RCMP Declines Bearded Sikh Officers Being Put on Desk Duty During The Pandemic

The Liberal government has raised concerns with the RCMP about the national force declining to accommodate bearded Sikh officers during the pandemic, but the force said it is subject to a health and safety regulation for respirator fittings that “specifically requires a clean shave.”

The World Sikh Organization (WSO), which seeks to promote and protect the interests of Canadian Sikhs, said Sikh officers have been removed from front-line policing duties and given desk roles for nearly six months because the RCMP says its personal protective equipment or PPE does not seal with facial hair.

“The RCMP are the only police force in Canada that refuse to accommodate bearded Sikh officers,” said WSO president Tejinder Singh Sidhu.

There has been no attempt to accommodate Sikh officers with alternative PPE that would work with their facial hair, the organization added.

The concerns were raised as the RCMP and police forces across Canada face increased calls to confront systemic racism, including after a number of police shootings.

All officers must be given equal opportunity to serve their community while practising their faith, she added. “They must not experience discrimination based on religion.” said press secretary Mary-Liz Power.

Guru Nanak Dev ji 's Death Anniversary at Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib,Pakistan

                           Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara, Pakistan

Hundreds of Pakistani Sikhs visited the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, a huge temple in Kartarpur marking the grave of Sikhism's founder Guru Nanak, to commemorate the 481st anniversary of his death.

This year would have been the first time Indian Sikhs could have crossed visa-free into Pakistan to mark the anniversary at the site, located just 4km inside the country, after a special crossing was opened in November 2019.

Coronavirus fears meant a historic travel corridor created last year to let Indian Sikhs visit a holy shrine in north-east Pakistan remained closed on Tuesday (Sept 22) on one of the faith's most sacred days.

Vaneet Singh :A Sikh Taxi Driver Was Attacked in His Car As He Drove Four Passengers Home From a Casino

Vaneet Singh said the men slapped and shoved him as he drove along the A33 after collecting them from the Grosvenor Casino in Reading,UK in the early hours of Sunday.

The 41-year-old said one of the men tried to remove his turban and asked him: "Are you Taliban?"

Police investigating the incident said no arrests have been made.

Mr Singh, who lives in Tilehurst,UK with his wife and three young children, said he had started working as a taxi driver because the coronavirus pandemic had stalled his job teaching music to children in Slough.

He said: "It was horrible, really frightening, I will never work the nightshift again. I'm still very scared."

Mr Singh said the person in the middle of the back of the car pulled his turban as he was driving and slapped him on the head, while others kicked and punched the back of his driver's seat.

He said the passengers were well behaved at the start of the journey but "totally changed" as it went on.

"It's very bad experience. It's my religion so I respect my turban," he said.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said the force was investigating a report of assault and appealed for witnesses.
