Sikkim's Historic Gurudwara Gurudongmar Sahib

Pavitar Singh :Always Do Your Part in Vocalizing Discrimination To Bring About Change in Society

Update :

The manager of the agency called me up and discussed the matter in detail. She apologized and acknowledged that her colleague's actions were uncalled for and the whole situation on her end could have been handled better. I had a heartfelt conversation with the manager for her to understand the gravity of the matter.

The agent has since issued an official apology to me with the manager and director in the loop and the company has also accepted my offer to have a scheduled online session to learn about Sikhism, the significance of the turban and every individual's right to practice our religion in workplaces according to the constitution of Singapore regardless of race, language and religion.
                      Pavitar Singh
I have also offered a free of charge training session to the agency on how they can better approach prospective clients and candidates whilst being sensitive to one's religious practices and background. They are going to schedule it with me soon.

I still stand by my decision to not reveal names because smear campaigning is never a solution and it destroys lives. As seen in this letter of apology, the agent is a mother of 2 kids and I am unknown to her personal situation. Had I revealed names, her job could be on the line thus affecting the stability of her family.

There has been a lot of talk about how her name and the agency's name should be released to name and shame them. However, it is unlike me to shame someone, goes against my morals and the very teachings of my religion.

The whole point of sharing my experience was to highlight the prevalent decimation in our country and the importance of combating it effectively.

By taking the high road of educating, I have very successfully created a rapport with the agency to be educated on my faith and its practices so as to prevent such incidents in the future.

My methods may not be agreeable to many but this is the method I choose to adopt and I see more benefit in it than destroying someone's life and livelihood.

I am glad this matter has been handled amicably and appropriately and I urge everyone to always do their part in vocalizing discrimination and in their personal capacities, bring about change.

I am grateful to all the outpouring of support I have received.

Thank you.

Pavitar Singh :'Cloth Thingy on Your head': Sikh Man's Discriminatory Experience Applying For Job Goes Viral

Today (July 21) Marks Racial Harmony Day
Pavitar Singh, who lives in Singapore applied to a certain organization for business needs which entails a certain level of face to face interaction. He shared a recent experience while applying for a job in “a certain organisation for business needs

Received a phone call this morning to be told that I fit the bill but was explicitly told this;

"Sorry ah sir, I see your name ends with Singh. So you have the cloth thingy on your head ah? Is it removable or do you always wear it?"

I replied: Yes, I am a Singh. It is called a turban and no it is not removable. Is there an issue?

Lady on the phone: The thing is I'm not sure if the organisers will be comfortable with it.

Me: You do know that the constitution allows me to work and live as a Singaporean whilst having my turban on right? Mind you, I was in the Airforce. A place not many can be in due to clearance issues.

Lady: Oh! You were in the Airforce?! A bit surprising!

Me: Thank you for your time. I will lodge an official report for the authorities to look into this matter.

Lady starts apologizing profusley and I simply cut the call.
                                      Pavitar Singh

Not the first time this has happened and it is a bit apalling that as a citizen of this country I am being told I can't conduct myself with my turban on.
Will definitely be viewing my options and will escalate this matter to ensure no other individual becomes a victim of such discrimination.

BJP CM Biplab Deb Calls Jats, Sardars 'Low Minded', Clarifies Later; Congress Demands Apology

Tripura CM Biplab Deb has once again triggered a controversy withhis remarks on Haryana's Jat community and Punjab's Sardars (Sikhs) that theyare "low minded" compared to the Bengalis. A video of the TripuraCM's speech at an Agartala Press Club event has gone viral on social media with the Opposition party demanding action against him for "insulting Sikhs andJats".
"If we talk about the people of Punjab, we say, he's a Punjabi, a Sardar. The Sardar isn't afraid ofanyone. They are very strong but have less brains. One can't win them over with strength but with love and affection. Let me tell you about the Jats of Haryana. So how do people talk about Jats they say Jats are less intelligent
but are very physically healthy. If you challenge a Jat, he will bring his gun out of his house," said Biplab Deb.
"For Bengal or Bengalis, it is said that one shouldn't challenge them with regards to intelligence. Bengalis are known as very intelligent and it is their identity in India every community is known with a
certain type and character," he said further.
Congress Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala, who himself hails from Haryana, took offense and termed Deb's remarks "a BJP mindset". He asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi,Haryana CM Manoharlal Khattar and BJP President JP Nadda to break their silence and apologise for their leader's remark.

The Tripura CM later clarified his remarks and said that he had mentioned the views of some people about Punjabis and Jats.
"In an event organized at Agartala Press Club, I had mentioned the views of some people about my Punjabi and Jat brothers. My impression was not to hurt any society. I am proud of both Punjabi and Jat communities. I myself have lived among them for a long time," he said.
