                                    200-year-old gurdwara in Quetta,Balochistan

Quetta, July 23 (IANS) The government in Pakistan’s Balochistan province has handed over a 200-year-old gurdwara to the Sikh community after a period of 73 years.Around 2,000 Sikh families live in Balochistan.

The Siri Guru Singh Gurdwara located on Masjid Road in the centre of the city has been used as APWA Government High Girls School since 1947, said the Dawn news report.
“Restoring gurdwara as a place of worship for the Sikh community is a historical decision of the Balochistan government,” Denesh Kumar, provincial parliamentary secretary and Adviser to the Chief Minister on Minority Affairs, said on Wednesday.
The students who were studying in APWA Government Girls High School have been asked to seek admission to nearby schools.
Sardar Jasbeer Singh, chairman of the Sikh Community Committee in Balochistan, welcomed the move and described it as a “gift from the Balochistan government to the Sikh Community living in the province”.
“The Sikh community of the province is very pleased that our ancient gurdwara has been handed over to us by the government of Pakistan and the Balochistan High Court after 73 years and now we are able to continue our religious practice there,” Dawn news quoted Singh as saying.

"We Are All Gurmit Kaur" Compaign:Thousands sign petition calling for elderly Sikh woman to be allowed to stay in the UK

Community campaigners are rallying behind an elderly Sikh woman from Smethwick who is being threatened with deportation, despite living in the country for over ten years.
Outraged friends and neighbours of 75-year-old Gurmit Kaur have jumped to her defense after menacing letters threatening to “secure her removal” were sent to the senior citizen by the government immigration services.
Gurmit Kaur holds up a sign sign saying "We are all Gurmit Kaur"

75-year-old Gurmit Kaur is being threatened with deportation due to the Government’s ‘Hostile Environment’ policy.
Gurmit Kaur Sahota, who has been living in Sandwell for over ten years but with no immigration papers, is a much-loved figure in her community and regularly volunteers at her local Sikh temple providing food for others

Yet, in spite of her commitment to her community and home, UK Border Agency contractor Capita has written to Ms Kaur demanding she either leaves or be arrested and deported.
Legally an undocumented migrant, UK Visas and Immigration representatives have told Kaur to go back to India even though she has no family there.
Activists say Kaur is a victim of the government’s ‘hostile   environment’ policy.
Gurmit Kaur came to the UK in 2009 and Smethwick has been home to her ever since. She has no family to turn to in the UK and no family to return to in Panjab, So the local Sikh Community of Smethwick have adopted her.

Gurmit is a very kind woman, even though she has nothing she is still generous and will always give what she can, when she can. Most of her days are spent volunteering at the local Gurdwara.
At a local Black Lives Matter protest Gurmit was giving out fruit to protesters in solidarity with the cause. Gurmit is an asset and a kind auntie to Smethwick. Commuinity want her to stay here.

Downpour Floods Heritage Street in Amritsar

Tall claims made by the Municipal Corporation about desilting of drains have fallen flat after heavy rain lashed the city on Sunday morning.
Various places, including low-lying areas, walled city and outer ring road, were waterlogged.
Several sewer lines remained choked, leading to accumulation of rainwater on the BRTS track, elevated road near Mall of Amritsar, Taylor Road, Madan Mohan Malviya Road, Batala Road outside Celebration Mall, Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Majitha Road, SSSS Chowk and Fatehgarh Churian Road.
Incessant rain throws life out of gear in Amritsar, Tarn Taran ...
Roads leading to many tourist places, including Partition Museum and Heritage Street, were also waterlogged. Besides, the rainfall also brought forth the true picture hidden behind the glitter of the Rs250-crore Golden Temple Heritage Street project.
Just before the monsoon season, Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu and senior MC officials had claimed that they were prepared and equipped to tackle the problem of water-logging in the city. They had claimed that the work of desilting of drains was done. People residing in low-lying areas flayed the authorities for poor arrangements to deal with water-logging.
It is tough for people to commute safely on city roads. The water-logging problem can be seen on every road.
Most of the city areas are deprived of a storm-water drainage system. The city is dependent on sanitary sewer. It takes time to drain out rainwater. The authorities have covered all open drains, leading to a flood-like situation after a spell of rain.

SGPC Feels ‘Helpless’ :At Golden Temple, Devotees, sewadars Flout Mask Guideline

Instructions to wearing masks are not being followed in spirit.
As long queues and hustle bustle returns to the Golden Temple, the authorities are in a fix on how to make the pilgrims at Golden Temple to wear masks, a critical protection that can go a long way in breaking the COVID-19 chain.

Currently both the pilgrims and even those performing sewa at the Golden Temple could be seen moving around without masks. While The Punjab government  had made wearing face masks for people mandatory in public, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) is caught between duty and devotion over imposing the Covid-19 protocol inside the gurdwara premises in Amritsar. The district is in the top three with most Covid cases.

“We gave clear instructions to the devotees to wear the mask. Our sewadar, standing inside the premises of Golden Temple, repeatedly keep telling the devotees to put on masks and follow all other Covid-19 protocol. We can only advise not force the devotees to wear masks,” said SGPC secretary Mahinder Singh Ahali.

Incidentally, even sewadars are seen moving around without masks. Ahali, however, blamed it on the nature of work. “Our employees follow the instructions. But there may be some jobs where they may have to remove mask. Otherwise no employee is supposed to remove it,” said Ahali.

“When devotees are inside the Golden Temple premises, you cannot force them to do something that is not related to devotion. We can only make requests. For most devotees, it is a matter of faith and they believe that they cannot get infected inside the Golden Temple. It is here that they want to believe more in God and their faith than the instructions,” said Ahali, adding that it is the SGPC that will be blamed if the sewadars enter into arguments with devotees over the mask issue. “The devotees know what is best for them.”
