Excerpts of my lecture on :"Successful Conflict Resolution:The Sikhs in India in the 1980s":
ReplyDeleteBhindanwala was a simple religious/radical Sikh teacher. His entry in the centre stage of Sikh Politics was actually the conspiracy between the then PM. Indira Gandhi & Zail Singh to use him as a tool to undermine the power of Akali Dal & to gain power in Punjab legislature for Congress party.
There is no doubt that the whole Sikh community was against the militancy but at the same time there is no justification also for this blunder mistake(Operation Blue Star) committed by Govt..It was just a political tool to win the election that were to be held in few months after Operation Blue star.Again 1984 riots was a shame in Indian History. We the Sikhs (We the people of India in the context of preamble of Indian Constitution) felt like a refugee in our own homeland just because we were a Sikh. The whole administration was paralysed. On top of it; at a massive rally ,Rajiv Gandhi commented on the anti Sikh riots"When a big tree falls ,the earth shakes"...........It is pitty that it all happened when we had a Sikh President.......A growing number of non-Sikhs have also come to the conclusion that grave injustice has been done to the Sikhs..... I strongly believe that Sikh Community's collective psyche left so badly scarred that it has/will not healed even after a generation.
