‘Self Protection is Best Protection’ Campaign :Amritsar Judiciary for Mass Awareness Against Spread of Covid-19
‘Self Protection is Best Protection’ campaign
AMRITSAR: To break the chain of spread of coronavirus,
the judiciary in Amritsar has launched the ‘Self Protection is Best Protection’
campaign to bring awareness among the general public about the pathogen and to
contain its spread.
Chief judicial magistrate Sunil Makkar informed
media persons on Tuesday that in the hour of outbreak of unprecedented pandemic
(covid 19), it was necessary to observe all the precautionary measures as
recommended by the health department of government.
Makkar who is also secretary of District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) said that District and Session Judge cum chairman DLS Balwinder Singh Sandhu in collaboration with Sewa Sankalp Society launched the slogan ‘Self Protection is Best Protection’ to spread mass awareness regarding Covid-19.

267 Missing Saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. :Ludhiana Based MLA cum SGPC Member Balwinder Singh Bains Lodged Complaint Against SGPC
On July 6, Ludhiana
based MLA cum SGPC member Balwinder Singh Bains lodged a complaint to the
Amritsar Police Commissioner demanding investigation into the missing saroops
of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
Interacting with media
after lodging complaint, Balwinder Singh Bains said that the then SGPC’s
executive committee didn’t hold any remorse prayer while cremating the damaged
saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib at Goindwal Sahib in May-2016. “The actual number
of damaged saroops was also kept hidden deliberately by the SGPC,” he added. It
is pertinent to note here that 267 saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji have
been found missing from the SGPC’s publication department.
The incident came to
fore when assistant supervisor Kanwaljit Singh got retired in May this year.
Kanwaljit Singh has claimed that he was forced to issue holy saroops of Sri
Guru Granth Sahib Ji without making entries in the record books.
He has also
claimed that more than 80 holy saroops got burnt in fire incident occurred at
Gurdwara Ramsar Sahib in May-2016 while the SGPC disclosed damage of only 14.
However, the SGPC is accusing Kanwaljit Singh of negligence in his duties, but
the SGPC’s accusation comes under suspicion because the latter is ready to let
go Kanwaljit Singh just by recovering the cost of missing saroops.
Last month,
Amritsar Police Commissioner Sukhchain Singh Gill had marked an enquiry into
this incident to the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

(FAI) welcomed the start of Qatar Airways thrice-weekly Fights to Toronto from
their hub at Hamad International Airport in Doha on July 4, 2020 . In a press release
from Canada, FlyAmritsar North America Convener, Anantdeep Singh Dhillon
informed Sikh24 that amidst the lockdown and suspension of international Fight
by India, there is some good news for the Punjabi diaspora in Canada.
“After the resumption
of international fights, the launch of this direct Fight will provide seamless
one-stop connectivity between Amritsar-Toronto via Doha,” he said.
Dhillon said, “Qatar
Airways has been operating daily direct Fights between Doha & Amritsar
providing one-stop short transit connections via Doha to about nine North
American destinations including four weekly Fights to Montreal, Canada.
The timings of this newly introduced Fight between Doha-Toronto also enables a
short transit time of about 3 hours 45 min through Doha.
A large concentration
of Punjabi diaspora lives in and around Toronto and Vancouver in Canada but due
to the non-availability of direct Fights to these cities from Amritsar, people
were forced to travel through Delhi. With the introduction of this new route by
Qatar Airways, Amritsar will now have seven-weekly Fights to Canada via Doha.”
Sikh Volunteers Serve 400 Families in Fremont (California) on American Independance Day July 4 Weekend : City Mayor Lily Mei Appreciated The Efforts By The Sikh Volunteers.
FREMONT, CA,
USA—Although this year’s annual 4th of July parade was canceled in Fremont due
to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, Sikhs however continued to take part and
give back to the Fremont community like they have been doing for the past
several years.
Typically, members of
the Sikh community take part in the annual parade by distributing free food and
water. This year, due to the lockdown, members of the Sikh community organized
a drive through food-drive instead. The food drive was organized by volunteers
from Fremont Gurdwara and Sikhs for
Humanity in collaboration with the City of Fremont.
The event took place on
July 4 as Sikh volunteers served food, groceries and other essentials. Sikh
volunteers distributed groceries, produce, and pandemic essentials to over 400
needy families with all necessary precautions for volunteers. Fremont City Mayor
Lily Mei appreciated the efforts by the
Sikh volunteers.

Mayor Posted the following
statement about the event –
“While this year many
were not able to celebrate the holidays together traditionally in our annual
parade. I wanted to share sincere appreciation to our community volunteers for
helping July 4th in serving over 400 needy families by distributing groceries,
fresh produce, PPE essentials (face masks, hand sanitizers), and serving up hot
meals and ice cream throughout the morning and afternoon. This service was with
the support from Sikhs for Humanity and Gurdwara Fremont.
She added, “The Sikh community has come out in
support of our neighbors and friends. This year, with all the needs we have in
our community, they are distributing fresh food, groceries, face covering,
masks as well as hand sanitizers. We are so blessed that they are here
continuously to help us and all of our neighbors.”
One of the volunteers,
Rajinder Singh said, “American Independence Day was celebrated in a unique way,
this time by distributing vegetables, fresh food, and other supplies, etc. From
the last three-four days, over 40 volunteers have been continuously working hard
while packaging dry goods.” “There was a big need for this initiative. Cars
have been lined up since early morning to pick up food.
Today, people are
afraid of going to the stores to buy essentials and we are humbled to provide
this service to those in need,” Rajinder Singh added. He appreciated the efforts
by the Police Chief, the City Mayor, and others who provided assistance.
Sikh Bodies Demand Fresh DGPC Elections, Audit Of All DGPCs in Jammu & Kashmir
JAMMU, July 6: Various Sikh Bodies including, Sikh Welfare
Front J&K, All India Sikh Students Federation J&K and Sikh Youths Front
J&K have demanded fresh elections of District Gurdwara Parbandhak
Committees (DGPCs) in J&K after the expiry of 5 years term of existing DGPs
in July 2020.
Avtar Singh Khalsa, Chairman Sikh Welfare Front and Member
DGPC Jammu while addressing a joint press conference with senior Sikh leaders
of these organization here today, said that after the expiry of existing term
of DGPCs the J&K the administration should either conduct fresh elections
for District Gurdwara Parbandhak committees or the existing committees should
be given extension till fresh elections are held.
He said certain opportunistic and selfish elements are
misguiding the concerned administration for installing their own puppets from
back door entry, without the consent of the Sikh community in J&K and said
any such undemocratic step will further increase the resentment and alienation
among the community which has been recently totally neglected in the selection
of Public Service Commission (PSC) members.
In another important declaration Sikh bodies have demanded immediate audit of all District Gurdwara Parbandhak Committees for the sake of accountability and transparency.
Khalsa and other Sikh leaders informed that from time to time Sikh bodies and Sikh leaders from entire J&K have given written suggestion for amendments in J&K Gurdwara Act 1973, for the sake of clarity of Powers of Gurdwara Board & DGPCs. But unfortunately our all such genuine concerns have not been addressed till date, adding that in this context we demand that J&K UT administration should immediately appoint a joint committee of legal experts and Sikh representatives for looking into the necessary amendments in J&K Gurdwara Act 1973.
