Teenage girl arrested over violent attack on 80-year-old

A TEENAGE girl has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an 80-year-old man – leaving him with a bloodied nose and black eye – in a nasty Coventry city centre attack.

The 19-year-old was arrested at around 6.30pm today (August 16) after police traced her to an address in Gloucester.

She will be taken to a West Midlands Police station where she will be questioned about the attack in Trinity Street, Coventry, on Saturday evening (August 10) when the elderly victim was punched in the face and shoved to the ground.

A video of the attack – recorded by a passer-by on their mobile phone – had been circulated widely on social media throughout today and met with a wave of revulsion from viewers.

Coventry Police Chief Superintendent Andy Nicholson, said: “This was a despicable, violent attack on an elderly man in broad daylight. The victim is an 80-year-old man – he was left with a bloodied nose and a black eye.

“A video showing the assault spread rapidly on social media and quite rightly the offender’s actions are being condemned by everyone who’s viewed it.”

The attack, which appears unprovoked, happened at around 8.30pm on Saturday evening near Sainsbury’s in Coventry’s Trinity Street.

Police are still keen to hear from people who witnessed the incident and moments leading up to the attack – and have urged anyone who shared the video or still images of the assault to remove them from social media accounts as they could hinder the enquiry.

Shocking moment girl kicks elderly Asian man, 80, to the ground causing his turban to fall off before spitting in his face

This is the shocking moment a girl kicked and punched an 80-year-old Sikh to the ground in broad daylight before spitting in his face.

Police are hunting for the unidentified thug, who knocked off the pensioner's turban and left him sprawled on the pavement.

Her sickening and unprovoked attack was captured on video and shared on Facebook.

Police are treating the attack as serious malicious wounding - punishable with up to five years in prison.

The footage shows a girl knocking an elderly man to the floor near Trinity Street in Coventry city centre on 10 August at 8.30pm.

She was flanked by three men as she continued hurling abuse and spitting on the man.

The only person to help, by picking up the victim's turban, approached as the thugs walked away.

Detectives have urged witnesses to come forward to help catch the girl.

Communities clash, 31 injured

NEW DELHI: A clash between two communities in the Tilak Vihar area of west Delhi left many people injured on Thursday evening. While police claimed 19 people were injured, five of them cops,DDU Hospital put the number of injured at 31. Five locals were admitted with bullet wounds and one of them is reported critical with a shot to the abdomen. Three of the injured cops have head injuries from stones thrown by the rioters. 

The two communities live close by within the Tilak Lane area. There are conflicting accounts of how the fight started but it soon spun out of control with both sides burning vehicles, damaging property and pelting stones. Sources said the violence lasted from 2pm to 7.30pm and was brought under control with heavy use of force, including 2,000 personnel from 11 police stations and around 50 tear gas shells. Police denied firing upon the rioters. "We did not fire any rounds at all and resorted to use of teargas only. We are probing how these shots were fired,'' said a senior officer at the police headquarters. 

Locals said the violence started as a verbal spat between a biker and a passerby but it soon turned nasty after their supporters started pelting stones at each other. When police intervened, the fight became a full-scale riot in which about a dozen police and private vehicles were set on fire. Another group of witnesses said the fight snowballed from an argument between children flying kites on Independence Day. Police, however, said the fight started when members of one community pulled up three stunt bikers from the other. 

Soon after the fight started, police along with paramilitary forces reached the spot and cordoned it off. Media persons and passersby were stopped 2km away to prevent a flare-up. The clashes peaked around 4.30pm, briefly forcing the cops to take cover from the shower of stones. Police then charged the mob with lathis and started lobbing tear gas shells. Reinforcements from specialized units—AATS, special staff and the reserve police—also arrived. A few rounds were fired in the air and then the rioters began to disperse. After two hours of extensive riot control measures, the situation was brought under control around 7.30pm. 

Till 10.30pm, when TOI visited the spot, both groups were sloganeering against each other, across a human chain of policemen. The road near Tilak Vihar police post, the main scene of action, was covered in stones. Riot police and Vajra water canons have been deployed in the area. 

Sunny Singh, who was admitted to DDU Hospital with gunshots, said: "I was hit by a bullet in the police firing when I was running to save myself. People were pelting stones". Mohar Singh and Raghunath were also admitted with bullet injuries. Other locals at the hospital also alleged that police opened fire. 

Political leaders, including MP Mahabal Mishra, and police officers including special CP (law and order) Deepak Misra and joint CP Vivek Gogia reached the area late in the evening to establish peace. A high-level probe has been ordered. The local police's role will also be investigated. Gogia assured the locals that an investigation will be conducted into the incident, and urged people of both communities to not resort to violence. 

A case under sections of rioting, illegal use of weapons and damaging public property has been registered at Tilak Nagar police station. The damaged vehicles include five bikes, a three-wheeler, a car, and police vehicles, including one used by additional commissioner (west) V Renganathan.

Clashes in Tilak Vihar leave 27 injured

Police resort to firing, use tear gas to bring the situation under control; four people suffer bullet injuries

Twenty-seven people, five of them policemen, were injured and over two dozen vehicles and a police post were damaged in clashes between two groups at Tilak Vihar in West Delhi on Thursday.

While different versions on what triggered the violence were doing the rounds, the dramatic sequence of events unfolded early in the afternoon. Following a violent clash between the two groups, the police resorted to firing and use of tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

Eyewitnesses claimed that at least three persons were injured in police firing but the police denied these claims and said the bullets were fired in the air and not a single shot hit any person.

The clashing groups comprised of residents from two different localities in Tilak Vihar. Both these groups — Sikhs and residents of Harijan Colony — live a few hundred metres apart. The police post which was damaged by the angry mob is located in between the two localities. Some policemen said clashes in the area were frequent but before Thursday they were sporadic in nature and had never snowballed into something so big.

Charan Singh, a resident of A block in Tilak Nagar, said it was around 3 p.m. that two boys from their area had gone to the neighbouring Harijan Colony on a motorcycle where they had an argument with a group of people over rash driving. The argument soon turned ugly and both were assaulted.

“When they returned, they told us about the incident and some of us went to the Harijan Colony where a mob threw stones at us and we responded by pelting stones in the same manner,” said another A block resident.

Tilak Vihar Harijan Colony Residents’ Welfare Association president Satyanarayan Dulgach had a similar take on what triggered the incident. “The problem started when boys from the Sikh community started performing dangerous stunts on their motorcycle on the colony streets. Despite being warned against indulging in this sport on a crowded street, the boys did not pay heed and a heated argument ensued which eventually led to members from both communities getting involved. Later matters went from bad to worse.”

Admitting that members of both communities pelted stones at each other, he said the police had to resort to lathi-charge, use of tear gas and firing to control the crowd.

“The mob has damaged two of my cars, besides setting fire to vehicles of the police and area residents. The police post has also been hit and the members of the Sikh community also pelted stones and beat up on-duty police personnel,” said Mr. Dulgach.

According to the police, when personnel of the Tilak Vihar Police Post tried to bring the situation under control, they were attacked with stones, bricks and glass bottles by members of both sides. From the sign board to documents and furniture, everything lay shattered at the police post, bearing testimony to the scale of violence witnessed there. At least two Police Control Room vans were also damaged and several two-wheelers also bore the brunt of mob fury.

Soon, reinforcements, including additional force and water canons, were called in and the police used tear gas to disperse the agitated crowd. The situation was brought under control around 8 p.m. but an uneasiness remained.

Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital medical superintendent Dr. Savita Babbar said: “Twenty-seven people were brought to the hospital from the Tilak Vihar area. Of them, four had sustained bullet injuries and are admitted at the hospital. One of them is critical after having sustained bullet injuries in the abdomen. He has been operated upon and is under observation. Most of the others have been discharged after first-aid.”

Paramjit Singh Sarna, former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president, who visited Tilak Vihar, denied that the clash had anything to do with rash driving.

“Four members of the Sikh community have been seriously injured, including one child, in the fight between the two communities. The community people have told me that the fight started after children from both the sides started fighting over kites. The parents got involved when one Sikh boy was badly beaten up. Members from both the communities threw stones at each other and destroyed police vehicles,” he said.

“At the moment, the two communities have been cordoned-off and the police are not allowing the members to cross the streets to avoid the situation from further escalating. Tempers are running high and people are annoyed with what they claim to be over-aggressive police action. This is the fourth such incident in the area,” said Mr. Sarna, who is also the president of Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi).

COMMUNAL CLASH, POLICE FIRING IN DELHI, 18 INJURED

NEW DELHI: Twelve people — including three with serious gunshot wounds — and six police personnel were injured in a clash between two communities in west Delhi’s Tilak Vihar on Thursday.

According to the police, seven private vehicles were also set on fire and five police vehicles, including additional commissioner (west) V Renganathan’s official car, were damaged by an angry mob that resorted to stone pelting.

The police reportedly fired six rounds in the air and used over a dozen teargas shells to disperse the mob. The injured were taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where the condition of one person who received a bullet in the stomach and two policemen was said to be serious.

Trouble began around 4pm when four bike-borne youngsters from one community were roughed up by some people from the other community for riding their motorcycle in a rash and negligent manner in the latter’s colony.
