leadership qualities”, she said.
She is very fond
of reading online stories related to politics and used to follow Sushma Swaraj,

Melbourne School Amends Uniform Guidelines to Allow its Sikh Students to Wear a Head Covering in Accordance With Their Religious Ethos.
Harsanjog Singh (R) with his parents and sister
It all began four months ago
with a campaign started by a handful of Sikh families associated with Good News
Lutheran College in Melbourne’s western suburb of Tarneit.
It has culminated with this Christian denominational school
accepting and implementing a request made by Sikh families to allow their
children to wear a patka (headwear worn
usually by young Sikh boys) or a turban as part of the school uniform.
School
principal Fiona McAullife, considered instrumental in this change. She
said “through diversity we can express the totality of God’s human
creation and be blessed with an assortment of perspectives and gifts.”
“Not long after I arrived at Good News Lutheran College at the
start of this year, it was brought to my attention that this was a problem.
After some research, I discovered that this had been a problem for a number of
years and that our uniform guidelines did not mention headwear. It seemed that
there was an ‘understanding’ rather than a direct instruction that the patka was
not part of the uniform,” says the school principal.
“I was surprised by this understanding as it is not in line with
our Lutheran beliefs around inclusivity. It was discussed at an Executive
Leadership meeting with all members in agreement that we should include a
statement: ‘Hair accessories or religious/cultural headwear (e.g. turbans, patkas)
are allowed in College colours (navy, teal, white and black) with no other
decoration’,” Ms McAuliffe adds.
Ms
McAuliffe says that all 44 of her school’s Sikh boys will have the freedom to
wear a patka or
a turban in school colours.
“I’m feeling very proud now that I can wear my patka.
I’ll tell my friends from other cultures that this is the Sikh culture, that
all religions are one,” says the 10-year-old .
His
mother says she was optimistic about a positive outcome because she has
"seen Australia change" during the past 10 years that the family has
been living here.

Coronavirus in India: Sikh Gurdwaras in Delhi Save Millions From Hunger
As Indian authorities
struggle to contain COVID-19, Delhi's Sikh community has come together to feed
millions of people with food cooked every day at gurdwaras.
There are nearly 21 million
Sikhs in India, making Sikhism the fourth-largest religion in the country. A
pillar of Sikhism is "sewa" or service. Sikh temples, called
"gurdwaras," offer free food to millions of people across the world.
.
Coronavirus restrictions in
place Delhi's gurdwaras were closed to the public at the end of March when
India went into lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Even with no
devotees, gurdwara staff continued daily prayers and provided services to
Delhi's needy. Last month, religious places reopened across India. As the
public returned, preventive measures like temperature checks, hand sanitizers,
and masks were implemented.
.
Sikh community kitchens
According to Sikh philosophy, the faithful should not go home empty-handed. A visit
to the gurdwara offers three things — lessons from Sikh gurus,
"parshad" pastry made from whole-wheat flour, and a meal from the
community kitchen.
Thousands of meals prepared
daily The kitchens open every day at 3a.m. to prepare meals for nearly 100,000
people. Men and women get together to cook dal (lentils), roti (Indian
flatbread) and rice. Funding is provided by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management
Committee (DSGMC) and donations from Sikh devotees.
Over 20 locations served The
food is then loaded onto trucks and pick-up vans to be delivered across Delhi
and neighboring cities like Noida and Ghaziabad. Localities are chosen on the
basis of need, usually after other forms of aid have not been delivered.
Government officials and local NGOs also request thousands of meals.
Food for the needy For
Sikhs, helping someone in need is considered the highest virtue. Even before
the truck pulls in, people stand in long lines and wait for their daily meal.
Many people are in need: young men and women, street children, people with
disabilities, and the elderly. Some families with no source of income,
especially because of COVID-19, also receive rations that could last them week.
A well-organized process Two
separate queues are formed — one for able-bodied men and another for women, the
elderly and those with disabilities. The process of getting food is well
organized, but in a country with over 1.3 billion people, physical distancing
norms are hard to follow.
Long lines in the sun For
many standing in the line, this is the only meal they will eat all day. Some
even carry small packets to bring food for friends and family members who could
not make it to the gurdwara's truck. For them, the langar has reached places
even the government and aid organizations could not.

In Amritsar, Covid Claims Every 20th Patient
As of July 11 evening,
Punjab had recorded 195 Covid fatalities while the total number of patients in
the state was 7589. It converts into a case fatality rate (CFR) of 2.56 per cent
Nearly
every fortieth Covid patient in Punjab has succumbed to the infection. The
figure is scarier for Amritsar, where every twentieth patient died due to Covid-19 and
related complications. The numbers have forced a rethink in the Punjab government
which has now directed all its district heads to increase the efforts to save
more and more lives.
A health employee takes swab samples of a women at the Civil Hospital in Amritsar
As of July 11 evening, Punjab
had recorded 195 Covid fatalities while the total number of patients in the
state was 7589. It converts into a case fatality rate (CFR) of 2.56 per cent.
Among the districts, Amritsar with 51 deaths out of total 1040 cases detected
tops the list with 4.9 per cent CFR, followed by Kapurthala with 4.7 per cent
CFR (6 deaths, 126 cases).
Information
secured from different sources reveal that in case of 40 deaths reported from
private hospitals in the past few days, patient died in less than five days of
his or her admission to the health care facility — in many cases on the day of
admission. “Patients report to hospitals for kidney, heart or sugar related
ailments, but during treatment they are tested positive and die of
co-morbidities,” said Bhaskar.
One of the reasons behind
Amritsar reporting most deaths is that the Government Medical College in the
district acts as a referral centre for patients from other districts. The GMC has a tertiary care facility available too.

Fighting With Corona: Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh Calling for a Collective Fight By One and All Against “The Biggest Danger Facing Humanity.”
Chief
Minister Captain Amarinder Singh Appeals To Political Parties To Avoid
Gatherings To Save Lives As `Politics Can Wait’
Amid
the spiraling Covid cases, the Punjab Government is all set to impose some more
stringent curbs in the state, including further restrictions on social, public
and family gatherings, as well as mandatory wearing of masks even while
working.
Announcing
this during his AskCaptain Facebook live session today, Chief Minister Captain
Amarinder Singh said strictness was necessary to check the spread of the
Coronavirus as he did not want Punjab to go the way of Mumbai, Delhi or Tamil
Nadu. Asked why the state government was not going for weekend lockdowns to
contain the spread, he said Sunday lockdowns were already in place and the
government was keeping a close watch on the situation and will do whatever
necessary.
Underlining
the need for everyone to behave responsibly in the current crisis, Captain
Amarinder exhorted the people to adhere to all curbs, even as appealed to all
political parties to avoid any kind of gathering to save the lives of Punjabis.
“It is our joint responsibility to save Punjab. Politics can wait,” he
stressed, calling for a collective fight by one and all against “the biggest
danger facing humanity.”
