Sikh professor of Columbia University attacked

Prabhjot Singh is a professor at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University

NEW YORK —  A Sikh professor who wrote a New York Times op-ed last year about hate crimes against American Sikhs was attacked by a group of teens over the weekend, media reported citing police.
Prabhjot Singh, an assistant professor at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs, was attacked at around 8 p.m. Saturday while walking along 110th Street near Lennox Avenue in upper Manhattan, NBC 4 New York reported.
Singh, who wears a turban and a beard, said he was confronted by more than a dozen teens on bicycles who shouted slurs before attacking him.
"I heard 'Get Osama' and then 'terrorists', and then the next thing I felt was someone moving past me, ripping at my beard and then hitting me in the chin," Singh told the channel.
Singh said he started running and was punched in the face and on his sides. His attackers continued to kick and punch him after he fell to the ground, he said.
Singh was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital Saturday and had surgery on his jaw, which was fractured, according to NBC 4 New York.
Singh, the channel said, believed he could have died if passers-by hadn't helped get the teens off him.
"There's no doubt in my mind it was a bias-related event," he was quoted as saying.
The attack, he said, made him worry that his one-year-old son, "who will certainly resemble a Sikh man", will face similar hatred as he gets older.
"My fear is that they'll disappear into the neighbourhood," he said of the assailants, adding that he hoped the community mobilises to prevent similar attacks.
Condemning the attack, North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) urged the US government to begin tracking and counting anti-Sikh hate crimes, just as it must continue to vigorously combat bias and discrimination against all Americans, including Muslims.
The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) also called on state political and religious leaders to speak out against bias-motivated crimes after the attack on Prabhjot Singh.

Akal Takht bans Guru Granth Sahib in homes with liquor, tobacco

Akal Takht, the primary seat of Sikh religious authority, has banned the installation of Guru Granth Sahib in houses having liquor bars or where substances like tobacco, other intoxicants and halal meat are consumed.
This decision was taken at a meeting of the Sikh clergy at the Akal Takht secretariat in Amritsar on Tuesday.
Giving details about the decision, Akal Takht Jathedar (high priest) Giani Gurbachan Singh said keeping the Guru Granth Sahib in houses of Sikhs who had made liquor bars in their drawing rooms was tantamount to showing utter disrespect to the holy book, which is considered a living embodiment of Sikh gurus.
Besides liquor bars, the Sikh families using substances that are against the basic tenets of the religion have also been cautioned against keeping the holy book in their homes.
“Sikh families who consume ‘halal’ meat, smoke hookah, charas (hashish) and tobacco also can’t have the holy book in their homes. We also advise Sikhs to abstain from such practices. Else, religious action would be taken against them on receiving any such complaint or violation,” said Gurbachan.
The Takht has also banned placing Guru Granth Sahib or holding its prayers at samadhs or places which worship the dead. The Takht also banned printing of Guru Granth Sahib by anyone else but the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). In another decision, Sikh high priests on Wednesday declared SGPC member from Doda, Navtej Singh Kauni, as ‘Tankhayia’ (religious atonement).

SAD preparing to contest Delhi assembly elections under own banner, symbol

SAD preparing to contest Delhi assembly elections under own banner, symbol

CHANDIGARH: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has begun making preparations for contesting the Delhi assembly elections under its own banner and poll symbol on nearly half-a-dozen seats.
After tasting victory in the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) elections, when it ousted Akali Dal (Delhi) headed by Paramjit Singh Sarna, the party leadership is confident that it can put up a good show in the assembly elections as well.
Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who is also the president of SAD, has conveyed to the BJP leadership that the party is looking at several constituencies which have a sizeable Punjabi population, including Tilaknagar, Rajouri Gardens and Harinagar. This fits in with Sukhbir’s grandiose plan to expand the base of SAD beyond the confines of Punjab. SAD already has an MLA in neighboring Haryana. It has also drawn up plans to contest the polls in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.
It may be mentioned here that SAD had fought the last Delhi assembly elections under the BJP banner and poll symbol, but could not win any seat.

Another Victory for the Turban: Judge Apologizes to Sikh New Religious Attire and Headwear Policy Goes Into Effect in Michigan Courtrooms

Kalamazoo County, Michigan- UNITED SIKHS is humbled to announce another civil rights policy advocacy victory resulting in the modification of court procedures in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, to recognize the Sikh religious practices.
Michigan Victory

This has resulted from an incident involving Mr. Hardeep Singh (pictured), a resident of Battle Creek, Michigan, who was accompanying his friend to the latter’s court hearing in the Kalamazoo County Probate Court on October 16, 2012. Suddenly, while seated in the courtroom the judge requested Mr Singh to remove his “hat”. All attempts to explain that it wasn’t a hat but a Sikh turban, an inseparable part of his Sikh identity were halted by the judge. Another couple’s effort to defend Mr Singh failed too.The judge asked Mr.Singh to either remove his “hat” or leave the courtroom. As any devout Sikh would have done, Mr. Singh chose to leave the courtroom.

UNITED SIKHS legal team filed a Civil Rights Complaint with the Department of Justice. After persistent advocacy, positive results have been achieved.

UNITED SIKHS would like to thank the DOJ Civil Rights Division, especially Attorney Michael Mule’ and the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Western District of Michigan for handling this matter.

Mr.Hardeep Singh stated graciously, “I would like to thank UNITED SIKHS from the bottom of my heart. They stood up for my dignity and for the dignity of all Sikhs. My blessings and good wishes will always be with them.”

UNITED SIKHS Staff Attorney Manmeet Singh said, “The Sikh community has been living in and is an integral part of Kalamazoo County for a long time. They believed that by now, their fellow citizens were already educated about who Sikhs were and the importance of their dastaar (Sikh turban). This incident came as a rude shock and Sikhs were appalled at the treatment meted out to one of their own by a giver of justice. The apology letter, the new nondiscrimination policy related to religious attire and headwear, the new complaint form and training for court staff are all steps in the right direction. The new policy and complaint form will benefit not only Sikhs, but also Jews, Muslims and people of other faiths who wear some sort of head covering or religious attire.”

9/11 attacks: How turbans instigate hate crime in America

Half of the people surveyed think ‘Sikh’ is a sect of Islam: Stanford research project. CREATIVE COMMONS
America changed after the September 11, 2001 attacks, as did the rest of the world. The post-9/11 attacks inculcated an interest in Islam and world religions – but also skewed concepts and principles.
Sikhs, among other minority groups, have been targeted socially and violently since the attacks on America’s soil. The reason for those committing the hate crimes against Sikhs are mostly attributed to the turban – a religious garb called the Keshki, which is one of the five symbols of the Khalsa (brotherhood) Sikhs.
According to a survey conducted by the Stanford Peace Innovation Lab, a research group based at Stanford University, Americans tend to associate turbans with Osama bin Laden more so than with a named Muslim and Sikh alternatives.
The same survey revealed that nearly half of the Americans questioned believed that “Sikh” is a sect of Islam, while 70 per cent of the respondents could not identify a Sikh man in a picture as a Sikh.
This survey was part of findings of the research project “Turban Myths: The opportunity and challenges for reframing a cultural symbol for post-9/11 America”, conducted by the Stanford Peace Innovation Lab on behalf of the Sikh American Legal Defence and Education Fund (SALDEF). The purpose of the research project was to study the American perception of the Sikh community in the country, and to develop preliminary recommendations for an advocacy and engagement programme.
This targeting of Sikhs due to ignorance was highlighted more after the tragic Wisconsin shooting in a Sikh temple. On August 5, 2012, Wade Michael Page gunned down six people and wounded four others at the Oak Creek Sikh temple. He took his life by shooting himself after he was shot by a responding police officer.

Two Indians shot dead at US grocery store

Two Indian-Americans running a grocery store in the US state of Indiana have been shot dead by masked men during a robbery attempt, sending shock waves among the Sikh community in the country.

The victims have been identified as 55-year-old Jagtar Singh Bhatti from Preet Nagar in Jalandhar and 20-year-old Pawan Preet Singh from Munnan village in Hoshiarpur, according to the North American Punjabi Association (NAPA).

Two masked men shot and killed store owner Jagtar Singh, and his employee Pawan Preet at Middlebury Street in the northern Indiana city of Elkhart Thursday, NAPA executive director Satnam Singh Chahal said citing information received from the victims' families in India.
Jagtar Singh was running his grocery shop for the last seven years and was living with Palwinder Singh Bhatti.
According to another store employee Bill Sinclair, he was in the store's kitchen when he heard a noise like the pop of a firecracker.
Two girls standing outside told him that two men in masks ran from the store, and when he went inside, he saw Jagtar Singh and Pawan Preet had been shot.
Condemning the deadly attack, Chahal said due to the growing killings, the Sikh community is living under the shadow of fear and insecurity.

NAPA in a statement urged the US government to leave no stone unturned to take all necessary measures to protect the lives and property of NRIs.

Hemkunt Sahib Yatra likely to resume later this month

Patiala: The yatra of Hemkunt Sahib, a Sikh religious place in Uttarakhand, is likely to resume by later this month if the situation improves at the ground.

"The Shri Hemkunt Sahib Management Trust (SHSMT) and the Uttarakhand government have been contemplating to resume the yatra for a limited period of 10 to 15 days," vice-chairman of the trust Narinderjit Singh Bindra told a news agency over phone today.

Claiming that incessant rains have been delaying restoration work, Bindra said he would accompany Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna to the spot next week to take stock of the situation and take a final call on the yatra.

Private helicopters could be pressed into service for the yatra so that pilgrims could pay their obeisance, he said, adding the temporary bridge over the Alaknanda river at Gobind Ghat had been constructed and the trek route thereon re-levelled for pedestrians.

The yatra was stopped in June after flash floods created havoc in the hilly areas of the state.

Hemkunt Sahib, where Guru Gobind Singh meditated before his incarnation as the 10th Sikh guru, is one of the most revered places in the religion.

Every year, the doors of Hemkunt Sahib open for pilgrims from June 1 to October 5.

The Gurdwara located at an altitude of 4,632.96 metres (15,200.0 ft) remains closed during winter as environmental conditions are not suitable for pilgrimage.

Punjab CM to take up Kutch farmers' issue with Narendra Modi

Gandhinagar, Sept 6: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will raise the issue of Sikh farmers in Kutch with his Gujarat counterpart Narendra Modi during his visit here on September 9. Badal will take part in the Vibrant Gujarat Global Agricultural Summit where he has been invited as one of the premier guests.

Sources in Chandigarh said the two chief ministers will discuss the issue at length. Badal's Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) government in Punjab had an issue with the Gujarat government's pursuing the farmers' case in the Supreme Court and wanted to settle it politically. The agitated farmers were of the opinion that the Gujarat government should not have appealed in the apex court against the high court's verdict given in their favour. They are now looking forward to the Badal-Modi talks.

1984 Anti-Sikh riots:US court summons Congress president Sonia Gandhi

A US federal court has issued summons against Congress party president Sonia Gandhi for shielding Kamal Nath, Sajjan Kumar and other party leaders allegedly involved in inciting attacks on Sikhs in November 1984.

The summons were issued after  a complaint was lodged against Sonia  Gandhi by a Sikh group.

The suit under Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCA) and Torture Victim Protection Act (TVPA) accuses Gandhi of shielding and protecting Kamal Nath, Sajjan Kumar, Jagdish Tytler and other Congress party leaders from being prosecuted for their alleged role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

Almost 29 years after over 3,000 Sikhs were massacred in the Capital in the aftermath of the assassination of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi, justice continues to elude the victims.

Teenage girl arrested over violent attack on 80-year-old

A TEENAGE girl has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an 80-year-old man – leaving him with a bloodied nose and black eye – in a nasty Coventry city centre attack.
The 19-year-old was arrested at around 6.30pm today (August 16) after police traced her to an address in Gloucester.
She will be taken to a West Midlands Police station where she will be questioned about the attack in Trinity Street, Coventry, on Saturday evening (August 10) when the elderly victim was punched in the face and shoved to the ground.
A video of the attack – recorded by a passer-by on their mobile phone – had been circulated widely on social media throughout today and met with a wave of revulsion from viewers.
Coventry Police Chief Superintendent Andy Nicholson, said: “This was a despicable, violent attack on an elderly man in broad daylight. The victim is an 80-year-old man – he was left with a bloodied nose and a black eye.
“A video showing the assault spread rapidly on social media and quite rightly the offender’s actions are being condemned by everyone who’s viewed it.”
The attack, which appears unprovoked, happened at around 8.30pm on Saturday evening near Sainsbury’s in Coventry’s Trinity Street.
Police are still keen to hear from people who witnessed the incident and moments leading up to the attack – and have urged anyone who shared the video or still images of the assault to remove them from social media accounts as they could hinder the enquiry.
Anyone with information should contact West Midlands Police on the 101 number or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Communities clash, 31 injured

NEW DELHI: A clash between two communities in the Tilak Vihar area of west Delhi left many people injured on Thursday evening. While police claimed 19 people were injured, five of them cops,DDU Hospital put the number of injured at 31. Five locals were admitted with bullet wounds and one of them is reported critical with a shot to the abdomen. Three of the injured cops have head injuries from stones thrown by the rioters.

The two communities live close by within the Tilak Lane area. There are conflicting accounts of how the fight started but it soon spun out of control with both sides burning vehicles, damaging property and pelting stones. Sources said the violence lasted from 2pm to 7.30pm and was brought under control with heavy use of force, including 2,000 personnel from 11 police stations and around 50 tear gas shells. Police denied firing upon the rioters. "We did not fire any rounds at all and resorted to use of teargas only. We are probing how these shots were fired,'' said a senior officer at the police headquarters.

Locals said the violence started as a verbal spat between a biker and a passerby but it soon turned nasty after their supporters started pelting stones at each other. When police intervened, the fight became a full-scale riot in which about a dozen police and private vehicles were set on fire. Another group of witnesses said the fight snowballed from an argument between children flying kites on Independence Day. Police, however, said the fight started when members of one community pulled up three stunt bikers from the other.

Soon after the fight started, police along with paramilitary forces reached the spot and cordoned it off. Media persons and passersby were stopped 2km away to prevent a flare-up. The clashes peaked around 4.30pm, briefly forcing the cops to take cover from the shower of stones. Police then charged the mob with lathis and started lobbing tear gas shells. Reinforcements from specialized units—AATS, special staff and the reserve police—also arrived. A few rounds were fired in the air and then the rioters began to disperse. After two hours of extensive riot control measures, the situation was brought under control around 7.30pm.

Till 10.30pm, when TOI visited the spot, both groups were sloganeering against each other, across a human chain of policemen. The road near Tilak Vihar police post, the main scene of action, was covered in stones. Riot police and Vajra water canons have been deployed in the area.

Sunny Singh, who was admitted to DDU Hospital with gunshots, said: "I was hit by a bullet in the police firing when I was running to save myself. People were pelting stones". Mohar Singh and Raghunath were also admitted with bullet injuries. Other locals at the hospital also alleged that police opened fire.

Political leaders, including MP Mahabal Mishra, and police officers including special CP (law and order) Deepak Misra and joint CP Vivek Gogia reached the area late in the evening to establish peace. A high-level probe has been ordered. The local police's role will also be investigated. Gogia assured the locals that an investigation will be conducted into the incident, and urged people of both communities to not resort to violence.

A case under sections of rioting, illegal use of weapons and damaging public property has been registered at Tilak Nagar police station. The damaged vehicles include five bikes, a three-wheeler, a car, and police vehicles, including one used by additional commissioner (west) V Renganathan.

Police resort to firing, use tear gas to bring the situation under control; four people suffer bullet injuries

Twenty-seven people, five of them policemen, were injured and over two dozen vehicles and a police post were damaged in clashes between two groups at Tilak Vihar in West Delhi on Thursday.
While different versions on what triggered the violence were doing the rounds, the dramatic sequence of events unfolded early in the afternoon. Following a violent clash between the two groups, the police resorted to firing and use of tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
Eyewitnesses claimed that at least three persons were injured in police firing but the police denied these claims and said the bullets were fired in the air and not a single shot hit any person.
The clashing groups comprised of residents from two different localities in Tilak Vihar. Both these groups — Sikhs and residents of Harijan Colony — live a few hundred metres apart. The police post which was damaged by the angry mob is located in between the two localities. Some policemen said clashes in the area were frequent but before Thursday they were sporadic in nature and had never snowballed into something so big.
Charan Singh, a resident of A block in Tilak Nagar, said it was around 3 p.m. that two boys from their area had gone to the neighbouring Harijan Colony on a motorcycle where they had an argument with a group of people over rash driving. The argument soon turned ugly and both were assaulted.
“When they returned, they told us about the incident and some of us went to the Harijan Colony where a mob threw stones at us and we responded by pelting stones in the same manner,” said another A block resident.
Tilak Vihar Harijan Colony Residents’ Welfare Association president Satyanarayan Dulgach had a similar take on what triggered the incident. “The problem started when boys from the Sikh community started performing dangerous stunts on their motorcycle on the colony streets. Despite being warned against indulging in this sport on a crowded street, the boys did not pay heed and a heated argument ensued which eventually led to members from both communities getting involved. Later matters went from bad to worse.”
Admitting that members of both communities pelted stones at each other, he said the police had to resort to lathi-charge, use of tear gas and firing to control the crowd.
“The mob has damaged two of my cars, besides setting fire to vehicles of the police and area residents. The police post has also been hit and the members of the Sikh community also pelted stones and beat up on-duty police personnel,” said Mr. Dulgach.
According to the police, when personnel of the Tilak Vihar Police Post tried to bring the situation under control, they were attacked with stones, bricks and glass bottles by members of both sides. From the sign board to documents and furniture, everything lay shattered at the police post, bearing testimony to the scale of violence witnessed there. At least two Police Control Room vans were also damaged and several two-wheelers also bore the brunt of mob fury.
Soon, reinforcements, including additional force and water canons, were called in and the police used tear gas to disperse the agitated crowd. The situation was brought under control around 8 p.m. but an uneasiness remained.
Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital medical superintendent Dr. Savita Babbar said: “Twenty-seven people were brought to the hospital from the Tilak Vihar area. Of them, four had sustained bullet injuries and are admitted at the hospital. One of them is critical after having sustained bullet injuries in the abdomen. He has been operated upon and is under observation. Most of the others have been discharged after first-aid.”
Paramjit Singh Sarna, former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee president, who visited Tilak Vihar, denied that the clash had anything to do with rash driving.
“Four members of the Sikh community have been seriously injured, including one child, in the fight between the two communities. The community people have told me that the fight started after children from both the sides started fighting over kites. The parents got involved when one Sikh boy was badly beaten up. Members from both the communities threw stones at each other and destroyed police vehicles,” he said.
“At the moment, the two communities have been cordoned-off and the police are not allowing the members to cross the streets to avoid the situation from further escalating. Tempers are running high and people are annoyed with what they claim to be over-aggressive police action. This is the fourth such incident in the area,” said Mr. Sarna, who is also the president of Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi).

COMMUNAL CLASH, POLICE FIRING IN DELHI, 18 INJURED

NEW DELHI: Twelve people — including three with serious gunshot wounds — and six police personnel were injured in a clash between two communities in west Delhi’s Tilak Vihar on Thursday.

According to the police, seven private vehicles were also set on fire and five police vehicles, including additional commissioner (west) V Renganathan’s official car, were damaged by an angry mob that resorted to stone pelting.

The police reportedly fired six rounds in the air and used over a dozen teargas shells to disperse the mob. The injured were taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where the condition of one person who received a bullet in the stomach and two policemen was said to be serious.

Trouble began around 4pm when four bike-borne youngsters from one community were roughed up by some people from the other community for riding their motorcycle in a rash and negligent manner in the latter’s colony.

'Sikhs India's biggest spenders, Muslims the smallest'

Sikh

Sikh households are the country's biggest spenders on average, and Muslim households on average the smallest, shows government data compiled for the period July 2009 to June 2010.

Sikh households spent on average about 1.7 times the expenditure by Muslim households, according to the list of major religious groups arranged by average monthly per capita household consumer expenditure (MPCE).

Household expenditure serves as a proxy for income, and is usually taken to reflect standards of living.

According to data from the National Sample Survey Office's (NSSO's) eighth quinquennial survey on employment and Sikhs India's biggest spenders, Muslims the smallest unemployment during the 12 months to June 2010, at the all-India level, the average MPCE of Sikh households was Rs 1,659, while that of Muslim households was only Rs 980.

Spending by Christian households was marginally lower than by Sikh households. Spending by Hindu households was about 27 per cent less than that by Christian households.

The 'Others' category, which includes Jain and Zoroastrian households, was third from the top, recording spending that was marginally lower than that by Christian households but sharply higher than Hindu and Muslim households.

The survey, conducted in the 66th round of the national sample survey, was spread over 7,402 villages and 5,252 urban blocks covering 1,00,957 households and 4.59 lakh persons. Consumption expenditure data was collected in a separate abbreviated worksheet which was integrated with the employment and unemployment schedule.

The data shows that Muslims continue to be the most backward community in economic terms in India.
