Sd. Bhupinder singh Kohli ji - now a member of the blog SikhsIndia

We are pleased to announce that Sd. Bhupinder singh Kohli ji has given his valuable consent to be a CONTRIBUTOR ( Team member ) of the blog SikhsIndia.

Working for the poor, the downtrodden the needy and the helpless is more than just a hobby for Sd. BHUPINDER SINGH KOHLI from Nerul. It is a daily ritual. Apart from his busy schedule as an employee of the State Bank of India at CBD Belapur , Mr. Kohli is immersed in social work and constantly attempts to find solutions to the problems of the helpless in his own unique ways.

Kohli’s jis latest idea has been to convert his own Santro Car to a vehicle for people in distress. Explains Kohli, “Four months back, I happened to see an accident nearUran Phata at around 7 pm. The victim was fatally wounded but he could reach the hospital only after precious time had lapsed, for want of timely ambulance services. This incident made me think of alternative sources to help people in distress. And that very night, I realised that I had one of these sources with me. I could help with my new car which I’d been using sparingly. I decided to use the car in emergencies for shifting patients from or to hospitals, free of cost. “ The very next day, Kohli ji sprung into action and inscribed ‘FREE HOSPITAL SERVICE WITHIN NAVI MUMBAI DURING THE NIGHT’ on his car. During the next three months, he helped seven patients to reach the hospital during medical emergencies.

As appreciation for his dedication, the local Gurudwara presented Kohli ji with a second hand ambulance.. Though my car would serve the purpose of dropping patient to the hospital, proper medical equipment is not available inside the car. Now, with the ambulance service available, I’m sure more lives will be saved. This ambulance service too comes at no cost,” he reveals. This devout Sikh has done seven first aid courses in various hospitals across Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

Says Kohli ji, “When I was studying, I happened to see many rich patients dumping expensive medicines, which were not past their expiry date, after they recovered from their illness. These medicines would have otherwise served poor patients.” From then on, Kohli started collecting unused and un-expired medicines as well as free samples given by doctors. The medicines collected thus were sent to charitable dispensaries.

Kohli ji also collects used equipments like walking sticks, saline stands and oxygen cylinders, among others, sterilises them, and gives them to poor patients. He also collects old and usable clothes, utensils, reading materials and toys for needy people in villages. The jewel in the crown of Kohli’s social work is his mammoth compilation of a computerised Blood Group Directory that has a list of around 4,800 donors’ names and addresses, collected individually. This social worker, who is responsible for organising many medical camps, is also a member of Civil Defence, Red Cross Society and Traffic Wardens.

Pleased to inform that through our blog Sd. Bhupinder Singh Kohli ji, is on Sikhnet News :www.sikhnet.com/news/sd-bhupinder-singh-kohli-messiah-needy-and-helpless#comment-9987

Taliban kill 2 Sikhs, send heads to Pak gurdwara

PESHAWAR/NEW DELHI: The Taliban has reportedly beheaded two Sikhs in Pakistan's lawless tribal region bordering Afghanistan and sent the heads to a gurdwara.

Jaspal Singh and Mahan Singh, both businessmen, were kidnapped from Tira Valley, in Khyber agency, and Darra Adamkheil, in Orakzai agency, on January 19 and held for ransom. Sources in the area told TOI on Sunday that they were killed because they were paying `protection' money to a rival faction.

However, according to security sources in New Delhi, Jaspal and Mahan were reportedly told to convert to Islam or face death. When they refused, their heads were chopped off and sent to the Bhai Joga Singh gurdwara in Peshawar.

The Indian government has taken serious note of this and is in touch with the high commission in Islamabad. "This incident is shocking. We are looking into it," a source said.

The miniscule Sikh community in NWFP and Afghanistan has been under pressure from the Taliban to embrace Islam, official sources said. The Taliban, during their reign in Afghanistan, had imposed jiziya -- a religious tax -- on all minorities, mostly Hindus and Sikhs. They were made to wear a piece of yellow cloth on their breast pocket to identify themselves.

Two arrested with explosives, weapons in Punjab

PATIALA (Punjab): Two men were arrested on Sunday from this Punjab town for possessing explosives and weapons, police said. Both the arrested men belonged to the Khalistan Liberation Front (KLF), a terrorist organisation that was active in the state during years of Sikh militancy from 1982 to 1995, a police official said.

The police recovered nearly 8 kg of explosives and 40 gelatin sticks from their possession. Two pistols and some ammunition were also recovered from them, the official said. "They were planning for a major strike in the state. Further investigations are on," a police official said in Patiala, about 70 km from state capital Chandigarh.

The Punjab police have in the last two months recovered explosives from two places in Patiala district. Explosive material was recovered outside an Indian Oil Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) refilling plant near Nabha town, 25 km from here, last month. Just five days later, two grenades were found by the police on a road leading to an Indian Air Force (IAF) station at Zirakpur, 20 km from Chandigarh.
