in advocating for their rights and press the government to address issues of employment discrimination, bullying in schools against Sikh children, hate and bias crimes, and religious and racial profiling at airports and borders. Finally, Sikhs must work together to be able to practice their faith freely and wear all five kakaars (articles of faith), including the kirpan (religious sword), at all times, whether in the military, law enforcement, at school, or at events like this one.” We will be having meetings with high level administration officials regarding the kirpan in the weeks to come.

Harpreet Singh, Legal Director, UNITED SIKHS, congratulating the community on Guru Nanak Sahib Ji's Gurpurab, and reminding them of their duty to advocate for justice

Sikh Community Leaders with Officials from the White House Office of Public Engagement

A diverse group of Sikh organizations and individuals attended the event, including but not limited to: Sikh Dharma International, SCORE, Sikh Coalition, Gurdwara Baba Makhan Shah, Sikh Cultural Society NY, and Sikh Youth of America

Ex-City Councilman Richmond, California and Executive Board Member of the California Democratic Party, Harpreet Singh Sandhu also spoke at the event, commenting, “we greatly appreciate the recognition of this important day where millions of Sikhs around the world celebrate the founding of the Sikh faith; it was pleasure to see officials speak so highly of the Sikh community and our identity.”

Commenting on the event, Harbans Singh, a Sikh community leader from New York stated, “We appreciate the White House's outreach to the Sikh Americans and recognition of this important day for the Sikh community.”

Gurdial Singh, President of Gurdwara Ravidass of New York, stated, “President Obama has brought new hope for the equal protection of civil liberties for all Americans, and we are thankful of his support for the Sikh community.”

Again, we would to like to remind the Sikh Community that it is through overcoming our differences and working together that we will be able to overcome challenges to religious identity and our honorable way of life as prescribed by Guru Nanak Sahib Ji.

We thank all Sikh organizations and leaders for participating in this event, and extend our deepest gratitude to the White House for celebrating Guru Nanak Sahib Ji's 540th Gurpurab (birth anniversary); we especially thank Paul Monteiro, Associate Director of the Office of Public Engagement, for inviting a diverse group of organizations and individuals to the meeting.

Vote underway for control of Surrey's Guru Nanak Sikh temple

By Cheryl Chan, Vancouver Province,
November 16, 2009 12:02 AM

Thousands of Sikhs braved pouring rain and howling winds Sunday night to cast their vote in a pivotal election that will decide the leadership and direction of North America’s second largest Sikh temple.

An hour before polls closed at 8 p.m., voters were still lined up outside Princess Margaret Secondary on 72nd Avenue to elect a new 18-member board of directors for Surrey’s Guru Nanak Sikh temple on Scott Road.

“You’ve never seen anything like this before. People want change,” said Surinder Hehar who was in line for his voter card with his wife and two young boys.

Surrey RCMP cordoned off a two-block radius around the school to ensure voters weren’t intimidated.

At stake is the future direction of the 32,000-member strong temple, which has been riven by two factions — the moderates and fundamentalists — and a contentious debate over furniture in the temple dining hall that erupted into violence twelve years ago.

The moderates, who have controlled the temple for the last decade, have allowed tables and chairs in the common eating area.

It is led in this election race by businessman Harjinder Singh Cheema.

Its challenger, the Sikh Youth slate led by Bikramjit Singh Sandhar, want traditional mats on the floor, but struck a compromise by saying elderly or disabled members will have the option of eating on tables and chairs.

Despite the call to return to the traditional manner of eating in the temple, the Sikh Youth slate bills itself as a group of progressive-minded Sikhs.

It is running three female candidates and has mounted a more aggressive political-style campaign with a website, YouTube campaign videos, and a Twitter presence.

It also offered supporters free bus rides to the school.

The temple’s last president, moderate Balwant Singh Gill stepped down last month after 11 years at the helm.

Last year’s elections saw an upstart youth group headed by Amardeep Singh win by an almost 6,000-vote margin over the moderates, which ran divided slates.

The results were thrown out by B.C. Supreme Court after allegations of fraud on nomination forms.

Instead of a costly court battle, the rival factions decided to hold a second vote.

The result of the vote is not expected until after midnight.

November: The saddest month of the year

Khushwant Singh

November will go down in our history as the saddest month of the year because of what happened in November 1984. Mrs Gandhi was murdered a day earlier. And hell broke loose on Sikhs who had nothing whatsoever to do with her dastardly murder: upwards of 5,000 were slaughtered across India all the way down to Karnataka. On its heels came the Bhopal gas tragedy in which over a thousand were choked to death and thousands more maimed for life.

Have these tragedies lessons to teach? Yes, they tell us how to avoid their recurrence. First, let us take a closer look at the assassination of Mrs Gandhi. I have good reasons to believe that she was averse to deploying the army to clear the Golden Temple to rid it of Bhindranwale and his goons entrenched in the Akal Takht. She was persuaded to do so by her advisers who evidently knew very little about the Sikhs, their history and what the Golden Temple meant to them. She was assured that the operation would be over in a couple of hours as Bhindranwale would lay down arms as soon as he realised he had to face armoured tanks and aircraft. As it transpired, the battle lasted two nights and days with heavy casualties of life and sacred property. When Mrs Gandhi visited the Temple two days later, she was shocked by the sight. There were dead bodies still floating in the sacred tank and the Akal Takht was in ruins. Mark Tully has rightly described it as “The fatal miscalculation”. Mrs Gandhi herself should have known that her life was in peril.

Another aspect of the tragedy, which is rarely mentioned, is the cowardly silence maintained by leaders of the Sikh community, both Akalis and Congressmen, against the hateful utterances of Bhindranwale against Hindus and his gangsters pulling out Hindus from buses and shooting them. They were scared of losing their lives because Bhindranwale only knew one way of dealing with critics — killing them. I know because I was on his hit list for many years. This created a lot of ill-will against Sikhs and is the main reason why so few came to their help when they were attacked. It has not yet got into the skulls of Sikhs living abroad. Many gurudwaras overseas have Bhindranwale’s photographs on display and speakers refer to him as a martyr.

All that is now history. What remains is to punish those who took part in the anti-Sikh pogrom of 1984. Hundreds have been named by eye-witnesses. Barely 20 have been brought to justice. As I keep repeating ad nauseam, crimes unpunished breed criminals. You can be sure if these criminals are not brought to justice soon, many of those who suffered will take to crime.

About the Bhopal gas tragedy, all I can say is that it was caused by criminal neglect of safety measures. We continue to use sub-standard material in laying roads, building houses and factories. We pay the price for doing so.

French Bank Apologises For Refusing Entry To Turbaned Sikh

“I’m sorry... Also, please kindly accept my apology on behalf of the bank for the unpleasant feelings which could have been felt on that occasion.....the manifestly excessive and improper application of security instructions led to a situation I strongly regret.”: Valerie Manscour, BNP Head of Customer Relations.

Paris, France - A major French bank in Paris, which last month refused entry to a young Sikh customer because he wore a turban, has apologised for its “manifestly excessive and improper security instructions.”

Ranjit Singh, 22, a business entrepreneur and a Sikh customer of the BNP Paribas Bank, arrived on 8th October 2009 at the BNP branch at 168, rue de Belleville, 75019 Paris to carry out a routine inquiry of his bank account. However, he was stopped at the security door by an employee of the bank who gestured to him to remove his turban to enter the bank. Ranjit Singh explained to the employee that the turban is worn as an act of faith and that he wears it all the time. Despite his explanations, the employee called another colleague who repeated the same demand. Still blocked at the security door, Ranjit Singh repeated that he is a client and that he simply wishes to verify his account. After about twenty minutes, without success, Ranjit Singh left feeling humiliated and threatened by the bank’s discriminatory attitude.

Ranjit Singh, 22, Refused entry into BNP bank

“Ranjit Singh contacted the UNITED SIKHS and we wrote to BNP Paribas to ask for an explanation for their discriminatory conduct of refusing entry to a turbaned Sikh,” said Shingara Singh, UNITED SIKHS Director in France.

We pointed out to them that, in 2005, HALDE, the Independent High Commission for Equality and Against Discrimination, had held, in a case involving Raghbir Singh, that the Banque de France had unlawfully discriminated against him when they refused him entry for wearing a turban.

The HALDE had held: “In this case refusing the benefit of a legally-granted right on the grounds of physical appearance or affiliation or non affiliation, actual or assumed with a ethnic group, nation, “race” or specific religion, is a discrimination.” The HALDE had also recognized that the refusal of entry was disproportionate because the Sikh turban does not hinder identification.

Valerie Manscour, BNP Head of Customer Relations, wrote to UNITED SIKHS on 22nd October 2009 and said, “I’m sorry about the events that you describe. Also, please kindly accept my apology on behalf of the bank for the unpleasant feelings which could have been felt on that occasion.” She also indicated that “the manifestly excessive and improper application of security instructions led to a situation I strongly regret.” The letter may be read here. You can also read the letter in French here.

UNITED SIKHS will be writing to the BNP bank to ensure that it changes its policy, procedure and practice so that it expressly requires its security staff to allow entry to a turbaned Sikh. We will also offer to provide sensitivity training to the bank’s staff so that they are more aware of the Sikh community and its identity.

Ranjit Singh commented on the experience: "Being born and raised in France I did not understand why they treated me in this way. I never thought I would be discriminated because of my religion. This incident will always be on my mind every time I enter a public building. I continue to feel both angry and sad that I was humiliated in public.”

The dastaar (Sikh turban) is the most recognizable feature of a Sikh. It is an inextricable part of the Sikh identity and is worn by a Sikh at all times, to cover the kesh (unshorn hair), one of the five articles of faith that initiated Sikhs are required to maintain. The requirement of unshorn hair and a dastaar tied over it has been codified in the Sikh Code of Conduct (Sikh Rehat Maryada).

Sikhnet Sevadar - Gurumustuk Singh Khalsa

By Gurumustuk Singh Khalsa :

I was born on March 24th, 1975 in Los Angeles, California. from the most wonderful mother S.S. Sat Kirin Kaur Khalsa & father Govinda Singh Khalsa. My mother was raised Jewish and my father was raised in the Christian religion. They both came into contact with Sikhism after studying Kundalini Yoga & Meditation with Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogi Ji. As they spent more time with Yogi Bhajan they became more and more interested in wearing a turban and living as Sikhs. A few years later they adopted the Sikh religion and were arranged to be married. Two years later I was born. From early on, my parents instilled in me the values and practices of living as a Sikh. We would get up early in the morning, take a cold shower (which I dreaded at the time), and then get together with many of the other Sikhs in our area to recite Japji and practice Kundalini Yoga (to stretch and exercise our bodies). After the yoga we would do about an hour of meditation to various mantras from the Siri Guru Granth Sahib, followed then by Gurdwara. This started our day by giving 2-1/2 hours to the Guru......10% of our day. I studied in India for about 11 years (1983 - 1994) during which I developed many different interests and passions, including photography, computers, wood carving, electronics, basket ball, fixing and making every thinkable gadget, Kundalini yoga and meditation, singing, and understanding the mind, body and spirit.

Sikh leaders seek UN intervention in 1984 riots cases

New Delhi, Nov 11 (PTI) Leaders from a group of Sikh organisations today appealed to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to intervene immediately to bring justice to the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Leaders from Khalsa Action Committee, Dal Khalsa, Punjab Human Rights Organisation, Shiromani Panthic Council, and Shiromani Akali Dal (Panch Pardani) met UN officials at its Information Centre here to submit a memorandum, saying unless it intervened, human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration would be seriously jeopardised.

Noting that official figures put the number of Sikhs killed in 1984 in Delhi alone at 2,733, the leaders said in the memorandum that the victims' families were still waiting for justice, 25 years after the carnage.

CM advisor leads Mohali in prayers at Amb Sahib

TNN 9 November 2009, 01:16am IST

MOHALI: The Congress government at the Centre deliberately ignored the recommendations of the Nanavati Commission on action against those
Congress leaders who were directly involved in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. This was alleged by Daljit Singh Cheema, an advisor to Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Addressing a religious gathering at Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali on Sunday held to collectively pray for seeking justice for the families of the victims of the anti-Sikh riots and for peace of souls of the victims, he said that Nanavati Commission had indicted several Congress leaders for their direct involvement in the anti-Sikh riots which was most heinous crime of the world directed towards the Sikh community.

He alleged that the Centre government led by Congress not only ignored the report of the commission but the Congress also tried to reward these leaders by fielding them in elections. He said that it was most unfortunate that today when entire world was observing ‘ardas divas,’ no Congress leader had come forward for participating in this human cause which indicated that Congress leaders were in agreement for riots against the Sikh community at that time.

Cheema said that SAD has now committed itself to take this long legal battle of last 25 years to its logical conclusion and would ensure punishment for the culprits of this anti-Sikh riots. He said that party would provide all help to the members of the victims of the anti-Sikh riots to ensure that justice is done to these families.

Among others who spoke on the occasion included Kuldeep Kaur Kang, president of women wing SAD (Mohali), Amrik Singh Mohali, Kashmir Kaur besides other leaders of SAD, BJP and other communities.

Shoe-throwing scribe honoured by Sikhs in Canada

Jarnail Singh, the Sikh journalist who hurled his shoe at Home Minister P Chidambaram at a press conference to protest the injustice meted out to the victims of 1984 anti-Sikh riots, has been conferred an award by the community in Canada.

Set to release his book I Accused... on the anti-Sikh riots, Singh has been making appearances in various gatherings after being asked to resign from Dainik Jagran, the Hindi daily he worked for.

Recently, he was in Canada where he was awarded the "Lion of Delhi" award at the Spinning Wheels film festival, where films related to Sikhs are screened.

"I have been called to lots of gatherings. I led a candlelight vigil at Vancouver, on the 25th anniversary of the anti-Sikh riots. I have been speaking to many people across the country, in Indore, Ludhiana, Saharanpur and Delhi to boost the quest for justice for the victims," Singh told IANS.

Categorically denying an intention to join any political party, Singh maintains that his aim was to shame the perpetrators of the 1984 pogrom.

"My book will shame those culprits. Politically they have been punished for their crimes but there should not be any let up in the cases against them. If moral pressure increases, the cases may be taken to their logical conclusion.

"My aim is to create a positive environment for the trials. If media covers the issue, the witnesses may come forward to speak, they may get protection," Singh said.

He said the past few months have been painful, without any livelihood, and he has been going to meet the victims and witnesses of the 1984 carnage.

He says that his action of throwing a shoe at Chidambaram was wrong, but the issue was important.

Dissatisfied with Chidambaram's response over the Central Bureau of Investigation's clean chit to Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, Singh had hurled a shoe at the minister during a press conference here on April 7, 2009.

Immediately after the incident, Singh told IANS: "I just wanted to ask (Chidambaram) how he can be happy when one whole community is in deep anguish... I do not think it (what I did) is the right way but the issue (1984 Sikh riots) is right."

The incident sparked widespread protests by the Sikh community against Congress, costing Tytler and Kumar their election tickets. While Chidambaram refused to file a case against Singh, Dainik Jagran asked him to resign.

Prayers held for justice in anti-Sikh riot cases

Chandigarh, Nov 8 (PTI) Special prayers were held at a Gurudwara in Patiala for speedy delivery of justice to victims of 1984 anti-Sikhs riots.

After prayers at Gurudwara Sri Dukhniwaran Sahib, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said, "It was a matter of shame for world's biggest democracy that even after 25 years, the families of victims were not granted justice".

Later, he told reporters that Congress had not expressed regret for "inciting mob" to kill thousands of innocent Sikhs and accused CBI of scuttling the legal procedure. The agency was acting at the instance of its "political masters", he alleged.

He appealed to the Centre to re-open each case and investigate "honestly" to ensure justice to victims and survivors of the riots.

Punish those involved in 1984 Sikh riots: Human Rights Watch to Indian govt
PTI 3 November 2009, 09:23am IST

NEW YORK: An international human rights group has asked the Indian government to prosecute those involved in 1984 Sikh riots, following the
assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

"The victims of the 1984 massacres have waited for the law to take its course and, sadly, they are still waiting. The Government should prosecute those involved in the riots," Meenakshi Ganguly, senior researcher on South Asia at Human Rights Watch (HRW), said.

"Both the militants and the security forces committed horrific crimes, justifying them by pointing to the abuses of the other, and yet those who suffered most were ordinary civilians," she added.

Two decades after the incident, victims and their families seeking justice "have been confronted by government opposition and obfuscation, including prolonged trials, biased prosecutors, an unresponsive judiciary, police intimidation, and harassment of witnesses," a HRW statement noted.

It further alleged that no senior government officials or politicians have been prosecuted despite evidences of their role in the atrocities.

Numerous commissions of inquiry, each with the promise of justice, have produced no tangible results, it added.

Widespread killing of Sikhs by violent mobs were triggered after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by two of her Sikh bodyguards.

Tens of thousands of Sikhs attend community parade in Yuba City

By Ravinder Singh Robin

Yuba City (United States), Nov. 2(ANI): Tens of thousands of people from different parts of the United States of America, Canada, United Kingdom, and India attended the 30th Annual Sikh Parade here on Sunday.

The nearly five mile religious procession was taken out to mark the tercentenary celebrations of Guruship of Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhs, in Yuba City, about 125 miles from San Francisco Bay Area.

Over the last three decades, this parade has grown from a local community event to an international one. Initially, it commenced with a few hundreds of people and the parade today aims to aware people about Sikhism, their culture and customs.

Each year Sikhs travel to Yuba City from different parts of the world to partake in one of the largest devotional celebrations in the Western Hemisphere. It is estimated to generate 20 to 30 million dollars for the local economy.

Amid chants of ‘Satnam Waheguru’ and religious sloganeering of ‘Jo Bole so Nihal’ the Punj Pyaras or, the five Sikh clergies led the parade, carrying the Sri Nishan Sahib, the religious flag of Sikhism.

Also, there were flags of California State in the parade.

As the procession started off from the Sikh Temple of Yuba City, a helicopter hovering above the ceremonial parade showered a rain of flowers from high above the procession.

Thousands of Sikhs walked alongside hundreds of floats. Along the parade route, Sikh families who set up temporary stalls distributed free drinks, snacks and cooked meal for the visitors along the parade route.

Sikhs have been a part of the American landscape for over 130 years. And, the Yuba City area, which has some of the best agricultural land, is known for the largest Sikh population of farm owners.

Tajinder Singh Dosanjh, a senior member of the local committee, said that the annual parade helps people to meet each other and witness a large religious gathering and offers a platform to the Sikhs to discuss their issues.

Besides it being a religious function, the local people here opine that the procession also demonstrates their political and economic strength along with the unity among the Sikhs.

John Gill, a senior Sikh leader of Yuba city, said that by doing such events the community would move ahead to create awareness in the USA about Sikhs so there would no more hate crime against Sikhs due to mistaken identity.

Many U.S Congressmen and representatives of the Governor’s office attended the parade besides the Sikh devotees.

Wally Herger, member, Congress, on this occasion said that after 9/11 we have been facing a lot of challenges and it is important that we should not mix up out friends (Sikhs) with the radical groups of Islam.

We need continued efforts to make sure that American public is made aware about the Sikh community.

Nearly 40 floats decorated as per traditional themes, which reflected the vibrant nature of the Sikh Culture, Sikhism and of the Sikh way of life, were also one of the major attractions during the parade. (ANI)

They eat, love and pray on Guru Nanak's birthday

BANGALORE: Guru Nanak's birth anniversary marks the biggest celebrations of Gurupurab for Sikhs across the world. For devotees in Bangalore, Shri
Guru Singh Sabha (gurudwara) on Kensingston Road came alive on Monday with Sikhs offering prayers and meeting community members on this occasion.

The scores of devotees who thronged the gurdwara also included people from other communities. Guru Sabha is one of the biggest shrines in the state. For the last 15 days, early morning prayers were being offered with bhajans and free food -- langar khana -- apart from regular prayers on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Men in bright-coloured pagdis and women decked up like brides poured in throughout the day. For children and students from North India, this was a fun day and a welcome break from books, while the elderly listened to the chantings from the holy Guru Granth Sahib and bhajans sung by musicians from Amritsar. There were several such chanting sessions during the day in addition to lectures on moral behaviour, interspersed with kirtans.

Some devotees also offered shawls for the holy grave and engaged in community service. Holy books, posters of Guru Nanak, kara (swords) and kangra (bangles) were also sold outside the gurudwara.

Langar khana is a tradition where devotees are offered free food. The special delights this year were maa chole ka daal, kheer and halwa, which drew crowds from people across communities. The gurudwara offers this food for free to a good number of poor people.

The evenings were spent at community gatherings, and members had delicious meals at Punjabi restaurants across the city.

Sikhs pay obeisance at Golden Temple

Several Sikhs on Monday paid obeisance in the sanctum sanctorum of Harmandhar Sahib, popularly known as Golden Temple, in Amritsar on the occasion of birth anniversary of founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev.

Devotees queued up to pay obeisance in the sanctum sanctorum of the Golden Temple since morning and at Akal Takht (Highest Sikh Temporal Seat).

Before paying obeisance in the Golden Temple, the devotees took holy dip in the sacred tank of Temple at the marbled periphery with the belief that that holy dip would wash away their all-bad deeds of previous births.
