Judge recuses himself in case of missing Sajjan chargesheet

NEW DELHI: The fate of the missing chargesheet filed in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case and which had named former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar as an accused remains undecided. The sessions court judge who was to deliver the order on whether direction could be issued to the police to file the chargesheet before a competent court recused himself on Friday from hearing the case citing "personal reasons".

Additional sessions Judge V K Goyal was to pronounce the order on an application by the prosecution seeking direction on a chargesheet prepared by police against Sajjan Kumar but never submitted before a judicial officer.

The judge, however, decided to send the file to the district judge for transferring to another court. "Due to certain personal reasons I do not want to adjudicate on this matter. Let the file be placed before learned district judge VIII with a request to transfer the same to some other court of competent jurisdiction," ASJ Goyal said, directing the parties concerned to appear before the district judge on May 24.

3 accused in anti-Sikh riots case acquitted

The Delhi High Court on Friday acquitted three accused in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case at Shastri Nagar in North Delhi, saying there were discrepancies galore in the evidence of prosecution witnesses.

The riots broke out in the wake of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984.

A Division Bench of Justices A.K. Sikri and Justice Ajit Bharihoke acquitted Bhagat Singh, Mangal Sain and Brij Mohan Verma on their separate appeals against their conviction by the lower court.

The Sarai Rohilla police had lodged a case against the accused on a direction by a committee after consideration of the affidavits filed by the riot victims.

The police had booked them under Sections 395 (dacoity) 435 (mischief by fire or explosive) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.

Sikh history book back to haunt SGPC

SAD (Delhi) demands action against panel that cleared the book

A controversial history book, Sikh Itihaas (Hindi edition), published by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) a few years ago is back to haunt the religious body. A delegation of Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) today met Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, seeking a ban on the book and action against the authors and SGPC functionaries responsible for printing and distributing it. The book allegedly uses inappropriate adjectives for various Sikh gurus.

The delegation led by SAD (Delhi)’s Punjab head Jaswinder Singh Baliawal and its youth wing Chief Gurmit Singh submitted a memorandum to the jathedar. “We had taken up the matter earlier as well, and the printing of the book had been stopped. But there is still no action against the panel that cleared the derogatory and blasphemous remarks,” said Baliawal.

SGPC chief’s appeal to Sikhs on census

Anandpur Sahib, Punjab: SGPC president said today that all Sikhs should mention themselves as just Sikhs in the ongoing census.

SGPC appealed that no Sikh should mention his or her sub-caste in the census. It is an appeal to all Sikhs to mention their mother tongue as Punjabi. The census will then shed light on the exact details of numbers of Sikhs in the country.

Condemning the suspension of the Anandpur Sahib – Amritsar rail project, he said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should intervene into the issue. “Being a Sikh, the PM should take up the matter on priority basis. After all, it’s the issue of connectivity between two Takhts,” the SGPC chief added.

Commenting on the allegations of the saffronisation of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur’s tercentenary celebrations, he said the event was meant at bringing people of all walks of life together.
