UK: Sikh shopkeeper stabbed to death

London, Feb 21: A shopkeeper of Indian-origin was killed after being injured in a robbery at his shop in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, police said.

63-year-old Gurmail Singh had sustained head injuries during the robbery by four teenagers at around 8.30 pm on Saturday night, Feb 20.The robbery at Cowcliffe Convenience Store was witnessed by a group of six people, who heard a commotion at the shop and went to help.

However, they were unable to prevent the gang of robbers from leaving. Detective superintendent David Pervin said, "Singh was a well-known and popular local businessman who had been in this area many years.

I appeal for anyone with information to contact us as a matter of urgency."Singh was admitted to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and he died at 3.30 am on Sunday morning, Feb 21.A post-mortem will be held on Monday, Feb 22, to confirm the cause of the death, the police said.

Taliban kill 2 Sikhs, send heads to Pak gurdwara

PESHAWAR/NEW DELHI: The Taliban has reportedly beheaded two Sikhs in Pakistan's lawless tribal region bordering Afghanistan and sent the heads to a gurdwara.

Jaspal Singh and Mahan Singh, both businessmen, were kidnapped from Tira Valley, in Khyber agency, and Darra Adamkheil, in Orakzai agency, on January 19 and held for ransom. Sources in the area told TOI on Sunday that they were killed because they were paying `protection' money to a rival faction.

However, according to security sources in New Delhi, Jaspal and Mahan were reportedly told to convert to Islam or face death. When they refused, their heads were chopped off and sent to the Bhai Joga Singh gurdwara in Peshawar.

The Indian government has taken serious note of this and is in touch with the high commission in Islamabad. "This incident is shocking. We are looking into it," a source said.

The miniscule Sikh community in NWFP and Afghanistan has been under pressure from the Taliban to embrace Islam, official sources said. The Taliban, during their reign in Afghanistan, had imposed jiziya -- a religious tax -- on all minorities, mostly Hindus and Sikhs. They were made to wear a piece of yellow cloth on their breast pocket to identify themselves.

Two arrested with explosives, weapons in Punjab

PATIALA (Punjab): Two men were arrested on Sunday from this Punjab town for possessing explosives and weapons, police said. Both the arrested men belonged to the Khalistan Liberation Front (KLF), a terrorist organisation that was active in the state during years of Sikh militancy from 1982 to 1995, a police official said.

The police recovered nearly 8 kg of explosives and 40 gelatin sticks from their possession. Two pistols and some ammunition were also recovered from them, the official said. "They were planning for a major strike in the state. Further investigations are on," a police official said in Patiala, about 70 km from state capital Chandigarh.

The Punjab police have in the last two months recovered explosives from two places in Patiala district. Explosive material was recovered outside an Indian Oil Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) refilling plant near Nabha town, 25 km from here, last month. Just five days later, two grenades were found by the police on a road leading to an Indian Air Force (IAF) station at Zirakpur, 20 km from Chandigarh.

Government open to Sikh rebels' return: Chidambaram

India Friday said that it will look into the demands for facilitating return of 'misguided' Sikhs who went abroad and want to return to the country after denouncing their demand for Khalistan.

'I know the demand has been made and I will look into the matter. If misguided Sikh youths who have gone abroad want to come back after denouncing their demand for Khalistan, certainly we have to find the way to rehabilitate them,' Home Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters here.

He said the government has shown readiness to facilitate the return of Kashmiri youths from Pakistan administered Kashmir (PoK).

'Anyone who crossed over to PoK tries to infiltrate to India via Bangladesh or via Nepal on false paper. That's an unsound approach,' he said.

'And the correct ... if you denounce militancy and if you want to come over, you will be subject to identification, screening, facilitating legal travel to this part of Jammu and Kashmir, debriefing, rehabilitation and last step will be to integrating with the community,' he added.

Chidambaram said the trend is not new and it has been the practice for the last several years.

'In 1997-98, the Central Reserve Police Force raised a battalion of surrendered militants, the Border Security Force recruited 450 surrendered militants and in northeast even today, surrendered militants are being recruited,' he said.

The home minister said in Maoist-affected states, surrendered rebels were being welcomed to come and join the mainstream.

Badal demands general amnesty for Sikh youths

Kapurthala, Feb 18 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today slammed the Centre for leaving Sikh youths who took political asylum abroad during the days of militancy out of the ambit of its proposed move to grant general amnesty to PoK-based Kashmiri youths who give up arms and return.

"When the country is one, what is the harm in giving general amnesty to Sikh youths who want to shun violence and join the mainstream," Badal told reporters here on the sidelines of a function.

Chidambaram no to return of Sikhs from PoK fuels anger in Punjab

CHANDIGARH/VALTOHA: Union home minister P Chidambram’s categorical no to including Sikhs in the ‘welcome-back’ call extended to Kashmiri youth who had gone over to PoK, has come as a rude shock for Punjab, where people are slamming the government’s stand as ‘‘discriminatory and unjust’’.

Soon after PC’s offer to PoK youths, the Jathedar of Akal Takht, in an exclusive interview with the TOI, had asked the minister to make the same offer to Sikh youths on February 13. On Thursday, Chidambram’s party colleague and former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh said he ‘‘did not agree with the (PC’s) decision’’.

‘‘There has to be some logic to it. When we are extending this offer to those who are still resorting to violence (in J&K), then why can’t we call back those who have shunned arms years ago and returned to the mainstream,’’ said Amarinder, who had, during his chief minister’s tenure, carried back a list of 50-odd such youths from Canada for having their names cleared from the High Commission, after taking clearance from Indian authorities. He also took up the matter with External Affairs ministry later.

BJP MP from Amritsar, Navjot Sidhu called the decision ‘‘a shocking violation of Indian constitution where Union government was indulging in discrimination on the basis of caste, colour and creed. Anybody, who violates the constitution should be made to face action,’’ Sidhu told The Times of India on phone from Indore.
